say, can't you put it's head more in the center of the avatar? I don't mind that a part of the face of that woman is on the avatar too.

Animated avatars
The size policy I use for avatars is 2 Kb. All images are optimized to be under 2 Kb or 2 Kb in size. This keeps the board loading faster for our modem members. Unfortunately animated avatars are about 6-10 kb in size and will not go with the policy. You can pick a still shot out of an animation however and choose it.
