Simply defined, a joke is too sick, morbid, racist, sexist or tasteless when it is not funny.

Mvass's joke was just bleh, bad taste. Maybe if you are in a laughing mood but even so..

I tend to walk on the edge when it comes to jokes. There are times when you want to make others laugh and times when you want to make yourself laugh, that is when jokes that frustrate others come in It can be funny if you see someone flustered over something widely accepted as less than harmless but the way in which it is told matters a lot. It must clearly be a joke or close enough to make him wonder for a split second bordering between rage and laughing And of course avoiding to make someone a 'usual target' or having only negative jokes in his expense. Takes a certain amount of intuition about where is the line but there is no universal line exactly because people's sense of humour is diverse.

What I generally avoid is of course racial humour in front of said people, that is plain rude. There are exceptions of course as long as there are laughs to be had and you know what people's reaction will be. Another is knowing when it is the time to make a joke. There are cases where a joke to lighten up in a sad situation is a welcome relief and cases that will make you look like an idiot or perhaps an insensitive jerk. Then there are the jokes that are simply gross and some values that are not meant to be ridiculed. If you are aiming to get a funny reaction out of them you don't have to make them disgusted..

About sensitive issues it is very important that the others see your intent. For instance take a look at this. You can tell that it's meant to be funny and does not of course promote beating seals with blunt objects.

The justifications are hilarious, can't take them seriously if you wanted to.

Did you know baby seals kill as many as 1 million defenseless fish every year?

The baby seals are saying some really nasty stuff about your mom. Whack them!

Weapon unlocked! Big and meaty - just like your mom. Hey the seals said that so go punish them.

You think my joke is lame, and then present those baby seal things?
Weak. Just weak.

Did you hear about the Chinese couple who had a retarded baby?
They named his Sum Ting Wong.

I have to agree that there are limits on jokes. Like the child who had cancer example. That was just sad and depressing.

It's like those old gross ones with "Mommy".

"Mommy, I don't LIKE Grampa."
"Shut up! You eat what is served!"

"Mommy, I don't want to America anymore."
"Shut up and swim on!"

"Mommy, can I go and play with Gramma?"
"Nope! The coffin stays closed today!"

"Mommy, my head's swimming."
"Keep cool, that's only pre-wash."

"Mommy, can I go out and swing with Grampa today?"
"No, they cut him off the tree today."
