The tree's roots grow deep. Cut down the tree, you may, but you won't find all its roots.

If we hadn't have invaded the Iraq, all that would've happened is that a Tyrant would have gone unpunished and we'd be in fiscal independence. If we just stayed out of it and stop claiming it was in the name of justice, then all this would never have happened. I think we completely overreacted to the terrorist attack. Sure, it was a malign thing to do, but we didn't have to launch a Crusade about it. The problem with the situation now is that we're lost in the scheme of things. We can't find all the tree's roots, and those roots are tripping us far too often. We've taken our blows and we still feel obligated to free Iraq. I think we're in an infinite, inescapable loop. If we stay, our state of affairs will collapse at home. If we pull out of the war, then all the trillions of dollars would have gone in vain, for we've done much but accomplished nothing.

The U.S. is making a very similar mistake to many past superpowers: it's biting more than it swallows. You can attribute it to all sorts of things, but to sum it up, it all  falls down to kindergarten business logic: don't spend more money than you make.

So yes, the fact that we borrowed billions upon billions of dollars from the Chinese government to pay for the war in Iraq is one of the causes. The fact that we think it's a bright idea to donate billions of dollars to Israeli defenses each year is one of the causes. The fact that we are massively increasing our budget while simultaneously lowering taxes is a big cause. I'm not a democrat, but I despise a republican that borrows and spends even more than a democrat that taxes and spends. Which is why I don't support either of the candidates running right now because neither of them are actually trying to solve the real problem America has, because both of them are chained to the whims of special interests groups. Most Americans are rightfully upset with the current administration, unfortunately they are turning to the mainstream democrats assuming that they are going to be much better, which they won't be. They're going from one false hope to another.

edit: And going to war with Iraq was an idiotic idea. One of the main reasons the terrorists are attacking us in the first place is because we've been over in the Middle East screwing things up since the end of WWII. Heck, in 1953 we couped the Shah of Iran, who was a democratically elected leader. And we wonder why Iran hates us? So by going over there and warring with them, we are merely propagating terrorism. Al Qaeda is delighted that we are over there because that's exactly what they wanted us to do.

I am under the impression that Husein was a pretty bad yet powerful guy who would at least sell WMDs to terrorists.

Funny, it almost sounds like you're talking about America's Government, what with the CIA sponsoring of Al-Qaeda and all
