Yea many times I went to work with only 2 hrs of sleep or none at all.
Painful lol.

I heard it's really bad for you too.
If i really have to I will just take 2 lids of Nyquil & knock my butt out

It hasn't never been that bad for me, only like 7 hours of sleep and then I go to school tired.I haven't taken any pills.

But it's annoying to be in bed for over 2 hours before falling asleep.

Yea for reals.
For the life of me I dont know how people can fall asleep in 5 minutes.

Unless i am like light headed exhausted, it takes me about that long.
Never know when you fall asleep.

Very wierd, but hey at least you dont waste time in life

I used to be able to sleep well, but not anymore.

I have been sleeping really bad lately, maybe getting 4 hours of sleep in only one day, or in 1 and half days....which is not too good.

For some reason I just can't seem to get to sleep, so I am usually awake at night and then into the morning, and maybe might stay up until 10, 11 or 12 n the morning/afternoon. Then I may fall asleep around 12 or so, and then wake up at 4 or 5 in the afternoon, lol.

I take some tablets that help relax me, or are supposed to, and they used to work but don't seem to have such a great effect on me anymore. But sometimes I usually just listen to music if I am trying to fall asleep. TD helps me fall asleep with some of their calm music.

It's been over a year since I've had a full night sleep.


I've had insomnia for many years, but it used to be different and follow a pattern. It would go 4-10 days where I couldn't get to sleep, then finally fall to sleep 2-3 hours before I had to get up. Then I would go 4-8 weeks when I slept normally. It didn't really bother me much because I knew the pattern and knew it wouldn't last long. Plus, I didn't toss and turn all night, so I still got rest even if I didn't sleep.

Then about 3-4 years ago it completely changed and got much worse. I think it was because I was working in another state living in a motel for 8 months. Living in a motel that long really gets to you. It gets to the point where you just want to get the heck out of there. I wasn't getting the normal exercise I usually get from working on the house, in the yard, etc. Just walking into the motel room was a source of stress.

After about 6 months I suddenly couldn't sleep any more. Three hours sleep was a "good" night. Usually it was only 1-2 hours. It was always just before I had to get up that I would finally fall to sleep. I started going to work late (my boss knew what was going on and understood).

I never got to the point that couldn't work at all. But after 4-5 weeks straight of no/little sleep I could still work but could not multitask. I could work on a project, but if someone asked me a question about another project, I'd have to really concentrate to remember what project they were talking about. Once I remember it, I'd be fine (more or less). Once I finished the contract and moved back home, I started sleeping normally almost immediately.

For the next couple of years things were OK, but I still had times with no sleep. Not like the old pattern, but not like the time in the motel either.

About September/October of 2006 the insomnia hit me real hard and I haven't had a full night sleep since then. For about 4-5 months I was only getting about 30 - 90 minutes sleep per night. Unlike before when I wouldn’t fall asleep until late at night, I had no trouble falling to sleep. I just couldn't stay to sleep. After 30-90 minutes I woke up and rarely went back to sleep. Sometimes after laying there for 4-5 hours I might get another hour sleep if I was lucky.

After a few months is when it occured to me that I didn't think I was dreaming - not at all. I didn't really know for sure though.

It slowly started getting a little better over the next several months. By spring of 2007 I was up to 3-4 hours a night. And by summer I was up to 4-6 hours per night. 4-6 hours wasn't bad, at least it didn't feel like I was constantly in a fog. But there would still be nights with little/no sleep at all.

Then it started getting worse again maybe 2 months ago. I was back to 30-90 minutes a night. After about a month I started breaking down. It had been going on too long and my body and mind just couldn't cope with it. I started getting highly emotional, sometimes very depressive and had an extremely hard time concentrating. And my memory has gone completely shot. On the worst days, I don't think I remember more than 25% of what happens or what is said. I can be talking to someone and be in a dream world somewhere else. Here at HC, if I'm talking to someone on HCM, if they write back after 5 minutes I have no idea whatsoever what they are replying to unless they quote me. I can usually remember after several seconds of concentrating. But sometimes it's a complete blank.

I started drinking more and more over the last year just so I could get to sleep. But I won't let myself drink too much. That's NOT a good habit to get into.

About a month ago I finally decided to try sleeping pills. They worked OK. I went from 30-90 minutes to maybe 3-4 hours almost right away. After a couple weeks I was up to 4-6 hours sleep on most nights (but sometimes much less). The biggest change is that it shifted my sleep time to something a little more normal. So my day/nights are about 3-5 hours earlier than they were.

Of course you can't keep taking sleeping pills. I decided at the beginning to try them for 2 weeks then take a 1-2 week break to see what happens. Then take them 2 more weeks, etc. Currently I'm during the first 1-2 week break without them.

This just CAN'T keep going. My mind is in such a freaking fog I can physically feel it in my head and it feels like it's going to explode. My ears ring almost constantly. I have to really concentrate to write something like this (much of the reason I've turned into a spammer over the last year if anyone is wondering).

Bottom line is, this sucks. I would LOOOOOVE to get 10 hours sleep for a couple weeks straight just to see what it feels like, just to remember when I could still think straight.

I swear my head is about to explode and I wish that damn ringing would go away.

Nyquil contains Doxylamine Succinate which is the same thing I was taking. And 5 lids is only a slightly higher dose than I took.

BTW, I went to bed once tonight. I slept for about 10 minutes then woke up. After laying there for over 2 hours I got up again. I'll try again after 2-3 hours.

If books was the cure none of us would have this problem.
Some of us dont like taking pills period.
It's all a bunch of experimental on a human body nonsense usually anyways.
Regardless it's a disorder & sometimes it's tough.

Actually, I've heard that resting with your eyes closed in a dark room is nearly as good as sleeping. So for you guys who can't sleep, don't play games or read or anything, just do the resting part and you'll be fine... i think.

How long can your brain survive without sleeping? It's about one week or something right?

Recently I have been having bad problems falling asleep. I can go to bed very tired, but there is so much on my mind that I sometimes cannot fall asleep for a few hours and just lay there. Then I finally I finally fall asleep, wake normally or sometimes I sleep very long but when I awake, I feel awfully tired and want to go back to sleep. But these are recent things... Month at most. Too much stress I guess.

That's my next step *shudders* after trying the sleeping pills. The doctor will most likely do one of two things. Give me sleeping pills, and I've heard that the prescription ones are not much better than what I have now. Or send me to a sleep clinic which will run all kinds of tests. My best hope is that there is some kind of physiological reason for the insomnia and it can be easily fixed.

There are several common sense things that help, but it's a matter of experimenting to see what works. Unless the doctors find something physiological, they will do the same thing I'm already doing, meaning experimenting to find something that works.

Will, it sounds like you might be staying in bed too long. And you shouldn't be in bed after noon. I'm similar, my body really really wants to sleep between 12:00 and 2:00 in the afternoon. It doesn't matter what time I go to bed or get up, it still wants to sleep at that time. And sleeping then is NOT the right thing to do. Ideally you really should sleep at night when it's dark.

Your circadian rhythm is your bodies natural clock. It resets when it get light. That's one thing a sleep clinic will do is use a VERY bright light on a timer to shine in your face at the same time every day. This works for some people and not others.

When your circadian rhythm resets, it's like setting the time on a regular clock. It just makes sure the clock is on the right time. Depending on the person, your body does not have to sleep at this time, but for most people it's best to get on a day/night light/dark schedule.

Your body sleeps best in the dark. The problem with artificial light is that it can be used to make light when it's dark outside, but it's very difficult to make dark when it's light outside. Ideally you want complete dark, no sunlight through the windows, no night lights, and even LEDs from clocks and other electronic devices can hurt the sleep cycle of some people.

Yea, I know, this stuff is easier said than done. I haven't managed to get on a day/night schedule yet either The best thing about the sleeping pills was getting my schedule a little closer to normal.

Won't a lot of exercise help at all? I mean, if your're bloody (physically) tired, I dunno how your body can resist.

I heard meditation (including yoga) helps. A friend of mine who usually travels all around the world does this. You know for people like him they don't taste bed very often, so sleep must be done in-between travels (flights, airports) which is not convenient. He learnt some meditation and he said that helps.

If you're really desperate, here's a remedy you can try.  Eat some spinach (or other dark green leafy) at the same time you eat some tomatoes.  It works for me, although I'm not really normal...

It helps, yea. But it's not a cure all because being tired really has very little to do with it. I can be so tired that I can't keep my eyes open and my brain has shut down entirely, and I might only sleep a couple of hours.  Acu does labor for a living and he has insomnia. This is one thing I've been working at, getting more exercise. I'm making progress with ever increasing stamina. And it's still a good thing even if it doesn't help me sleep

Spinach and tomatoes. I'll have to remember that next time I'm at the store Do you have any idea what the mechanism is?

As for yoga/meditation, it's a chicken or egg thing. The meditation sure wouldn't hurt and would probably help, but at the same time it's very difficult to do when your completely tired. I meditated for years so I know how to do it.....as I said it's a chicken or egg thing.
