H5 Anniversary!

Today marks two years since the release of the original heroes 5, May 16 for Europe. Not much by HC standards but it feels like one heck of a long time. I had joined the forum a little later even though I spent some time lurking before that.

More than a few things have happened since then. For one there was a transition time from newbie to a responsible poster(when not in the wastelands ) though I had some good influences that helped, namely Alcibiades, Doomforge, Towerlord, Felunio and TDL amongst others. The friendly environment made me feel at ease so it was not long before I became more involved with the community – be it in strategy debates, gathering info for upcoming expansions, TDL’s weekly quiz and generally helping around. I was even manipulated into moderating this place

It was around the second ICTC that I got to know some people better. People come and go but I have met some interesting guys(and girls) here, some of which I can call friends. And that’s what matters in the end, the relations you make – not the actual forum and the discussions it has to offer.  I thank those who made me feel welcome and I hope you feel likewise.

Where H5 is concerned things have also been interesting. I was a bit of a theorycrafter but eventually developed some actual skill My rl heroes buddies are gone for some time now but toh gave me the chance to compete again and renewed my waning interest in the game. Thanks to destro23, sq79, buxyrs and samiekl for helping me catch up. Seems that online is an entirely different case from single which may explain why I find certain comments amusing.

Overall I can say that H5 has been a self-improving experience for me. With any luck we will get some more heroes goodness before long but for now TotE is pretty satisfactory.
In the meantime the heroes discussions are still going strong long after TotE has been released. There are many things to be added and more qps to be earned Hope the trend will continue while waiting for the elusive 3.1 or a next installment if heroes

What about you? Well apart from those side-effects

                                                      ----------

Of course we can’t have an anniversary without

A recap of H5 history up to this point

Fabrices Original Announcement

Who would have expected H5 to be released after the H4 fiasco and nwc/3do problems That was a major surprise and especially so learning that ubi had bought the rights. Hard not to have high expectations.

Fabrice Q&A

Development and general questions.

The Save Heroes petition

You may laugh as much as you want but that was pretty serious at the time. The beta was terribly bugged, unbalanced to the point of being nigh unplayable and shortly before the (unfinished)game’s release the fans made a petition to postpone it and give time to Nival to polish it some more.
Funny times, the wraiths and spectrals were incorporeal, all good spells were in summoning school(yes, both town portal and resurrection), sprites had summoning mastery in their wasp swarm and they could also clone themselves. No idea what they were having. The petition worked thankfully.

Starforce Removed

You have probably heard of that one, there was quite a fuss. For those who don’t know here you can see how evil it was

Dev letters

Some time before the game was out Fabrice started publishing dev letters each dealing with a specific subject. Atm it does not seem special but back then we absorbed every last piece of information like a sponge Interesting seeing what they had in mind during the creation of the game. You may want to take a look at chuckle’s post with the spell names…

Wardancer tattoo.

Cool. Not that I’d ever do that on myself.

[url=http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1851065692/m/5651041154/p/1]First patch [url]

The first of a total of six. Boy that was sucky. Few changes were made and each patch used to bring new bugs. Yay. What was really interesting was 1.3 where the game took another direction.

The HoF patch is one of the most notable for totally revamping the necromancy and capping the severely overpowered training. Also added the missing victory animations

Heroes 5 Fans Manual & Seal of Approval

Remember ubi’s original manual? Worthless. However the fan manual is easily one of the best if not the best game manual I have seen. Good move on ubi to give the seal of approval and kudos to the people who spent their time on it. We owe you guys!

Hammers of Fate Announced

Good times, most exciting period. Caravans and dwarven town! Also lips move in the cutscenes

Tribes of the East

I guess I did not expect orcs and I rather liked the naga race as an idea. However they have proved to be a lot of fun – heck I am in an orc clan Not much to say, the game is amazing and the campaign was very satisfying – challenging and imaginative. You may remember my epic thread, If Alc had not been deleting the spam offtopic posts it would have reached and surpassed 200 pages

Clarifications and dev diaries

Thanks to Acheval for organizing them so neatly A shame she left.

That’s all I could think of, feel free if you have something to add. Oh and happy anniversary!

Not much to say on the matter, have you? Meanwhile I found a more detailed timeline in wikipedia.

In August of 2003, Ubisoft acquired the rights to the Might and Magic franchise for USD$1.3 million[1] after 3DO filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Ubisoft announced their plan on developing the fifth game in the series under the direction of producer Fabrice Cambounet. This news bred controversy as New World Computing under 3DO had already started making the fifth Heroes game. Although, along with the Might and Magic brand, Ubisoft gained access to NWC's developments on Heroes V (which envisioned it as an isometric 2D game on the Heroes IV engine), it was decided to throw them away and create a completely 3D game.

Who knows what 3do's H5 would be. For one though there would be no need for constant patching and silly typos

   * October 2003: Development began (approximately)
   * March 30, 2005: Ubisoft officially announced that the game was being developed.
   * A closed beta began in late 2005; it is announced that the game will be released after March 2006.
   * On January 10, 2006, Freeverse announced that the Mac port had been arranged.. This version has first been presented at MacWorld 2007.
   * An open beta began on January 23, 2006 for GameSpy subscribers, with non-subscribers able to join on January 26.
   * On April 5, 2006, Ubisoft debuted a free minigame related to the game.
Had totally forgotten about that, was not interested enough to try.
   * On April 9, 2006, Ubisoft announced the release of a Heroes V Demo sometime in that week.
   * On April 12, 2006: Ubisoft decided to remove controversial StarForce CD copy protection from Heroes V. The company stated they will use another form of CD copy protection instead. The game shipped with SecuROM, while the Russian version shipped with no copy protection whatsoever.
   * On April 13, 2006, Ubisoft released a Heroes V Demo.
Wasn't bad, I liked that specific mission. Also had a couple of single scenarios.
   * On April 20, 2006, Ubisoft announced that Heroes V had gone gold.
   * On May 19, the game was released in the UK and Russia.
   * On May 23, the game was released in the US and Canada. (on limited edition DVD-ROM and on 4 CD-ROMs). The limited edition DVD-ROM contains material not included in the CD-ROM release including the complete game soundtrack on audio CD. The Limited Edition also includes HoMM III and IV remastered to work on computers running Windows XP
   * On June 5, the Limited Collectors Edition of the game was released in Poland.
   * On June 6, the first patch was released, updating the game to version 1.1.
Meh.
   * On July 20, the second patch was released, updating the game to version 1.2, and adding many new features, but still lacking the much sought-after map editor. A lot of bugs were fixed in this version including a bug that would crash the game after playing it for 2 or more hours. Multiplayer was fixed up and some grammar errors were corrected although some still remain. A 'Hall Of Fame' was also added as a high score table for single player campaigns and skirmishes.
   * On September 13, the third patch was released, it contains the map editor and various other features and fixed many bugs, however it also brought back a few bugs, such as the initiative bar being out of sync.
And units left out of the battle disappearing.. Still good effort at rebalancing the resource costs.
   * On November 11, the fourth patch was released.

To market Heroes V, Ubisoft has also created Heroes Mini, a web-based game using the Heroes V units.

   * On March 1, 2007, Freeverse released Heroes V for the Mac.
   * On May 3, 2007, the fifth patch was released.

For some time now people have been wondering how much H5 actually sold since its release. While the overall picture hinted that the results were quite satisfactory there were no official figures.  Until now.

By official information from 12.2007, in Russia, CIS and Baltic States, HoMM5 sales Including addons and special editions(excluding Gold edition which was released later) exceeded one million copies. However in mentioned countries one copy price vary from 12 to 17 US dollars so we can't accurately calculate the profits.

Where world-wide sales are concerned (excluding CIS), there is no official info but it was mentioned (not by UBI) that they are greater than CIS sales so over 2 million copies. Wow that wemt well
We can look forward to better things in the future

Thanks to Mistweaver for the information.
