It would probably be best to go through the Modder's Workshop Wiki.

So all I need is WinRAR and Audacity to edit .xdb files?

All the files I need to open .xdb files require me to register them and pay for them, I don't wanna have to pay for anything till I know how (I'm 15). Also I don't want to have my parents pay for the tools either so I guess I'll have to have someone else do it for me...
So can someone please add the ability to restore health and resurrect my troops to vampires and Vampire Lords?

Well. I can understand your reasons. Welcome ot the forum btw. I'm not a modder, so I can't give you any specifics and that's why I pointed you to the Wikia. I know I've seen different processes described there; like adding "fly" to all your creatures I think many modders have managed to stay away from spending lots of money. In an example "Gimp" is free and has been used alot with creature-models.

Again I'm no modder but I know there are still a few around so maybe one will give you a hand. As far as I know I think that WinRAR and "Notepad" were a heavily used combo. I use 7Zip and notepad when working with files.

.xdbs are actually just text files, and can be opened and edited liberally in Notepad. WinRAR is most commonly used for opening the .pak files. The files in data.pak\GameMechanics\Creature\Creatures\ are the place to be for tinkering with creature stats and abilities. Always back up your .paks before any editing.

I'm not going to have to pay for or register Notepad ++ if I download it am I?

It's open-source.
Seriously, you talk like a freak. No one is going to use you, chill out. There are many people in the world who offer good stuff for free.

I'm just being careful, my computer has already been infected with a virus when I downloaded and opened a file from another HOMM mods page from another site. My dad had to disinfect the computer.

For easier script editing, I would add to the list (if it hasn't been added already) Notepad ++.

As you see by reading the title, this thread is created for software, used by modder for creating different modification in - textures, scripts... etc. The thread aim to be software list, where modds give links (screens, descriptions...) of the programs they like and use in practice.

By the way, is there any tools which can help me to know the file structure or contents of /bin/Effects/uid files?
I am write a new mod tool which can directly handle pak files and generate new mod pak files on the fly, but missing the file structure or spec for effects bin file

Hi minun37059,
I dont know what is the meaning of the BIN/effects folder but I may suggest to contact the owner of this youtube channel. He seem very advanced in texture and animataion editing so hopefully he can provide what you are looking for.
Cant wait to see fully working version of the tool you make!

Thanks for your suggestions, however Youtube is blocked in China, hahaha! So i need to find some tools to get the youtube first.
I've open source the mod tool which is under heavy developping in my github. maybe it will be useful for new mods creation.
