@ Dark Shadow.  Between the ages of 10 and 14 I was a very religious Christian.  I can say for a fact, being raised up with it, that Christianity does not endorse violence more then being a scientist does.  Sure some people have used certain sayings from the bible to get people to believe it does, but then again they have gotten people to believe they can buy the brooklyn bridge also.  So I guess the Brooklyn Bridge is evil...

Charismatic people can use anything (including science) to trick certain people into doing or believing anything they want.  While this is unfortunate, it does not make the actual source bad.  Just how it is used bad.

I mean I could easily claim that the theory of evolution teaches us that we should just kill whoever we want and take whatever we want.  After all there will be no consequences after we die, so who cares.  Right?  Now I am not a charismatic person, and most people here are not so gullible (and possibly uneducated) to believe that, but if those things were true who knows what damage I could do?

Certain people are always going to take advantage of other people, and the only way to combat that is education.  Let them form their own opinon with ALL the facts (not just cherry picked facts).

Religion is about inner peace and knowing there is something out there greater then us.  Some people call this god, some allah, some the flying speghetti monster.  When we realize just how much we have yet to understand and know, we reach beyond ourselves and try to better ourselves.  People don't realize exactly how much humans don't understand, and they take a lot for granted.  That is why religion is important, so we don't become complacent and actually think we have even a fraction of the answers.  We NEED to know there is much yet to learn.

Right now we are in the equivilent of the teen years in the cosmic sense.  We think we know everything, and nobody can tell us we are wrong.  You don't have to worship anything, you don't even have to acknowledge there is something else is out there.  All that religion really requires is that you realize you DON'T know everything.  So that you are still open to learning.

of course it sounds ridicolous. and it will continue sounding ridicolous until something happens that causes people to attack others because of it.

I agree with Mytical. Violence is not religion's actual purpose, that's the human version of it. You see, when humans want to get something, they will most probably resort to force, because that's the only thing they can think of.

I don't really agree with fights in religions -- that's what the humans simply find the best 'choice' to get the job done. This is regardless of religion -- it is, in fact, for any goal. And that includes, again, any goal -- be it 'beneficial' or not. Some goals demand sacrifices; it's wrong for you to judge other people's worth and sacrifice (not in the literal sense) them if you feel that's better in the long term. Who are you to judge that? What if you were there in their position? I guess the best thing is to let them judge for themselves. Like you do for yourself and them.

Sorry, I meant the "goal" for a particular task. If, for example, in a religion the goal is to steal gold, you go and steal it with violence. The human reading the book will then say the religion is based on violence, which is not, it is based on stealing gold.

Of course it was a stupid example with stealing gold but you get the idea.

J/k

Seriously, though, I know what you're saying.  But let's assume you are right, and it is humans who are hijacking, say, Islam, and doing violence to accomplish what they think is the puropse of Islam, and thus religion is not to blame.  So basically you have all these people killing each other because it's what they think God wants them to do, even though he doesn't.  Don't you think God might come down and say to all these people: "Whoa, whoa, whoa.  WTF is going on here?  Killing each other is NOT what I meant!!" Why doesn't he do that?  Why let all these millions of people misuse his "tool" (i.e. religion) to accomplish exactly the opposite of what he supposedly wants his "tool" to accomplish?  It doesn't make any sense... unless of course God doesn't exist.  Then it makes perfect sense.

Yes it was about the 'means' (i.e how you do it) of doing a specific thing that is corrupted. Also I do believe God (or Allah) was explicit in the Bible (Koran), it got twisted up, etc. There were also messiahs. The idea is, people can twist and ignore everything. God does not come and say "WTF?!?" as much as he doesn't kill the evil instantly. He wants us to learn and be free, to make our choices. We can't choose if we are forced to a certain path (let's say he made us robots and there wouldn't be any evil, but then we wouldn't be free, we would be slaves).

The means of doing something is the 'human' version of religion. (for that matter, maybe even the Bible as it has been twisted along the centuries)

Says obviously the most intelligent HC-Member ! How could we be so stupid ? All over here ! Faith has found the solution of the great problem !

And how would you call New York and Madrid ? Regrettable accidents who just happen to be done by muslims ?
FOOL !
They were cowardly acts of religious fanatism (this time by muslims) versus the Western Christian-Jewish Culture ! It's an act of terrorism, to kill as many innocent infidels as possible !
The perpetrators of the Madrid terrorist attacks didn't even die in the blast of their bombs, they just fled and left hundreds of innocent people to die!

Excuse me for my anger, but really, watch out, who you're calling terrorists pal, it makes me very angry to hear a fanatic tell other fanatics not to be fanatic, like him...

No I am not, but he (faith) is saying muslims aren't terrorists (and wre never as well) and I disagree with that statement because some (remark the stress on this word) muslims are terrorists, there's no point denying that. He's clearly someone who supports the terrorist attack on London, New York and Madrid, and yet he has the cheeck to call others (in this case Jews) terrorists ? It's the man's hypocricy and narrow-mminded thoughts that piss me off (i just hate hypocrites).
