Fortress vs. Stronghold vs. Rampart

I will soon be engaging in a 3-way battle with two friends, most likely in hotseat. One of them is going to use Stronghold. Another will most likely take Rampart. I, of course, shall march to war accompanied by the slithering of Basilisks, the rumbles of Gorgons, and the buzzing of Serpent Flies. Now, I'm at least as experienced as both of them (possibly better) and am fairly confident that I can take Stronghold, but Rampart intimidates me a little. What strategies can you give me in general?

well, about cleaning the map it doesnt matter what town is the opponent, you do the same. So probably we are talking only about endfight.

Obviously rampart have the huge range firepower - the elves. So your goal is to neutralise his elves.

If you play Balance and if you have tazar, your will have LOTS of lizzards, and they will be almost invinsible to the elves. So probably you can outshoot him. If this happen you have the edge.

Either way what you need is expert haste, because if you cast expert slow he will counterattack you on his green dragons turn.

If he outshoot you expert haste is must for you. If he doesnt, still expert haste is very usefull.

If it turns out that you dont have expert haste, but only expert slow - try first to kill his dragons with the gorgons. You know that probably. But the problem is that he will hide them good and your slow cows will have difficulties reaching the greens.

Fighting on your terrain will help a lot, so a strategie can be pretending to be weak, so he come to your territory to fight you. Thats offcourse if you dont meat in middle area. If there is big treasury area you cant afford to give him the initiative there.

I am pretty sure he is playing 3DO standard random map
(I didn't know Balance can be played as 3ffa though...)

So maybe you tell us the map setup first (difficutly, monster strength, water...etc..) and if u are allowed to chose your starting hero or not.

With this informations, you will recieve a much more precise reply

You got me here. Too much talking about 1 vs.1 games. I already do it by default without even thinking for different scenarious.

maybe you should be more afraid of dendroids than of elfs.
a blocked dragonfly / gorgon / hydra isn't very useful

It depends on which map you're playing. Short way to each other, or long way? Have you time to upgrade your creatures before one of your friends come running along?
The ground is also important. If its swamp, Fortress has an advantage, and if its rough, Stronghold has an advantage etc.

I would fear Stronghold more than Rampart i think But, as said. It depends on which map you're playing, and on your and theirs strategies.

Standard random map, no rules. Diplo allowed, but I intend to see that Conflux and Necro are not used (not that either of them can effectively skeleton-farm).

My other friend is switching to Tower, which has me enheartened as he says he only goes economy the first week, meaning me and Stronghold will easily be able to rush and kill him. That's what we're planning to do, at which point we will turn on each other.
That being said, I'd like strategies for both just in case. I expect Tower to go magic, and Stronghold Crag Hack as I advised him to. I, of course, shall be the indomitable Tazar.

I believe Rampart is going Tower now, however.

And by "as skilled as me", I meant "pretty crappy". Neither of them really appreciate how good diplomacy is, and the Rampart guy loves magic anyways so he won't take Ryland, but rather a magic hero.

Ryland is the best leader who starts with diplomacy. The only might-hero with diplo

How big is the map? Is it large enough for diplo to be usefull?
Prefer Magic Hero? Well, I don't want to say anything, though I know what i think about it..

I believe it will be a Large Random, as that seems appropriate for 3 people.

Unfortunately, it's also going to be hotseat most likely. However, if it comes to a field battle I should be able to lure my enemies into the swamp.

EDIT: Never mind, he's staying Rampart as Stronghold threatened to switch to Conflux if he played Tower, for some reason. (Personally, I thought Tower would be easier to beat, but w/e.)

Looking at the creature matchups has me enheartened as well.
Level 1: Advantage Rampart
Level 2: Advantage Fortress
Level 3: Advantage Fortress (a little, IMO)
Level 4: Advantage Fortress
Level 5: Advantage Fortress
Level 6: HUGE Advantage Rampart
Level 7: Advantage Rampart

Stronghold has me worried though, because of the insane boost Ogre Magis have over normal Ogres. Rampart seems to be going magic hero (no worries about diplo) and Stronghold guy is fairly new, so he didn't know about the tactic of using fodder! I'm not sure if the other guy does either, or if he knows how to effectively wait, but we'll find out.

Also, can anyone enlighten me as to the nature of the "Hydra trick" for ownz0ring neutral creatures? I'm taking a lot of crap for playing a "crappy town", and about how Fortress "sucks", and I would dearly love to throw it back in their faces.

I disagree with some of them.

Level 4: I would say that Stronghold has an advantage.
Level 7: I think that Stronghold's Ancient Behemoth is at least as dangerous as the Gold Dragon. That speciality is extremly powerful.
Level 2: Wolf Raiders are better units if you can keep them alive 3-4 is the best damage done by a 2nd. lvl. unit, and they also have two hits. The problem is to keep them alive so they can attack and deal that extreme damage.
Level 3: It's shared with Rampart I guess.

Aha, didn't know that. Perhaps I should have read your post once more before I started writing
How would it end up if you included Stronghold in the Comparison then?

Obviously, ogre magi beat the crap out of GBs and Pegasi, who are a joke. Basilisks are in range of Ogres, but the ridiculous HP boost Ogre Magi get means GBs just can't compete. Only advantage they have is stoning.

Also, ABs wreck all other level 7s, of course, but I think wyvens will beat clops.

I agree there

I think that Ogres are a bit better, but not that much. Maybe they are as good as each other. To be honest, I don't know exactly
But do you think Lizards are better than Wolf Raiders?

Wolf Raiders are better than Lizzies, but he won't attack them anyways so it's a moot point.

Rampart guy is apparently going might, he thinks that an Archery hero with golden bow (if he gets it, lol) can shoot down Mighty Gorgons under Tazar's control. He's gonna be in for a nasty suprise the first time he shoots...

Grand Elves, go!
Grand Elves used Doubleshot!
*twang* *twang* *ping* *ping*
It's not very effective...

Essentially, the Age of Heroes article listing Fortress as weak against Rampart has him superconfident that Fortress is a piece of sh*t and that it has no chance. He somehow expects Grand Elves to eliminate my entire army, lol.
He also laughs at how Fortress is so slow, apparently he's never heard of a spell called Haste, or one called Slow...
If he goes economy first week, he'll get suprised when I show up with 3 Hydras Week Two. ^^

Creature match up for me

Level 1 and Level 6: Rampart rules
Level 2 and Level 4: Stronghold rules
Level 3 and Level 5: Fortress rules

all of them 2 and the winner is

I think Ancients good than Goldies because their speciality rocks. I like Hydra date frpm Heroes 2 but they are weak than AB or GD.
