What's wrong with telling my experience with cool software
It's not like I programmed it. I'm putting it here so you guys can take a look if you're interested. My message was like:

"Personally Pidgin is very good and fast, you should give it a try."

rather than "Haha Noobs see what programs I use!!! I'm DA BOMB"

I'm trying to be constructive. I simply stated why I find pidgin good for me. Isn't this thread supposed to be for software discussions? It's not like I know all the software out there, so if anyone has some obscure not-very-popular-but-good soft I would be glad to hear it

Ok here's an interesting software: Windows Live Messenger Looks better and has more features than Pidgin (in MSN, that is, doesn't even work with a lot of protocols - but who needs more than MSN anyway?)

It's slower, it has more features but not that many (pidgin improves, now has custom smileys in chat -- the only thing where i couldn't get them to work was in convos, but I could see the others').

It doesn't work with many protocols, and you need an "unofficial" patch to even get rid of the ads. Don't tell me it's more "official" than pidgin.

Less protocols, unofficial patch, slower, but slightly more features that aren't that critical.

on the other hand, this:

That's the kind of bragging and being purely subjective tho

I could say the same but I didn't. I only told what pidgin has and why I find it great, not saying "everyone needs 3 protocols right?"

I prefer having a better-looking messenger and with more features than being a little faster which is barely noticeable anyway. Custom smileys are very important in a convo (you can make jokes with them, etc, and that's sometimes the point of a convo), unlike a stupid small speed increase

Let's compare some features like:

Pidgin's :P :

MSN's :P :

You can now figure it out by yourself!

And? If you find them more important good for you (although you can use the normal smileys for "expressions" and the custom ones don't even fit nicely but heck you'll say anything to be conservative ). Although the speed increase and all that is TRUE and is objective, that is I just said it's faster. I also said it doesn't have crappy GUI, which is both subjective (the crappy part) and objective, since it is indeed true that it doesn't have that GUI. So I did something constructive, I explained about it.

[sarcasm]"Who uses xyz anyway?" is very constructive

and what we need is william calling others noobs and you add up to a very constructive software discussion [/sarcasm]

It's clear that you didn't see the jokes with custom smileys we did in some convos - maybe you were present but you couldn't see them

And they're not only for "expressions", as I said you can make jokes sometimes with them. Not to mention, do you really think it's important to "fit" when making jokes? (for example, most don't have a transparent background)

Anyway the pidgin one looks like a retarded face that can't keep it's tongue in the mouth.

First of all, if TheDeath brags about how many programs he has then just let him. Does it really matter anyway? What is the original purpose of this thread? To discuss what software people have. What has TheDeath done? He has told people what software he has and how many programs he has. Let him say what he wants for once.

Asheera, it would be good if you could get it out of your head that Pidgin sucks. Yet again you say things about something which I doubt you have even tried. I at least took the time to install and try Pidgin and it is actually pretty good. Sure, it doesn't have all of the features that Windows Live Messenger has but it sure is a hell of a lot faster. Problem with WLM is all the bloated things with it. Advertisments, features that aren't useful and all that stuff. Sure, you can patch WLM to take away all that unnecessary crap but the point is, you shouldn't have to. It shouldn't have come with the software in the first place. Again, Microsoft are making their newer programs more bloated with unnecessary stuff. WLM has it and so does Vista. I wonder what's next.

You also said that WLM looks better. Who cares if it looks better? I admit, it does look better but at a massive cost of performance. It is slow, much slower than most messenger programs. Again, to mention Vista, they made a big improvement how it looked now didn't they? But what did that mean? Well it meant that the actual OS required more and it made a significant performance decrease than in other Operating Systems. They concentrated too much on the GUI and with other useless things that they didn't stop to think about the performance of it. Much like WLM. Have you noticed that if you compare the video conversation speed with WLM and MSN, that MSN beats it easily? I have video conversations a lot of the time, and one thing that annoys me is how damn slow WLM is. Much of it has to do with how it looks. It also takes up more system resources than in previous MSN versions.

The speed boost in Pidgin compared to WLM is very noticeable. All though I don't log in to Pidgin that much (because I am too lazy), it sure beats WLM in a lot of things. Only thing it isn't better at is all the bloated things in it. Oh wait, Pidgin has none so I guess that is a poor example, lol. WLM is bloated beyond belief. Maybe you could listen to others and their opinions on programs and then maybe try them yourself instead of always thinking you are right. Because trust me, you have a lot to learn, Asheera.

Pidgin is great because it is fast and it allows you to connect to several other protocols, such as AIM, yahoo etc, just to name a couple. Why is that useful? Well say if you have a yahoo and a msn account, then you can just log in and talk to people you might have on your yahoo but not on your msn and you can talk to people who are on your msn but not on your yahoo. It's very useful and it is a much better program than Trillian is, for those who have tried it. Plus, Pidgin is free and honestly, who cares what features it might have or not? What is the purpose of a messenger program? Isn't it to talk to another person? It's like how phones are today. Their main purpose is to call another person, but these days they have so much added stuff like phones built into them, being able to access the Internet, games etc, and it just is a waste. That wasn't what phones were meant for. Sure, the extra features are nice, but wouldn't you just want a phone to call another person? I want a messenger that can allow me to talk to another person. Any other things are just a bonus in my eyes.

You have to try Pidgin before you can really say anything about it. If you haven't tried something, then don't comment on it. Because when you do comment on it, it just makes you sound like a noob who has no idea what they're talking about. Seriously.

And whoever compared Pidgins smileys with WLM, who really cares? Pidgin allows you to add custom smileys anyway, so if you really want to you can just add the WLM smileys and you are all set to go.

And mvass, lol.

Now I know a lot of what I said has been said before, I don't care. I just want to get my own words out because it is quite annoying seeing some of the same old stuff as usual.

lol, I could say: "Who cares if it is faster?"

And yes *I* care if it looks better

Not to mention WLM has no slow-downs whatsoever for me. As I said, if I would try Pidgin I wouldn't even see it's faster.

And funny how you say that you just want to talk to another person, and any other features are just a bonus, when in the Video Player you said that it isn't important to just play as many formats as possible (analogy -> handle as many protocols as possible), but much more important to have other "features" that should be just as a bonus You contradict yourself

No, you totally misunderstood me. I meant that  media player is a media player if it can only play 1 format. The other ones are just bonuses because of all these different formats that are available nowadays.

Yes, you could say "who cares if it is faster" and I am pretty sure most people will care if it is faster. Who wants a slow program? I sure don't and I'm sure many other people don't either.

I can now see why you and TheDeath have so many arguments in threads, it's because you don't read the posts properly, and you just showed me that you don't. I don't care about other features, if it can play one format then it is a media player all others are bonuses. There, is that plain enough for you now?

*sigh*

lol but you contradict yourself. You could as well say, with an analogy with a chat program: "I don't care about other features, if it can handle one protocol then it is a Chat-program all others are bonuses."

But apparently you said the opposite with Pidgin

I mean seriously, it's like this (an example):

Media Player handles MANY formats, but lacks some features Program X has. Program X handles only ONE format, but has more "bonuses" than Media Player.

Pidgin handles MANY protocols, but lacks some features WLM has. WLM handles only ONE protocol, but has more "bonuses" than Pidgin.

So first you said that you'd prefer Program X, since it can PLAY something (doesn't matter how many) and has MORE features than Media Player.

And now you said that you'd prefer Pidgin, since it can handle MORE protocols, but has LESS features than WLM.

Don't you see it's complete opposite?

Since that is obviously something not very constructive, I only expressed how Pidgin is in the first place. If I say "it doesn't have crappy GUI" then it is objective that it doesn't have it (of course "crappy" is subjective). You then say that "Who cares?" but that wasn't even my point and you are not even being constructive -- I just detailed why I like Pidgin and why I use it. Which is what this thread is about: discussing why you use a certain software.

I don't expect people to say that they agree. But if they are interested they could give a try to Pidgin, for example, based on what I explained about it. At least my post was constructive.

I actually said I mainly liked Pidgin because it was faster and didn't have as many features. In my big post above, I mentioned that Pidgin was good because it could handle multiple protocols, but that doesn't mean it necessarily has more features. Pidgin has less features than any one of the protocols that it can handle. And my main post was mainly about WLM and Pidgin, so if I was to use MSN under Pidgin then it is a lot faster than if I just ran MSN because of all the useless features MSN has.

Get it now?
