ICTC3: The Observatory

*NOTE*UNCOMPLETED AND STILL IN BETA STAGE*/note*

name of faction: The Observatory
Name of empire: Estel-Nahn (ces-teal Naah)
Capitol: Perad-laguin (P-Rad Laa-Joon)
dominant race: Aetholytes
Philosophy: Things can only go up.
Motto: enlighten the world
Assosciated colors: Yellow and grey or yellow and blue
Associated symbols: a scorpion, 3 sided pyramid, aurora
realm: Ashan, plains east of ranaar
History:
The aetholytes are a native people. They have always been known to the world of ashan but as events unfolded they were often too far away to be a big influence or help. But as the world expanded and populations grew the Estel-Nahn was born. There was no real wars because most of the focus was found to the west but several small border wars and defenses agains't hostiles still persisted.

Lifestyle:
High class: the royalty and the scholars of aethosociety are often the most rich. Their sole task is to take the signs from astronomers and decide on a course of action. The high council is included in this group.

Upper class: the upper class consists of the elderly and those who have made great advances and can afford a manor. Their lifestyles are of leisure and pleasure no expense is ever spared. They host parties of great degree and numerous guests are invited. Simply having your name in "the book" is a guarantee to be invited to most of the parties. the greatest of respect and care is provided for the upper class and they are often abusive of it. A good deal of the upper class keeps their brains sharp and are careful to take advantage of the lower classes "keeping them in place".

Middle class: The middle class is constructed of the remainder of society. due to careful taxations by the king they are often barely making it through. Their lives often feature no excitement or fun. Most are farmers. Their respect for the upper class is misguided and very few have a good education. Once a year they are invited to the Life-Dawn festival. a festival celebrating the passing of a new year and the life it brings.

Lower class: This race having some strong connections with magic doesn't employ slaves or laborers to do things around the towns and cities. Instead small sentinent spheres of magical energy known simply as gnomes serve as the basic laborers for aetholyte society.

Appearance: Aetholytes are Humanlike forms covered in glyphs. Their skin is often of a darker shade and they have great magical potential. Their bodies are also have good stamina. their one true weakness is the lack of pigments that has caused them to avoid activity during the day.

Gnomes
Gnomes are only an example of what aetholyte mages are capable of.
their existance is only for labor. Aetholytes gain energy from cosmic events and by learning of events they can gain knowledge of themselves.

Customs: it is customary for the eldest son of the clan to become the next chief. Also Fridays are heralded as sacred. It is considered rude to Not slurp soup. Their diets traditionally consist of fungi and various gathered plants. Pinapples have a great significance in this society and is a staple, the most valuable pinapples are brought in from the fertile farmland of heresh where peacful caravans carry important goods between these friendly nations.

HOW IT WORKS:
Aetholytes are essentially a twilight acadamy.
Their creations however are incarnations of heavenly bodies drawn and shaped by skilled aetholytes using the elemental powers of their very own bodies. Aether is Void material its purpose is to create temporary wormholes to bind and call heavenly incarnations down from the sky. the lifeforce of the summoner is required to gain control over the created incarnation.

Allies: Heresh, The Dark elves
Friendlies: Elves , Dwarves
Unfriendlies: Demon hordes, orcish hordes
Foes: The mages, The holy griffin empire

Town view
Ok now close your eyes... I Know you didn't close em yet so close them.

Now picture a moonlit grassy hill-land.
Now place a mini stone henge on the peak of the highest.
On the sloping hills there is a small building, wooden and white, it is surrounded by cobblestone and houses. the street slides down the hill and stops at an inn before taking a forked junction. to the left is a busy marketplace with lanterns moving around in the darkness. and to the left is red light and the gentle smoke of a blacksmith. farther away from our streets are manors.  go back to our highest hill again. at the base is a Wall ,stone and a gate. but the wall circles the whole town and ends as a brick in the beggining. There is a cave in the smallest hill and a nest at the top surrounded by some trees. in a valley between this hill and the highest there is a pond filled with an assortment of fungi. finally in the heart of the town a great telescope protruding from an observatory peeks into the sky. past the musty veils of the night and onto the space beyond. going back we see in the sky an amazing spectacle. a brilliant shimmer is in the air and the aurora cimmera can be seen.

Now for some of the important info.

The hero is to be called Astromoner

They have a
40% knowledge on level up
20% spellpwr on level up
20% attack on level up
20% defence on level up

they have a

12% luck
12% dark
12% logistics
10% racial
10% summoning
8 % enlightment
8 % leadership
4 % sorcery
4 % destructive
4 % defence
2 % light
2 % attack
2 % warmachines

chance on level up.

I will be using the H2 way but also with altenative upgrades for some tiers based upon the terrain. or even alternative creatures.

Tier 1: Gnome->lanturn
tier 2: Terroid
tier 3: Nomui
tier 4: Lunavibrum
tier 5: Aetholyte->Cosmonaut
tier 6: Scorpion
tier 7: Beholder->Argus

here is how my alternate upgrade system works.
Units have Base tiers. base tiers are like a neutral stance.
If an observatory town is built upon a grassy area for example the lanturn can upgrade into a flathead. However if the town is not built upon a grassy area and the hero is on a grassy area then the lanturns are automatically upgraded into flatheads, as long as they are on grasslands . as for the flarids if the flarrid is the base tier then you have an option if you wish them to become iccoids.

alternate upgrades

tier 1: ->Flathead gnome (Grass)
tier 2: ->Iccoid (snow)<-> Flarid (lava)
tier 3: ->Nomui arakja (dirt)
tier 4: ->Geovibrius (underground)
tier 5: none
tier 6: ->Optipilus (non desert)
tier 7: none
Balancing is coming shortly

CREATURE histories and abilities.

Gnomes are the building blocks of aetholyte society.
being small incarnations of planetary bodies summoned from the heavens they are naturally composed of small quantities of earth and large quantities of aether. Their sole purpose is to do tasks for their fattened masters. due to their abilities, aetholyte society needs weight management programs.
Abilities: Flyer, elemental, Faithful Servant - This creature can absorb damage meant for another creature.

Lanturn: when a gnome's composition reaches old age chemical reaction between the air and aether create a heatless flame. The gnome having nearly no purpose is placed into metal cages and is used as a source of light. In battle lanturns can involuntarily explode.
Abilities: Flyer, elemental, Explosion

Flathead Gnome: Lanturns that manage to lose their flame often become a flatheaded gnome. Flatheads are sturdier than gnomes due to the fact that little remains except for aether and earth mana sapped from the metal caging. this causes them to be more powerful carriers of objects. A flatheaded gnome can fetch several gold pieces at a market.
Abilities: FLyer, elemental, Sturdy servant - can carry a small ally on its back (ally being flown loses all defense as a result of being very visible.)

This faction sounds like a kind of wizards that have intrest on astronomy, but have nothing magical. It would have been much better if you added another concept for the town, except of the astronomy, because a faction in HOMM cannot be based only on that. With astronomy only, how will you find creatures for it?

Using the Zodiac .  There are 12 symbols in the Zodiac, I am sure something can be came up with.  And some of them like Gemini could be very interesting.

i'm working on the magical half of the faction. but i wanted the focus on astronomy.
Edit: thats kindof why gnomes are in the town. Up next is gnomish history.

Cohesiveness: 7/10 (seems to fit reasonably well)

Imagination: 6/15 (some potential can be already seen)

Back story: 6/10 (solid so far)

Battle facets: 1/10 (nothing to say about it yet)

Discretionary: 0/0 (don't know what to give her, sadly this faction is unfinished)

20/50

Mamga, mamga, where art thoust information?

Cohesiveness 5/10 - Its based on how much of the entry was actually completed. What was given was slightly out of sync with each other. The absence of a racial hampers it significantly.
Wow Factor 5/15 - About how much actually impressed me. Sorry, but an incomplete faction just is a turn off.
Back Story - 6/10 - The bulk of your points. Its what keeps you from getting a horrible mark.
Battle Facetts 2/10. Hmm, 7 into 10 goes about 1.2 times, so, give him a little credit. 2 points for your imcomplete lineup.
Discretionary - 3/5. Its for effort and sympathy. Yeah, mamga, I said sympathy. Its not a good faction unless its a complete faction.

Total Score: 21 Points

Like I did for the gunpowder alliance, I'm not going to give a mark and just suggest the OP to work for the next ICTC3. Every possible mark would have little meaning for a faction that is expressedly uncompleted.

The Observatory

Cohesiveness(2+1)=3
Imagination(3+2+2)=7
Back Story(0+1)=1
Battle Facets(3+0)=3

Discretionary: -1 for no emblem

This entry is severely incomplete!

Total Score=13

How I graded these:
Cohesiveness (Internal Coherence [1-5]+HoMM Compatibility [1-5])
Imagination (Creativity [1-5]+Innovations [1-5]+Originality[1-5])
Back Story (How well it expands on one of the HoMM universes [1-5]+How interesting it was to me [1-5])
Battle Facets (Variety [1-5]+Inventive Aspects [1-5])
Discretionary (Bonus for exceptional efforts[1-5])
