In assassin's creed people come at you and you kill one at a time with an awesome impaling animation  It's almost like they come in a row to be killed one by one.

It's actually an appropriate commentary on most action movies, where the throwaway baddies approach the protagonist one by one, despite their far superior numbers.

I also guess the association to action movies makes sense - although I didn't get that myself.
