well Hexa, I couldn't find it on astralwizard or h3trio, but I will try a few more places.  Sounds interesting, but I don't know if I can be called an experienced player or not
Anyhow, looking for it and playing it will give me something to do when I cannot get enough time together to play online, so sounds good to me.

I missed this thread when it first rocked up ...

I write reviews for AstralWizard partly because I *enjoy* writing reviews, and also because the site has a well-established culture of reviews - I think there are around 150 reviews of H3 maps, for example, and maybe 300 reviews of H2 maps, dated to at least mid 1998, and before that I don't think it'd occurred to people to date reviews.  Not sure, though, I wasn't around then.

Anyway, if you enjoy writing reviews, do so, whether other people say they like them or not.  And if you don't, then don't bother.  If you're in-between - if part of what you get out of writing reviews is the feeling that you're contributing something worthwhile to the community - *I* certainly think you are.  Mapmakers love both the feedback and the publicity.  Players appreciate the assistance in finding a map they will enjoy playing, or steering clear of ones they won't.  The more reviews, the better - at AW we *wish* we had at least two reviews per map; as it stands, most small and medium singleplayer maps get one, but XL/MP maps often don't.

One can tell a good review by the way that it lets the reader form their own conclusions independent of the reviewer's taste, and the way it provides constructive criticism to the mapmaker.  Then, too, there's the lack of spoilers (conveying the type of map without being too specific is a skill that escapes some people).

I think AstralWizard have the best reviewing habits I've seen anywhere, with reviews being linked from the map database for easy access.  MapHaven will go one better, linking back from the review pages to the individual maps!  :-)

(But then, I would think that, wouldn't I?  I'm the review editor for AstralWizard, and the creator/administrator for MapHaven.  However, having spent a bit of time poking around various sites, Hexa's reviews are the only ones I've seen that come close.  And we'd accept them without any hesitation.)

Sooner or later Celestial Heavens may work out what a treasure they have in you, and start linking your reviews and those of others from their map-database.  Especially given that they're likely to be re-examining the map-database for H4.  In the meantime - I won't poach, but, should you review a map that happens to appear at AstralWizard as well as CHU, we would be most pleased to post a copy of your review on the AW site ... :-)

Ya, the map reviews in AW are very helpful.
Time is limited and there are way too many maps out
there. So good map reviews can help you to choose the
type of maps you would enjoy more. Now, I only download
maps with good rating.

I have read most of your reviews (and the others) on the Astral Wizard site.
Always nice to get some feedback (positive in this case) from a fellow reviewer..

I have already made a list of maps that are present on both the Astral Wizard and CHU!@

Actually, links to Hexa's reviews already appear in our map database, while the review itself usually contains a single-click download link. Additionally, whenever someone comments to a review, the document moves at the top of the forum for people to see the newest replies.

And I know quite well how good Hexa is! After all, I had our map database and forum structure updated to publish Hexa's writings.

:-)  Forgive me for my ignorance - I've actually only poked through Celestial Heavens' map system once or twice.  I get more maps than I can possibly play (and review) at AstralWizard.

Heh.  At the moment it seems like age since I last played a game of Heroes.  Been busy writing MapHaven's map-handling code (which is coming along nicely - going to be all singing, all dancing ... and I'm having fun and learning lots doing it.)  I do have seven or ten reviews I'm going to put up at AstralWizard when the map competition results are announced - Angelspit, would you like me to send over a list of the relevant maps, so you can see if you have them and let me know if you want the reviews?  (I'm assuming Hexa won't mind company.)

Well... reviewers have time constraints too.
But don't be discouraged. Your last 2 maps were really outstanding. However a little shift in map making paradigms may provide a fresher feel in your next map. 'After' by Fizbin the Magniloquent (Chris Tiahrt) is a fine example of uniqueness.
I have a couple of ideas here and there, mostly tactical ideas for a map which will now never be completed. Drop me a line at zenithgod@hotmail.com if you are interested in including these in your new XL map.

Oh my, two posts in a row...well, I had this old review hanging around so I thought I'd post it here...forgive my illiteracy but I believe I wrote it under the effect of several pints

Map name: To Kill for Power
Mapmaker: Fiery Phoenix (Tang Wen En)
Map Type: HoMM III AB
Map Size: XL, Expert
Player Positions: 1H (Inferno), 7C (all town types save for Castle and Necropolis)
Special Win/Loss: Acquire artifact/None
Review based on map version dated: October 12, 2001
Date of review: February 22, 2001

Description: "You are Lyndor. Powerful, legendary, trapped. You vow vengence on all who have opposed you and all who are good. Swift, fierce, useless. That is, until now".

General comments: For once, you get to interpret the baddie of the situation. Lyndor is an evil warlock who, after being locked in an astral prison by some pesky wizards, manages to break free and shift back in time in order to take revenge on his captors. His quest will bring him to search for prowess in highest magic (ergo his hunger for the Spellbinder's Hat) and force him to face many challenging enemies including the mighty Elementalists Terra, Ignis, Aeris and Aqua. The storyline's flawless
consistency, excellent choice of words and sometimes sarcastic humour keep the player enthralled.

The first battles are fought with Inferno troops; at a later stage it is possible to recruit Tower and Rampart troops as well. Fortress and Stronghold armies become available towards mid-game but are too reduced in numbers to be of any use (save for Mighty Gorgons). Access to the four dreaded Dragons (Fairy, Rust, Crystal and Azure) is possible but not abundant. Lyndor's skills are all preset and although they may not be the very best choice possible (given the amount of Titans I gathered I'd have preferred Archery over Intelligence; Tactics would have been nice against the Wizards) they are in keeping with the storyline. The main hero's special (Sorcery) is of limited use in my opinion, but that will depend on the individual player's style.

Movement is fluid and fast (Logistics and Pathfinding are preset; access to the Boots of Speed and to the Equestrian's gloves comes early) and visiting each location is a feast for the eyes! The trimmings and decorations are out of this world - never before have I seen such a beautiful map! The map's ending is a masterpiece to be carved in stone - can't say anything else or I'll spoil the surprise.

The only drawback is the lack of custamization in a few quest guards, seers' huts and artifacts. Considering all the attention put into the storyline, the placed events and the sequence with which one learns spells and acquires
artifacts, a little more effort in that sense was in order. It's a bit silly when you find an artifact in a mushroom field and you get a message like "An old shaman stands in the middle of the road screaming at you in an unknown
language etc etc"...

General layout and aesthetics: Beyond perfection, no words exist to comment! 10+

Challenge: most battles are quite hard (unless you sit around waiting for your troops to breed - not my idea of fun) and the ramping is well-done (save maybe for the Witches and Barbarians, but it fits into the storyline).
Spell restrictions make things a bit more frustrating but never impossible. 8.5/10

Atmosphere and storyline: Perfect. The events are narrated with very literate and highly colourful English (save for a few grammar & spelling mistakes); the atmosphere is further enhanced by the amazing trimmings and decorations, and the ending is the work of a genius! However, some objects
require customizing. 9.5/10

Originality and creativity: In some places the map might seem a bit similar to 'The lord of war' (well, all XL maps based on a single superhero do, don't they?) but the troop mix, storyline, decorations and general idea are unprecedented. Superb. 9.5/10

Effort: I can only try and imagine how much time went into ramping the battles, decorating the map and putting in the marvellous storyline. A titanic undertaking for sure. 9.5/10

Fun factor: if you love XL maps with huge quests then this one's for you (no, no Bud =)). If you hate them, then forget about it. Yours truly gives this map 9.5/10

Some tips: Make it a habit to reload autosaves until "Month of the ..." events are no longer so, if you do not want to run the risk of pulling your hair out 50 turns down the road. Move swiftly, especially in the beginning: you'll need those Archdevils and Titans!

Bugs and problems: none, but as in many maps "Month of the..." events could place creatures in critical landing spots, thus making the game unfinishable.

Pros: challenging battles, outstanding decorations and a wonderful storyline.

Cons: could be even more customized; deserves a sequel or two =)

Reviewer's score: I played on Impossible and finished on month 11, week 3, day 7 for a score of 432 and Archangel rating.

Bottom line & overall rating: Amazing! 95/100

Review based on map version dated: March 31, 2005??

Date of review: April 8, 2005

Mapmaker's description: "1500 years ago a bright, powerful and wise hero managed to cage the two most vicious and deadly heroes of all time into a pandoras box. He then took the box to the caves of Shno and began travelling deeper and deeper into the under realm. He left the box so deep in world he suspected no one would ever free them.

Now, 1500 years later these two heroes have regained enough power to begin new subterranian empires which have caused earthquakes, whirlpools and volcanoes to spring out over the regularly peaceful overworld. The world seems to be crumbling all around the over worlders and they desperately require a hero to lead the most powerful army ever conceived against the exiled under realm lords."

General comments: Starting as blue, you are robbed of all your possesions day 1(start with 0 resources&cash) and on the following days you hear frighting rumours of powerfull heroes,and impish hordes.But fear not!Your land is fairly generous and the gods favour you with additional recruits to your troops at the begining ao each week.Shortly you control all the land and even engage some of the enemies heroes.You take control of some castles and so your kingdom begins to grow.Soon you are able to confront your first enemies:The orange and green kingdoms.Athough the fight are hard you manage to banish those pesky bastards from the lands that should have been your.But worse it's still to come...
You heard roumours about one hero hiring Azure dragons from underground caves, but haven't pay much attention to those.Yeah azure dragons..those are already extinct
Until...you meet him face to face.56 azure dragons, not really an extinct specie is it?Play your cards right and you'll be able to beat those.The key to defeating the dragons is...dragons

General layout and aesthetics:It is a handcrafted map indead.The mapmaker paid a lot of attention to details and that really mattered in the end

Challenge: Well it depends on the way you play the map!I play mostly on randoms nowdays, so rushing is my style, that's why i had to reload sometimes 500 Goldies is too much even for Tazar sometimes.Especially month 2.There is an imense amount of fighting involved with this map.I kept on wondering what would have happened if i had Galthran as main.Spell restrictions(TP) makes it a bit hard to defend newly conquered turf(especially when tazar has no wisdom ).

Atmosphere and storyline:
An intriguing storyline,but just a bit twisted for my taste .I took a look eerlier on the Map Heaven site and there was a list of criterias on wich a map should be judged and grammar&spelling was one of those(please mind things like:..."heroes much larger than yours)The atmosphere is great, lots of quests,lots of options to clear the map, it's not one of those maps, that practicly "leads" you, but gives a lot of liberty to the player.Just a bit too crowded though..

Effort:Especially cos it's a beginner's work i can imagine it took a lot of time to make, and a great deal of effort to imagine the storyline.Congrats for that!

Some tips: Well that's the part i'm supposed to say what i didn't like and want to see changed in a sequel.Honestly that's not much you can change in the general lay out and storyline.I warned you in another message though about the passability issue.There were several situations where a portion of the map was unpassable.The most important&annoying was after taking the Rampart to the nord of my home land i couldn't pass to the north est of the castle(where some arties and a dragon dwelling are).There are several events like that and it really damages the map image(nothing game breaking though..).One thing that really pissed me of was not matching the quests/strategical fights with the value of the reward.Here are some exemples:I fought 250 mighty moos(nearly suiciding)for 15 gems(in home area).I fought 150 green dragons for dragon lifeblood(quest) for 5 attack.I fought 500 gold dragons(toughest battle on the whole map for me cos i wanted it done too early) just to find 5 endless sacks of gold in that pandora box.Instead i fought 21 Wights for dead man's boots&vampire's cowl(those were a reward for defeating the Wights not random artifacts on the map)Later i've traded the vampire cowl for one Azure dragon.In conclusion you made lots of guests, some harder, some easier,mind matching the rewards with the toughness of the quest.Also you exageated a bit with those legions (fun to defeat though).
Then IMHO there were too many events near those whirpools and in the water in general(lol fighting all sort of things from elementals to black dragons).
Angels wings appeared again protected by the dark blue border in the western part of the map, but that didn't matter too much at the moment.

Bottom line & overall rating: It's a very good map! Had lots of fun playing it and i hope there's more where that came from.
