Also, lets not forget great games like:

Kohan series: 1st game was one of my favourites, no 2 blanded it out a bit. Favourite faction - Nationalists

Battle Realms - Warcraft 3 before Warcraft 3. Went out a year before WC3 and featured rather similar engine and game.

Empire Earth - 1st part - was like huge expansion over AoE 2

Settlers 2&3&4 - only loosely a RTS, but great games nevertheless.

Not- RTS but strategy games

Have you heard about Europa Universalis 2? Or 3? EU 2 is in my 10 favourite games.
Or have you heard about Legion, Spartan, Gates of Troy or Chariots of War (they're very similiar). Turn strategies.

And I own with Tau, I think...
Since I've never played a real multiplayer game in Dow I can't really say, which is sad since multiplayer is where the game is best. I love talking strategy btw.

My normal strategy (If it doesn't work I freak out and stop playing)

Queue 1 builder, two stealth teams and jetpacks
First builder starts with Tau barracks, second unit helps and then starts with plasma gen.
Barracks queue Tau commander and 1 Fire warrior team. Commander upgrades to Heavy Flamer (extremly important!), he then places 1 or 2 mines in the enemy's most likely direction.
Builders start with listening post, once it's built, you should have enough resources for a second fire warrior team.
I keep on the defensive until Path of enlightment is built and I get my Pathfinder team out. Then I slowly march towards the enemy, throwing mines in front of me from time to time to stop those annoying melee guys.

This strategy usually works, although I often encounter problem with teleporting heroes (Big Mek, Necron Lord) who can avoid the mines and slaughter my Fire warriors. Like many Tau players I nearly never buy vehicles, it's simply not necessary, unless you have a big amount of resources of course.

Excellent! One thing though... the traps cost 35 energy, I see you build many generators pretty soon then? I see them more as a late game thing, when you have more resourses. I usually go for Vespids soon, even though they are horrible expensive... But with the Tau Commander and jet packs, they can destroy a lot of Listening posts in no time, because of the ability they have. Not good against Necrons though. I always loose against Necrons btw

In multiplayer, full barracudas own any base

Also I would think the commander before the fire warriors would leave you very vulnerable to a rush... especially some Guardsmen..

That's why the flamer is so important, it breaks moral in seconds. Target aquired help against attached commisars. The traps are for early game rushes with melee heroes.

@Minion: Vespids was a good strategy, but in Soulstorm they don't have the instant recruitment time, making them ineffective and expensive. About the Generators, I build at least one extra to get path of enlightment more quickly, after that I need more power to get the Plasma Rifle upgrades and the Tau commanders anti-vehicle weapons, not to mention the Commander's mines. So yes, I build alot of generators.
