Weird Al concert in Adelaide

On Friday 16th March Weird Al Yankovic made a stop in Adelaide for his tour of Australia. It was to promote his Straight Out of Lynwood album from late last year and was held at the Thebarton Theatre.

I of course attended this concert and I arrived quite early. At the front some lady held a petition to induct Weird Al into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, of which I signed, and I didn't get into the building until 7 PM. The show then started just after 8 with his intro music and a video screen containing (mostly weird and gross) clips from TV shows and movies such as that milkshake dude from Aqua Teen Hunger Force (which I don't watch because I'm too preoccupied) and Jack Nicholson from the Shining before going to some old intros from late night tv presenters such as Letterman, Leno and that guy from the Daily Show) before Al and his band went on stage.

He started off with Polkarama, which is a polka version of some recent songs with the original film clips played in the background, before playing Canadian Idiot and Close But No Cigar before speaking to the audience. He then made a mention of the Adelaide suburb of Glenelg and therefore played a song called 'Bob', which is made entirely of palindromes and on the screen came the clip he did for that song. If you've seen the clip for 'Suburban Homesick Blues' then you'll know.

During costume changes a series of AL TV clips were played, including musician interviews and old sketches from his short-lived TV show and his movie with a bit of tv show references to him and his other tv and film appearances thrown in.

The next couple of songs were All About the Pentiums and Wanna B UR Lovr, that latter of which he went up into the crowd while performing.

This was followed by 'You're Pitiful', and he parodied the James Blunt clip on stage by taking off his shirts. He started with a jumper and later a gold shirt followed by an I'm with stupid shirt with the arrow pointing downwards, an I love pictograph shirt and finally a yellow shirt with Spongebob's face on it. He then took off his jeans and revealed love-heart boxer shorts, a tutu and fishnet stockings.

He then did a few snippets of other songs in a medley. The song list is below:

- Couch Potato
- Do I Creep You Out?
- I fell in Love with the Skipper
- Broadcast News (with new lyrics regarding the recent news about Britney Spears)
- Bedrock Anthem
- Gump
- Pretty Fly for a Rabbi
- Ode to a Superhero
- A Complicated Song (with Alabama changed to Tasmania)
- Trapped in the Drive-Thru
- Eat it.

This was followed up with a couple of Star Wars-related tunes. The first of which was The Saga Begins, and the second was Yoda. In the live version Weird Al chicks in his piano accordion into the song and and the crowd also got to sing the last part of the song until a pause in that segment when Al and his backup splurted some nonsense until they went back into the song. This was probably, for me, the highlight of the night.

Afterwards he played Smells Like Nirvana, a Weird Al classic, and he even had the cheerleaders up on stage for the song.

He then got rapping with Amish Paradise and White and Nerdy. On the latter he went on stage with a Segway. Between these two songs there was a video of Al interviewing K-Fed and owning him in the process. K-Fed even admitted to being such a sucky rapper.

The next song was Fat, complete with screen intro. It really did feel like he was fat too, when he jumped the seats vibrated. He then when to thank the band before going off, but because of a middle-aged man yelling ALBUQUERQUE, we were all waiting for the encore.

So were about to get our encore when Weird Al sang these words.

"We've all got cellphones so come on, let's get real"

Most of the crowd waved their mobile phones before going to Albuquerque. It's an epic song that goes for 11 minutes or so and was perfect for the encore.

After 2 and a quarter hours the show had ended, but it was well worth it. Weird Al is two things, comic musician and showman, both of which would value equally for him.

Maybe because the person is his/her dance teacher and maybe the dance teacher told him/her?
