Microsoft wants you to pay for your usage

Microsoft wants you to pay by how much you use Windows:
Quote:
Microsoft's plan would instead monitor the machine to track things such as disk storage space, processor cores and memory used, then bill the user for what was consumed during a set period.

Quote:
the company admitted that the overall cost to the user might be higher than for a standard PC purchase.

Five Reasons Microsoft Wants To Do This
1. The Road Has Run Out On Microsoft's Traditional Software Licensing Business Model.
2. The Pay As You Go Model Makes Microsoft The Sole Toll Taker.
3. Microsoft Wants Your Credit Card.
4. Google Is Eating Microsoft's Breakfast, Lunch And Dinner.
5. Microsoft Wants To Control The Horizontal And Vertical Of Your Internet Experience.

Great so now even Operating Systems become MMOs with monthly pay

I don't know, maybe they're planning this for "Windows 7" (has no nickname yet). I sure hope it won't happen with my XP.

Come on, you can't expect this to be real. They will eventually be out of business if this happens. No one wants to pay for an OS similar to how you would have to pay for an MMO, it's just stupid. lol.

Did you guys even look at the patent?

@william: Think that Windows gets updated everytime to make sure it remains compatible, and all new features and programs available for 'genuine' users, just like MMOs do, and they say that's where your money "goes to".

Like I said above, you can't possibly expect this to be real. There is a very small chance that this might just be real but I doubt even that. I don't even need to look at the Patent because I read your post and it just seems like such a stupid thing that would happen.

Plus, when did you become Gullible for such things?

Your "point" has no substance, no rational justification. Of course it could be a joke, I don't know, the webpages it links to seem genuine (especially I think, the patent webpage).

Hmm.. what if it were posted on MS site?

I analyze stuff before rejecting it, unlike you, just because it "sounds ridiculous" (you won't get far in philosophy with that ).

Yes I acknowledge it could be a joke but I don't see any "sign" of that, YET. Please do give one, I hope you're right

I once couldn't install windows after formating the disk untill I plugged in the net cable... and on the other one I got a constant blackscreen untill I unplugged it. Weird

Oh and if these news are true you might actually see something like "won't boot if not online" or you'll get a monthly fee regardless of usage if you're offline

To me, scanning and sending info on your PC to the mainserver is like opening another passage for hackers. Maybe it's not a big deal though, windows is already like a free highway to them

Is Microsoft purposely trying to fail? They're not irreplaceable. I'll either stick with my XP and not update it, or will have to overcome my dislike of Linux or Mac OS and switch.

I would think it more likely that it'd somehow "remember" what I did and send the bundles later about my usage...

Anyway, this is a total jerk move

I can't say for sure, but I don't think this is a joke. It's also not anything new. This idea has been talked about for years.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft is not the first one to bring it up. I'm just talking off the top of my head with memories many years old, but I seem to remember Oracle talking seriously about this at one time. They might actually be doing it now. You might not be familiar with Oracle because it's commercial software, but I think they are one of the largest software companies.

The thing is that even though it's been talked about for many years, it's either not being done at all, or it's only done on a very small scale with certain specific applications. Bottom line is that people don't like it, whether that dislike is justified or not. And if the public is strongly against it, they are highly unlikely to do it.

And getting a patent is meaningless. Companies tend to get patents for anything they think of "just in case". A very large number (maybe most) modern patents are never used for anything. Also keep in mind that patents come in many forms. Much of the legal protection of a patent is the underlying technology and process, rather than the specific application. In other words, this patent of MS can be used for lots of things besides what that article is about.

Besides, pay by use isn't necessarily bad, but people react to the idea like it's bad. I mean we pay for a lot of other things by use, such as telephone, cable TV, cell phones, etc. I'm not saying I like the idea, I don't like it any more than anyone else. But the fact that people don't like it is why it hasn't been implemented in the past and is unlikely to be implemented in the future.
