Why don't you test them all in combat? You'll get the best results.

PS: Do it more than one time so you won't be stuck with just one answer (An Efreet can defeat a Wyvern and vice versa)

You'll never see a one-on-one battle in a real game, with no spells, artifacts, other creatures, strategy... so I never understood the point of these "tests".

Yeah I remember now dread knights don't have the jousting bonus in heroes 3, but they do in heroes 4 and also have regeneration and terror.

I was playing with all the units a bit and I think dread knights actually are the best level 6 unit. Probably because the ghost dragons aren't very good the dread knights have to make up for them.

Go to map editor, put two heroes (one with one creature and one with another), set their stats at 0, erase their secondary skills and don't give them any artifacts. Play the map and try it on different terain. That should do it.

Under what circumstances exactly? How many units in how many stacks? Is waiting allowed? How about spells?

If you try 100vs100 splitted stacks and waiting allowed, removing moral (because it evens out at infinite anyway), then you'll find that speed is the mightiest stat, while if you merely want to see how much power those stat really gives (by letting them pound on eachother with no tactic), you'll find speed worthless.

It does give an idea of the power of the creature to a certain extend. At least if you're not brilliant at math. Take Naga Queens vs. Champions. It's not that obvious the Naga Queens won't only win, but mob the floor completely, from their stats alone. However the difference in power pr. unit will be huge and you'll see this in such a test. So if you in a real fight it's the champions turn, you'll know the Naga Queens will be a more serious danger, than what you might have thought.

I wanted to say 1v1. Stacking them will not show how good a creature is, but how a group is strong.

A completely lineup of all town units compared should be balanced.

Some have weaker level 6, but stronger level 4 for example.

So it really doesn't make any sense to campare tiers from the same level 1on1...

While an angel may be stronger than a behemot, I can have that behemot on day 2, while the angel has to wait until day 5 at least to appear. During those 3 days, I (stronghold) could have recieved big advantages due to harder fights done already, which will be hard to hold up for the Castle player.

It's really hard to get both a balanced line up and something you can use in-game. Especially if you don't know what to expect from your opponent.

When I played heroes for the first time, me and my friend would wait some months before attacking the computer (we'd also play on normal difficulty, go for capitol first, etc. but nevermind that). If we were to test the town we had the easiest end-game fights against the computer with, we'd have to, from game experience of how many units the computer have pr. time frame on the given difficulty, set an uneven battle up. I'm quite confident we'd find out we'd win easily with any town under such circumstances.

Had we been fighting eachother, and since we were sitting next to eachother both playing very passively, it's likely we'd have about equal amount of growth to our units and somewhat equal heroes. If we also had noted how often we'd get different artifacts (we never cleared any kind of banks, except utopias, but that was only because it was "cool" to fight dragons), then I suppose we could set up, what would for US be likely in-game end fights had we ever fough eachother. In that case we could probably find out which town we were best fighting against eachother with.

Naga Queen and Dread Knights by far.

Honorable mention to the Cyclops though. The wall smashing ability can be very useful during a siege, not to mention that it's an awesome ranged unit second only to the Titan and definitely tips the scale towards the stronghold. Although the 20 crystal requirement is a royal pain in the ass

1) efreet sultans.  speed +flys.  nuisance to attack.  armageddon strategy.  can't be blinded.  considering the damage that fireshield does, might as well consider their health to be 100, not 90.

2) magic elementals.  magic immunity is invaluable.  armageddon strategy. very cheap - arguably the best deal in the game for it's price.  might as well say the damage range is like 30-60 since they almost always hit 2 or 3 stacks at once.    if they get in your face, and you try to attack them back you often end up making the relation hit many of your creatures.  sometimes you don't even want to attack them b/c the retaliation will hit multiple of your creatures at once

the question i usually ask myself to determine what the best creatures are for their level:

what will be the most annoying creature type to fight in a horde or throng?

for me this is easily efreet sultans or magic elementals.  it's just annoying having to deal with them

easiest to defeat: cyclops (they are awful when you get in their face, which is easy to do.)

It's a toss-up between Naga Queen and DK for me, as well, but I'm going to have to take the road less travelled and say Wyverns. Why? They're rubbish, aren't they? Yes, but they come early, which makes them great for creeping, and if Hives are enabled you'll be able to make up for their general crappiness with bolstered numbers. Certainly not the strongest, but possibly the "best." Efreeti also get a special mention; they don't stand up against the top lvl 6s, but they're so necessary for Inferno, whereas DKs are only a compliment to the already-powerful skellies and Vampire Lords.

Worst is far and away the Cyclops. Whatever benefits it might have are completely offset by the absurd dwelling cost. 20 Crystal? For a lvl 6? That's the same as upgrading your lvl 7! And who's going to take Cyclopses over ABs? Plus 20 ore, and 20 wood for the pre-req Ogre Fort, make for what has got to be the least cost-effective unit in the game.

If they're just being sold at a creature dwelling on the map, sure, I'll take them over Manticores and the like any day. But if I've got to build it myself? Not a fan.

Honestly, saying Wyverns are the best because of Hives is a bit silly. That means Hives are really good, not the unit. Obviously if Hives gave Dread Knights instead of Wyverns that would be even better, because Dread Knights are better in a same number comparison. You should just look at the numbers actually recruited from your Fortress town.

It's like the people who say skeletons are the best level 1 unit because of Necromancy. Well, then Necromancy is good, not the skeletons.

I'm quite the noob, but let me frame it this way: To me, creatures need to be evaluated for their usefulness as a whole. The fact that you can pick up a couple weeks' worth of spare Wyverns from the Hive make them more useful - more useful for everyone, sure, because you can pick them up and have a small amount of extra lvl 6s, but especially for Fortress, because you can integrate them into your army.

For a 6th level unit to have the possibility to bolster its numbers beyond any other 6th level unit is, in my opinion, an advantage of that unit.

Maybe, but Wyverns are statistically very weak compared to other level 6 units. Their low cost and quantity only compensate for that.

Anyway, Dread Knights = pure badass.
EDIT: Magic Elementals come in second, forgot about them.

yeah the magic elemental can pose a tactical nightmare to have to deal with.

also i would argue that they are easily the best deal in the game at only 800 gold each

the only annoying thing is you can't resurrect them, but then again they rarely die so rarely need to resurrect them lol

The best 6th level unit is obviously dread knight. Chance of double damage is great ability. And dread knights have also high stats. Naga queen is good too but I think that dread knight is better.
