What do you use as your moral compass?

A large number of threads deal with moral and ethical issues.  In this thread discuss what your moral compass is (if you have one) and then explain why you use that moral compass.  If you're a hard determinist then explain why you're one.

moral compass?

sorry, don't have one... used to when i was a scout, but the damn thing broke... now it just points south... oh wait, i am looking at the wrong end... anyway, no moral compass for me, as a godless atheist liberal buddhist i sacrifice virgins every friday to my deities of choise, the invisible pink unicorn and the flying spaghetti monster

on a more serious note, everybody has a moral compass, its just that some people are more flexible than others ...we all have two instincts that often conflict "help self" and "help species" ...most of us try to find the balance between the two ...tilt towards self and you are a selfish bastard, tilt towards species and you are a victim ...i just try to keep religion away from this kind of decision making, its the easy way out and i am not that slothful

personally, i use my moral compass when i feel its the time for change.

when exams are looming, I feel its time to worship the god of knowledge. when a party is up, I make offerings to the love goddess and the god of wine. I frequently pray to the goddess of luck, as well as the gods and goddesses of arts. on a quiet night alone, i pray to the goddess of fetishs and god of perverts. along with the usual gods and goddesses of thunder, wind (i like him a lot!), water, earth, etc.

the many way of praying and worship, but they always involve doing the subject.

generally, my moral compass is enjoy life, help others to do so, for death may bring nothing but darkness.

First off this was not a personal attack! Sarcasm is allowed and as far as my thread being locked I was defending the personal attack that you made to me, this would be why you received the -qp.

And I have made it clear how I feel about gays, that remark was sarcasm too, seems you have a problem telling the difference.

My moral compass is either Buffy the Vampire Slayer or "If your reputation means so much to you, live on and reclaim it.  Life is too important to throw away.  Live long enough, and you'll learn that."

I'm not sure I understand completely the term Moral Compass, but when it comes to deciding what to do, I normally look at two different things: What feels right, and what would I want others to do, had the roles been changed. Doing to others like I want them to do to me - and not doing to others what I don't want them to do to me - is my main guideline.

My Moral Compass

I think people should try and first recognize that a moral compass can be any candidate that has a great affect on the choices you make for yourself. It doesn't always mean that you will choose some historic hero and simply try to emulate or follow in his/her footsteps. It might also be a figure like Hitler who will always remind us of the cost if humanity fails itself.

My moral compass is two people: My Mother and my Father. My mother is a very sad story which I am always trying to consciously avoid doing things the way she did. My father is also a sad story but one which still carries great promise. My father has many good qualities that I am always trying to use as base foundational algorythmic calculations in determining the best course of action.

My Dad has humility beyond belief and has always been good to people of impoverished lives. But he is a man whose life has been diseased by drug addiction and outright rejection of authority figures. My Mom completely lost her sense of good judgment by attacking the father that was never there for her. Almost her entire life has been spent in exile and direct rebellion of the only parent she has ever known. As such...you might imagine....her opinion of humanity is deeply flawed, paranoid, and untrusting.

I'm always asking myself how to not behave like my mother and how to be more like my father. I don't have a drug addiction but the danger always looms for me. I know it's in my blood....much like a vulcan from star trek and their innate emotional affinity for violence. It will always be a part of me and so I must never let go of controlling it. And I gave in to authority during my time as a soldier...something that my father failed miserably.

Some people stop what they are doing if people are laughing at them.  My response is "If I stopped doing what I was doing just because people are lauging at me I'd have stood stock still all my life!"

Honey...let me just say right now...that there ISN'T a box big enough to hold her.
Her or her god squad.

Oh yeah, we should ask her what HER moral compass is next time we are forced to sit with her.

It's not always easy to trust what feels right, nor think what is logically best to do. I'm more of a feeler but not blindly, many situations and people try to manipulate our perceptions. I do not think what someone else would act, even when I ask for advice I have a good idea of what I'm supposed to do. While I admire some people for the way they handle some things I know that this is not always my way.
I just try to measure the consequences and if the choice can end up badly for someone and if I care about it. I usually do.
