Well, the novel posters generally stayed on their own in LHW, but I agree that kind of posting doesn't lend well to collaboration. On the other hand, the shorter posts that allow more collaboration generally end up comprising a line or two of dialogue until someone in the group takes charge and decides to progress the story, at least in my experiences.

RSF and I went on AIM a few times and wrote single posts through alternating lines of dialogue and details of our characters' actions and interactions, and that worked out pretty well. That's probably the best case scenario for pure collaboration, although it requires perhaps the most work. Sometimes it can be difficult to sync up the writing styles and such so that the post isn't just a mess of back-and-forths, and most probably aren't looking for that level of commitment, especially when an RP's starting out.

As for which works best, that really depends on your writing style. If you wanted to collaborate with only one or two other people and don't mind the extra effort needed for it to work, then I'd certainly recommend collaborative posts. For something like a PRP where there are only a few PCs, back and forth "novellas" could work provided each member agrees on where to go and what to do and/or can adapt to the plots laid out in others' posts. Smaller posts work best in a more casual environment, like a humorous or parodic RP, but only if everyone drives the plot along at some point. Otherwise, it can turn into something like Tanaran.

I've spent my word quota for the day. *goes into hibernation*

Try using the google thingy where you can write simlutaneously for doing collaborative posts. That could work pretty well.

Then I have this idea for collaboration and it only has two participants!

B.A. had like eight and it has gigantic posts and no collaboration. I can't guarantee lighter wordiness, but I can guarantee that most characters stick together.
