New disease...
Mexico flu
Some sort of fever has already claimed 70 lives in Mexico and the disease has already spread to America... what will happen?
I always get a bit scared of these sort of things... I remember that bird-flu a few years back...
Fortunately I don't live in a city so I guess I'm pretty safe if it ever spreads to Sweden, also the disease is said to spread among pigs and I don't have many of those nearby... too bad it spreads among humans too.
So yeah, calm me down Hc.

Yeah well we got an earthquake today, a few hours ago, despite all the experts saying it won't happen. There's one crazy dude who "predicted" it will happen on Saturday, but he said it was going to be bigger (7.7 Richter instead of 5.something like it was), so maybe it'll happen some other time 
So if I'll stop posting, you know what happened... 
(no joke I was a bit shocked when it happened though; thankfully my bedroom where I type at the computer doesn't have any things that could fall on my head -- so unless the entire house falls in the quake, I'll probably be ok).
Oh yeah sorry for ranting here, since it's about diseases. I didn't feel like making a new thread though.

That's scary! But yeah, it does have a thing to do with this topic... why be afraid of diseases when death can come any second? (Like an earthquake)
But well, knowing death is coming is far more scary...

Another hysteria-planting device by medias.
Mexico City has 20 million people and not all of them live in a civilized way, also, not all are actually attending to a doctor when sick or able to afford medicine. I'm pretty sure ordinary flu kills a good bunch every year.
And why they don't mention that people who got sick in US got treated? Stupid medias. Always up for distributing more panic or paranoia. You recall that bird flu or SARS? Media also tried to make a big deal about it.
And they dare to call it a possible pandemia? Yeah, 70 sick people in a 20 million city is pandemic, all right.

If the dices fall correctly it will be a hell of a plague in USA but not spread beyond that.

The bird flues real danger was how it spread, but there was already enogh vacines at place anyway.
The spread on this one is actually smaller, in contrast to the bird flue.

Edit: The media is suppose to be trustworthy in ways, but when its tabloid like doom said its alsmost not worth watching the news anymore(lets just hope this is not tabloid and it strikes hard).

Here's the lowdown I see:
They believe its a pandemic because, like all viruses, they are prone to mutation. And most often, this is because of the steps taken to immunize the public. So if this Swine Flu, as it is so called, mutates, it could potentially infect additional lifeforms, and not just homo sapiens It could infect avians or marine life to be transmitted across the ocean. The pandemic relies heavily on the effort taken to stop it. If the strain of vaccine can be synthesized to destroy the threat, then the crisis will be averted. However, it is grossly exaggerated as it is, and the flu is just troubling right now. The real scare is its apparant end result, turning a healthy person into a corpse. I do believe that by the time the virus is transmitted to the general public, the general immunity will have grown enough to resist it.

You should look at the bodybuilding forum I post in. There's guys running around talking about how it's the plan of the secret Illuminati society to depopulate the planet.
Diseases can be scary since they're a danger you can't see, but this is being greatly exaggerated by drama queens. 8 people in the U.S. got it and none of them died. It's not even necessarily fatal. They already know of two medicines that are effective against it and the vaccine is in short order.

That's some interesting genocidal psychopathic insight. I hate to break it to you, but 3rd world countries aren't the ones burdening the planet; 1st world countries are.
And yes it's the developing countries that are the real problem since they won't be able to isolate and treat the problem nearly as effectively. I highly doubt it will be much an issue in the U.S., but it's much more possible this could tear up a good amount of people in central America.

As a soon to be MD, whose favorite area happens to be infectious diseases, I dont particularly believe an organism able to promote pandemia, would be figured out so precociously in its course.
We all know influenza virus and its nasty H1N1 H3N1(and so on) variants. Its not like they are new to us. As matter of fact they are not new AT ALL. If a global survey would investigate birds and swines I dare saying we would find it in various regions of the globe. For those variants are being formed and dismantled as we speak, in a continuous unstoppable process of mutation. Influenza virus mutate so dratically and so often that flu-vaccinations are made based on a estimative to determine the most seen variants that year.
So yes they exist, and not very rarelly either. Why are many of my infectious diseases teachers not concerned with that kind of "menace" then? Because this virus has to mutate into a form of high transmissibility among humans in order to pose a real threat. To this point, I must say Doomforge is indeed correct. Regular influenza kills way more than the H1N1 and H3N1 variants, on itself (and I do mean A LOT more). Which makes the whole panic scenario sound like media-induced-mass-hysteria.
Now lets suppose the worst happens and this particular variants indeed archieve the multiple required transmissibily mutations and turns out to be a threat. Opposite to the spanish-flu outbreaks in the early 20th, this time we have much deeper understanding of the flu transmition mechanisms; a MUCH more effective hygiene control; Biohazard concern, epidemy minimizing strategies, and so on. H3N1 would have to manage its way, not only through genetic impairments, but also be fast enough to bypass our actual modern epidemy management.
Sorry there folks, it doesn't convince my virology teachers, infectious-diseases clinicians, nor it convinces me.
Declaring the possibility of a pandemia in such a precocious moment is utter nonsense.

Good post, Wolfsburg.
I don't like "global conspiracy" paranoia, but it would be a great idea to allow the media to create a bit of global panic, and then throw in some vaccines. A gold mine I'd say.
Such behavior of media is a free advertisement to pharmaceutic companies. Leaving the conspiracy theories aside, it doesn't take a genious to take advantage of the current situation and quickly develop a vaccine. People more prone to propaganda would pay triple price to get one nowadays, I believe.
