Disturbed-Gnu, I'm curious, since I gave Grey Goose a WIDE berth until now - after all the French are definitely NOT known for therir ability to distill Vodka. (Moreover I DO think that for mixing Smirnoff and all the other bland stuff of that sort is the right thing since it's, well, bland. )

In any case, did you try the Level stuff (comes from Sweden, after all), and if so, how does it compare with GG?
For Polish Vodka there is of course Wyborowa Single Estate, if you mean that one?

I'm just saying it because i asked an older man in a wine-spirit store about vodka, and he said that grey goose was the socond best in the world based on critics and votes.. I' myself don't like vodka that much, but saying that smirnoff is god vodka is a crime! Vodka isn't vodka if it has to be mixed with something!..

Grey Goose is very good stuff, if you like neat vodka.  Unfortunately I got extremely sick on it one new years a few years back and that was the end of vodka for me.  I can't even look at the damn stuff without getting nauseous.  But if you're going to be mixing vodka with something else, in most cases you don't need an expensive one (unless it's a martini or something).

In fact... I think that was about the time I gave up getting very drunk.  I pretty much limit myself to two drinks max in a given evening, and those drinks are usually beer.

And JJ - I like a good single malt as well (I have an unopened bottle of aged Talisker in my pantry), but if you've never had a good bourbon (I mean, a good bourbon), you should give it a try.

Smirnoff is overrated, not to mention expensive. I prefer Finlandia.
Or go for a plain lithuanian vodka( known as 'govermental').
Still, beer rules.

Corribus, Bourbon is - or has been, at least, rare in Germany. So I made my Bourbon experience with Jim Beam first, which is about the worst stuff I can imagine (and I always said, in the more recent Jim Beam ads, when the guy empties his shot and says, that's no Jim Beam, Thank God for it, buddy) and then Jack Daniels, which isn't bad, but, well.

So suggest one, I'll try to get it here to taste it.

Makers Mark has reasonably good circulation and is a decent everyday choice for me.  It was sort of my first real introduction to Bourbon; has a nice caramel flavor.  I also like Knob Creek (actually made by Jim Beam - it's 100 proof and definitely has a burn, so if that's not your thing...), Woodford Reserve and Blantons, which are solid choices that have reasonably good distribution.  I don't know how easy any of those will be to find them, though, in Deutschland.

Of course, in my experience when it comes to Scotch or Bourbon, most people have a definite preference for one over the other.  They're quite different.  That said, I definitely wouldn't judge Bourbon by Jim Beam - a mass produced brand - and certainly not Jack Daniels, which isn't even technically Bourbon.  (The difference in manufacturing is quite important for taste; Jack is filtered through charcoal.) Jim Beam actually makes a few small batch labels which are much better (see Makers Mark, above) than the mass-produced label.

Also, many people who claim a dislike of bourbon (same goes for other quality whiskeys) haven't drank it from the right glass.  With good spirits, choosing the right glass makes a huge difference.  For instance, you shouldn't drink a good whiskey from a damn SHOT GLASS.  You don't get any of the liquor's nose!  A good quality bourbon should be savored in a snifter, or, at the least, a highball.  Ice should really be avoided, too, for the same reason - plus it also waters down the flavors.

(Note, too, that bourbons made from different grain mixtures can have enormously different tastes. It pays to try a bunch.  Of course, if you're a Scotch drinker, you know this as well.  There's as much variety in whiskeys as there is in wine or beer.)

Anyway many Bourbon lovers suggest Makers Mark as the ideal choice for someone who wants to experience a good bourbon (or even whiskey) for the first time; it's not too expensive, taste great, is very smooth, little to no burn.  If you're looking for one to try, I suggest that.  Of course, you still may not like it, but at least then you'll be disliking a proper bourbon, rather than mass-produced rubbing alcohol.

What if Elvin was female?

Well, well, I see that I am the first to vote for vodka...

First of all, I'll admit that I haven't really read the second half of the thread because it grew too fast, so my apologizes if I say something that's been said already.

To all those against drinking. From what I did read here it seems that many people think that if you drink you automatically get wasted. This couldn't be further from the truth. I have some experience in drinking and I've never been "wasted", I got quite seriously drunk a couple of times, but never to the point when I can't stand or have memory lapses or am doing something I am forced to apologize later on. But I still like to drink because the feeling it gives you before you hit the critical level is, well... liberating?

Now, how to cure hangovers... the easiest way is not to get to a point when you have them. I can count the times I had a hangover on the one hand. My 3 ground rules are:

1. NEVER drink on an empty stomach. If you go to a party and you're not sure if there'll be serious food there (i.e. meat or something as heavy) always eat before you go.
2. Never lower the percentage of what you drink (i.e. don't go for beer after vodka). More experienced people may know some mixes that are ok, but I'm not one of them.
3. And the most important one - know your limits. Someone mentioned drinking slowly - . Just take your time, you'll spend less money on alcohol that way and will always know when you've had enough.

I have also noticed people talking about different brands of vodka. I'm not much of an expert, I only tried some of the more popular/easily accessible stuff here, but from what I have tried I can single out 4 brands that I liked and divide them into 2 groups:

1. Best in terms of quality - Finlandia and Absolut, especially Absolut. Nothing went better than a bottle of frozen Absolut with some meat and pickles.
2. Best in terms of quality+price - Nemiroff and Hortitza. Good enough to drink and quite easy on your pocket.

And last, but not least... I've seen some people talk against mixing stuff with vodka, there's only one thing I can say to them:
I love you, guys.

there are people who drink to get wasted or at least it seems to me, some people just keep drinking and drinking until they can't hold their glass anymore. it's not very understandable

That's the point of "evil". It can't "advertise" somehow else cause no one would be interested in it anymore.

My experiences? Parties are overrated, boring as hell. Beer tastes bitter and smells of piss, makes you smell of vomit after a couple cans. The stupid, giggling, half-naked, half-drunk girls are the reason you dream of being gay. Vodka is plain horrible, burns your throat and makes you sleep with men while being straight. (no, this one isn't my experience - fortunately).

I hate alcohol. I dislike parties. I like clubs, though - for the music, relaxation - I'm not much of a dancer but the bass shaking my ribs is something what I really like. Also sentimental values - the good old eurodance, like Loft, Fun factory and other crappy bands that brought us joy in Poland when we were 10yo kids. But I tend to evacuate as soon as the place starts stinking of piss and there is vomit everywhere. And cheap sex in the toilet.

The best "party" I attended to? It was a long time ago. The guys got so drunk they threw the party host's tv out the window. Fifth floor. It was so abstract and funny, lol. I was the only sober guy there, btw.

There you go.
I like how straightforward you are because i can hardly speak out so easily (and somewhat aggressive -- not towards anyone though)
