My preferences

Web browser: safari (mac) or iceweasel (linux). Under windows, I rarely browse the net, so, anything that is available.
Music Player: totem (linux) or vlc (mac).
Video Player: mplayer (linux) or vlc (mac).
Image Editing: gimp.
Creating Figures: dia (all platforms), xfig (sometimes in linux), jfig (mac)
Writing Documents: LaTeX
Editors for documents: WinEdt (windows), or kile (linux), or Texmaker (mac). Sometimes, when I have hard time with greek under mac though, I use Textwrangler.
"Compiling" latex documents: MiKTeX (win), texlive (linux), MacTeX (mac).
Compilers: Under win, whatever comes along with Visual Studio Express, otherwise gcc (linux, mac)
IDE: My favourite had always been Visual Studio 6 (win); however, the recent Visual Studio Express is also great with some minor experience I had. In other platforms, it really depends on the language. Most of the time though, I want to make minor changes and I use gedit (linux), or emacs. Of course another good idea is KDevelop, but I rarely use it nowadays. Under mac, I uniformly treat everything with Textwrangler apart from C/C++ for which I use xcode.
Math Software: Maple (available for all platforms), or gnuplot (again available for all platforms). The choice depends on the application.
Torrent Client: Transmission (mac), and  Azureus (linux, and in the past in mac).

Oh, and I use the terminal a lot!

Well Ash, except for games, I doubt you can beat me in that aspect.

Let's just say, I use: Total Commander for organizing AND viewing files without opening them (it has a "File Viewer" in binary/hexadecimal, REALLY helpful you don't have to be a complete nerd to make sense out of it either ).

What can I say, I don't think I would be able to enjoy my experience with the computer and all the nicely organized structure without it. I like because:

1) It doesn't have rubbish "stylish" buttons or "aero" stupidity (I need a systematic functionality, not a Las Vegas presentation!)
2) It has two panels, which both can have a variable number of tabs
3) You can look at every file systematically, and move/copy them easily between the two panels, no need for Cut/Paste annoyance
4) Did I mention that it's systematic and clean without stupid "OMG cool graphics" or other ****?

I use Firefox as my browser, with NoScript addon, so nasty sites need me to allow JavaScript or Flash first

Sygate Personal Firewall as my Firewall, it's very good, and it's very light (i.e doesn't eat many resources). It is mostly "manual" (i.e asks you) but I find it better than auto-signatures.

and uhm, a lot others that I won't list them here. My desktop is also very clean currently, because I have everything:

1) Organized in the Start Menu
2) Organized on the Harddisk and easily recognizable with Total Commander

My Current desktop (as you can see, besides the "obvious" Windows stuff, only Total Commander is there )

@Death: I love Total Commander and you're right about that Lister, just select a file and press F3 and you immediately see its contents, whether it is binary, text, or something else

For example I've seen people that don't know how to open an .xdb. Well, with this Lister you immediately find out that it's just text so a program like Notepad could open it.

Also Total Commander can enter Zip files just as if they were normal folders, no need to open them with WinRar or something else and extract the files (you can view them directly with the Lister - but not edit them though)

As for my other programs I use:

- ZoneAlarm as a Firewall
- Firefox
- 3ds Max (though I'm not very good at it)
- Photoshop
- Hamachi
- WinRar
- WinAmp
- Nero
- many others I don't want to list

Oh yeah, that reminds me, I use Norton Firewall 2002 as my firewall.

And Total Commander seems a lot like FAR, except FAR doesn't have tabs. They're all Norton Commander clones anyway.

I'm good at both and I have a LOT more than that (even Zbrush) and not only in 3D/image, but a lot on sound (some excellent ones are free as well).

I also have 7Zip as an archiver...

because I'm too lazy to list them, let's just say that clicking "Properties" shows 821 shortcuts in the Start Menu (I know some programs have more than 1 shortcut btw!)

I know you're not serious but can you drop that? I mean seriously, it's not even funny. I doubt you can get even close to the amount of work I've done on it, and you talk as if "it's nothing". At least if you don't find it useful then at least don't act like you would know better. No seriously, don't tell me to chill out, I've had enough of that remarks already, and it's not like you wouldn't know since it would be the first time.

What I said above is that I have too many to list. That's all.

I'm kind of embarrassed.  I've been using TC for years and I didn't know that ;P

some other things TC is good for:

-You can see every every file within a folder.  You can even do this to the entire computer, although I wouldn't recommend it.
-Shortcuts for everything, for example you can make Ctrl-Z the shortcut for opening the desktop
-I use the multi-rename tool pretty often

There's also a quick shortcut to open a file with Notepad: just press F4

You know what's funny? The fact that I didn't even wanted it to be funny, I only meant that I have a lot of them so there's too many to list. It's not my fault you interpret it the wrong way you know...

You know you can change the default editor too, I use a different one (it came with another package, an assembler, MASM).

also I use eMule for finding stuff that i can't find on rapidshare or other sites otherwise. Even though it's incredibly sloooow (because it puts you on a "queue" and you have to wait for others to download from the same guy, since he has a limit on his upload after all).

Clearly this is not brag, is it? (especially with the "" smiley at the end)

And about Total Commander, there are other interesting shortcuts, such as:

F5 - Copy a file (the default path is displayed as in the other panel)
F6 - Move a file (same path as above)
F7 - Create Directory in the current path in the current panel

If you don't want to continue then why did you make this useless post? I think you should by now my addiction to that smiley, but it's not like you wouldn't know.
