Thank you for the warm welcome. I don't think you have bad manners at all!

It's also nice to get some support for the case of mysticism not being worthless.

I think you misunderstood him... mysticism is junk.

These six skills are great for every hero:

Wisdom
Offense
Air Magic
Earth Magic
Logistics
Tactics

Skills for diffrent heroes:

Archery: Don't give this to Inferno or Fortress heroes!
Necromancy: One slot for Necros or perhaps even Dungeon heroes.
Fire Magic: Good for Necro but best for Inferno.
Water Magic: Castle heroes can take this skill.
Leadeship: Knights starting skill.

It's good to play whit skill specialist sometimes:

Diplomacy: Ryland (Rampart)
Sorcery: Solmyr (Tower)
Armourer: Tazar (Fortress)

If you really have one extra slot then you probably could consider this skills:

Resistance: Very nice againts magic heroes.
Pathfinding: In very big maps this can be exellent.
Luck: Nothing special about this but it's better than some skills.
Navigation: If you are playing in Water World then it might ok to take this skill but i personally hate this skill.

Other skills in the game are just horrible.

Mysticism isn't junk, it's a nice skill to have.  The only problem is that there are only 8 slots and more than 15 skills I'd rather put in those slots before mysticism.  But that doesn't make it junk....I'm sure there have been hundreds of times when I really wanted just a couple more spell points.

I guess I'm supposed to make a list (but I'm having serious deja vu doing it)

most wanted:

logistics
earth
logistics
earth
logistics
earth
logistics
earth

next most wanted:

offense
armorer
air (maybe water or fire depending on "things")
tactics

next most:

wisdom

next most:

archery (higher with tower, lower with fortress, necro, inferno)
artillery
resistance

next most:

intelligence
leadership
ballistics
hmmm, don't like those 3 being together!

special purpose:

diplo
navigation
pathfinding (must have on some maps)

Did I forget anything?  Oh yea, there's that one map where you must have eagle eye. Dose anyone remember that map?

There are 29 skills in the game and Mysticism is one of the worst skills in the game. Even in WoG where you can have 2 extra slots Mysticism isin't worth it.

EDIT: If you play whit Alchemists some of the heroes have Mysticism as starting skill. It may have some use but when all slots are full you start wonder why Mysticism!?

You're missing my point.  Mysticism is a nice skill to have, but I'd never take it unless I was forced to.  I think I'd rank it somehwere around 16-20 depending on the map.

My top 8

Wisdom
Earth
Air
Intelligence

Armorer
Offence
Sorcery
Diplomacy

Explanations:

I admit sorcery isn't that great, but I have an obsession with doing the most possible damage with magic. I guess that is why I play as Malekith=)

Slightly off topic:

I think Eagle Eye, Learning, and First Aid have the best logos/icons, but they are some of the worst skills as we all know.

It obviously depends on whether I'm playing Might or Magic, but usually I prefer the latter (Solmyr is my god heh, or Adrienne when I keep trying the Playing With Fire campaign).

This usually means Sorcery, Wisdom, Air Magic (in the case of Solmyr; different when playing another town), Intelligence, and then four other skills. Most likely one of those is another school of magic, one of them is logistics, and the other two are pretty much random. I usually like Ballistics somewhere. Knocking down arrow towers is really helpful. Luck is always useful as well as is Leadership. Oh, and obviously one of them is Necromancy when I'm playing 'Polis.

If I play a might hero, Offense, Armorer etc.

I prefer magic heroes by far though. I don't know why that is. I guess I just have an affinity for Tower.

I'm a magic hero user, so Wisdom and Intelligence are a must. Logistics should be in everybody's itinerary. Having all four schools of magic is sometimes useful, with Earth being most important, Air secon, and Fire and Water being close to one another. I give Fire the edge because of Berserk, Armageddon, and Blind's no retaliation on Expert. Which leaves one spot. That's usually my "bad roll" slot. Though I'm finding that with Diplomacy on your main hero, it's a great way to turn one army into two or even more.

Well, it's going to be like this:

A MUST HAVE:
1. wisdom
2. earth magic

Recommended:
1. water magic
2. logistics
3. fire magic
4. air magic
5. offense
6. intelligence
(in this order)

This exploits the 8 skill limit. But there are some specific conditions, under which the reccomended list is wider:
1. you play tower - archery is recommended
2. you are playing necro and have the Cloak quickly - see above
3. map is 'highly islandish' one - navigation is recommended
4. map is 'highly-rough-terrained', with little roads - pathfinding is recommended
5. your hero specializes in the skill - the skill is recommended(only mentioned):
  - sorcery
  - armorer
  - archery
  - resistance

I do not consider leadership(mixing towns) a bad choice, as well as archery(but on stronghold/castle/dungeon only, tower mentioned above).
Thus, when playing a mighty hero without access to all magics, the eighth skill is either leadership or one of other mentioned above. Tactics may be viable as well, but I prefer not to take it.

Of course, while playing necro, necromancy is essential .

Of course this all was about HoMM 3 SoD.

Everybody who leaves out tactics and armorer in his 8 prefered skills, but puts in ALL 4 magic schools should come to gamespy and play some games with other human players.
You will change your favorite skills after....hmm...let's say 5 games. I bet..
