Dunno, I don't think there's any Mod shield template, but you can use this as a starting point and it's pretty easy to get the mod shield out of that.

The protos are pretty cool. That was my favorite race from Starcraft. Out of your pics I like the last two best.

Just so you know, I am capable of doing a google search and picking a bunch of images that could possibly make a good avatar. That's not what I'm looking for with this contest. I want to see what it looks like as a finished product. That's why I want it placed in the shield.
I think this was the image our shields came from but I can't be sure.

Yeah I think that's the shield MM, but it still needs to be 'emptied' if you know what I mean, because for some people it may be difficult to do.
Hmm I guess I'll do it, create a template shield avatar I mean.
EDIT: Here:
Just remember, a mod avatar is 65x89 in size, so you'll have to resize it after you do your work. Also it would be nice if you'd add transparency at the outside (for this you need to save as a .gif file)

Maybe this images are too big (over 5 KB). If so, I'll try to resize them.

You can't resize them, mod avatars should have the 65x89 size. What you can do is to lower the amount of colors the image has until it is in a reasonable size (and hope that it doesn't look ridiculous)
