ToH Arena Champion 2008 (Rules and Registration)
As there are several players who enjoy arena at ToH nowadays, and Zilo doesn’t have the time to host another tournament in the near future, I will step up and try to fill the spot.
Registration
Registration starts on 17 november 2008, and the deadline is set for 1 december 2008 at 12 PM GMT. In this interval anyone can register for the Tournament, the only conditions for joining are :
- you have Tribes of the East (3.1 version)
- you have(will get) Hamachi installed
In order to register for the tournament, you have to post your nickname, msn address, Hamachi nickname, and an estimate of the time intervals when you are available for gaming.
Ex:
Nickname: Towerlord
Msn: radudinca@gmail.com
Hamachi: Towerlord
Availability: after 3-4 PM GMT
It is best practice(but not mandatory) to use the same nickname, in Hamachi as the nickname used for registration.
Also you must join the Official Arena Tournament Network on hamachi:
Network : ToH Arena Champion 2008
Password : arena
All games will be reported in the Special Report Thread on HC, which will be created right after registration ends !
Tournament Rules
The Tournament starts on 1 December at 12 PM GMT, and the deadline is set for the 31 December at 12 PM GMT.
The Tournament will have two distinct parts:
- groups
- playoff
Recommended game settings for the tourney:
Time limit: 15 minutes
Simultaneous turns: on
Animation Speed: max
Autosave: on
Dynamic Battles: off
Battle Scenario:
First turn (day 1) should be skipped in order to create autosave.
During second turn (day 2) both players level-up, buy army, visit memory mentor and do anything else they want to do. Day 2 ends with both players in the center and in the position ready for fight. Then autosave right before the battle is created.
Third turn (day 3) is for battle. The winner of the battle is the winner of the game.
The Battle takes place on neutral ground for both players, and the game(games) is recommended to be hosted by the player with a better connection  !
1. Group phase
There will be one, two or four groups, of 8-12 players each, depending on the number of players registered for the tourney. In the group phase, everybody faces all others from the group in two games. For victory in every arena game you gain 1 point, a loss brings you 0 points!
In the group phase, games are all random style, but every player gets the possibility of three restarts for the whole tourney.
You can use the restarts whenever you feel like, but be careful, after they are exhausted you can never restart the game again! Also, a player can restart, only in the first turn, after that there is no way to stop the game.
Also if the number of players is not very good for splitting into groups, there will be a free spot, in the playoffs for former champion of arena Strider, or maybe even for all top 3 players.
2. Playoff
The best 4 players from each group advance to the playoffs, where they will be matched against players from the other groups. The matching system depends on the number of groups, and it will be explained after the registration is over.
In the playoffs, we will use a strike-out system:
- first player strikes out a town for the opponent, then the 2nd strikes out a town for the first, then it’s first player’s turn to strike again … and so on until four strikes.
- after that 2nd player chooses his town, out of the ones not striked by the opponent
- in the end 1st player chooses his town also, and they proceed to the game
The heroes are random!
The battle is fought on neutral ground !
Ex:
Towerlord strikes Sylvan
Zilo strikes Necro
Towerlord strikes Necro
Zilo strikes Fortress
Towerlord strikes Dungeon
Zilo strikes Sylvan
Towerlord strikes Fortress
Zilo strikes Academy
Zilo chooses Inferno
Towerlord chooses Dungeon
The player who wins 3 games first, proceeds to the next round!
Additional Rules:
If battle ends with cast of the magic that kills every creature on the battlefield, the winner of the game is player who cast the spell. Same rule applies in similar cases (e.g., using Raise Dead on living creatures and losing them all at the end of the battle).
Town-portaling back from the center is not allowed. Yet, if the player has more then one hero, second hero can bring additional army to the center during Day 2.
If one player is not in the center of the map at the end of the Day 2, he has to transfer next day’s income (500 or 1000 gold) to another player, who can use it at Day 3. In this case autosave before the battle is made at end of Day 3 and battle takes place at Day 4.
Possible Disconnects
If disconnect happens during loading of the game, game is recreated with random town/hero settings.
If disconnect happens during Day 2, game is loaded from autosave.
If disconnect happens during final battle, replay should be made and the battle should be replayed turn by turn in exactly the same manner as it was. Yet, as replaying whole battle turn by turn is pain in ass, if both players agree, they can use different solutions (either replay the battle without turn-by-turn repetition or send the replay of the battle to jugdes, who will determine the winner).
Official Tournament Map
Toh Arena Map, is in progress, and it will be ready for the tournament. The mapmaker is Zilo, and the changes are submitted by Towerlord(me), but everybody can make suggestions for the final version in here

About the 15 minutes turns issue :
- first of all those are the recommended settings for the tourney, but if the players mutually agree they can set their own rules (no limit and so on )
- second, if one player doesn't make it in time to the middle, he has to send his next day's income (500 or 1000) to the other player
About the hero building issue, I strongly suggest that the newcomers try a few games on the previous version of the map:

Hello people.
It will be a pleasure to participate to that new tourney. I will make some mates aware of this as well. I hope we will be even more numerous than the previous one.
MB you should register sinchduck as well ? His computer crashed recently, but he should have a new one soon, dunno when though... I'll try to contact him.
PS : Don't you think the deadline is a bit short ? 'Cause there are all those feastes of the end of the year, with many preparatives and stuff ; so people might not be available at that moment...
I let you judge about this, it's only a suggestion.

You can make registration for Sinduck, by posting his info for him.
About the deadline ... If there are groups of 8 players, then everybody will play in group phase 14 arena games, and i think that is really easy to do in 2 weeks. After that , in playoffs, I might extend the deadline if necesary.

And I didn't read that before, but I saw this strike out system... I find it quite absurd cause 4 factions is just too much, and no people will be mad enough to pick Inferno to play with.
That also supress all randomness of the tournament.
We can be sure as well that Dwarven will be forbidden at each turn.
And also, in the plays off : why not to divide the groups into winner & loser bracket ? There would be more match to play for people and those who were unlucky at beginning of the tour should still be able to play the finals...

I have Hamachi ver. 1.0.1.5 , there is a myth that it is the most stable version so far... but all versions are okei i guess.
On the other hand, first week of registration is over, and the results are not that great so far... I hope this second week of registration will get a lot better, and the undecided step up and take the challenge!
Some ToH support wouldn't hurt either, meaning some prestige icons and points to the winners ... to make things more attractive for some of the good players of the tournament.

With the official map almost ready, and few days till the deadline, the last phase of the registration is very important for determining the format of the tournament.
We are seven contenders right now, and if things don't improve alot ... we're gonna have only one group ... with 2 or 4 finalists in playoffs , or we might have just a final ranking without playoffs , but it all depends on how registration goes

The Tournament map is ready ... you can download it now !
I will post soon the ChangeLog ... and maybe also a intro for new players, in the tournament.
At the moment, we have a full group of 8 players... and few time for registration left
So unless there will be a registration Frenzy tomorrow, we're gonna be playing in the one big group only format... with first four places advancing to the playoffs.
where they shall be matched like this :
1st place vs. 4th place
2nd place vs. 3rd place
On the other hand, registration takes only one minute to make, and you get a lot of fun in return, so actually we could double or triple the numbers in just one hour, and change the plans completely
