Question for People from Small Countries

Small country = almost anywhere

What's it like living in a small country when it comes to keeping in touch with people? I'm assuming people aren't prone to move to a whole different country very often. Does this make it easy to keep in touch with old friends and whatnot since they're probably a max of 5 hours from where you live?

I hit a black hole of depression suddenly because I started cruising facebook, and so many people seem so far away. Life is so cruel. It makes me wish I was born way back in the day where people barely left their hometown. Maybe life was duller, but at least you didn't have to make friends with somebody just to have them be far far removed from you a couple years down the road. No wonder people are so thick-skinned; you have to be or else you'll be miserable. It's a mandatory defense mechanism anymore.

I've been having spouts of distress lately. I think I'm going through a crisis because it fully occurred to me that in the grand scheme of things, 2 seconds or 80 years left to live hardly makes a difference.  I feel like a single star in a massive universe, and it's too damn big for it's own good.

Things is that when someone lives like a one hour ride on the train (or three-four hours driving, if you will), you're still not going to meet up a lot. I mean, it's still a hell of a drive and you know, when you drop by it's definitely not a very casual occurence
But then again, I guess meeting up thrice a year is better than never...

5 hours? Not even Romania is that small, and most countries in Europe are (especially eastern ones).

Well, I think Belgium and the netherlands have that size approximately... The benelux as well, but otherwise, i dunno... You won't fnd maybe others, unless you count the vatican
Ireland seems pretty small as well, but my bet is that the country is not to be frequently traversed.

I want to start drinking to take my edge off. My usual mellowness is all melting away. I mean ****, I'm turning emo and I hate it, but I can't stop it.

I want to hit the reset button and be born in a remote village in Bhutan. I want to raise goats and not have a clue how to use a computer or a car. I want to be a stupid and ignorant hick that has almost no critical thinking skills. I hate my mind. I'd bet a huge sum of money that those people are happier than 9/10 of the people living in the "real world".

Calm down, blizzard. I think I know how it feels. Anyway, just relax and tell us what happened. Who moved away?

Everybody. I just realized that I'm not in touch with one person from high school, and I'm already not really talking with my college buddies much because time and space have separated us. I mean I knew it all along, but I was a retard and started looking through old yearbooks and then I cruised through facebook, and all the memories and emotions flooded back to me. Gosh, I need to stay away from memorabilia... those things are dreadful. I don't live within an hour of any of my old friends. I'm meeting new people at work and such, but man, what kind of life is it where you have to make new friends in so many stages of life? It's horrible. It's like building a bridge just to let it crumble.

I should just move to like... Luxembourg or Hong Kong or something.

"Hey man, where you living these days?"
"Uhh... i think I'm 20 minutes down the road"

That would be wonderful.

My dutch teacher said that that was what growing up is all about: letting things go to move on; but snow that! enough with modernist lessons!

I'm sorry to hear that. Well, of course, you can always try to look at it from the bright side, like corribus does apparently

Corribus speaks with wisdom.

Dating a girl from another town is kinda magical though. If she lives far away.

There is nothing better than a long ride in a train after successful date, mp3 player giving you the best of FF/MGS music, while you watch the sunset over the fields.

Priceless, I tell you!

Apparently. But was it the same way 600 years ago? Most people stayed in the same town their entire life. You could build friendships knowing that they would likely end only in death (or through a big fight).

Yes I know, there are countless disadvantages to that as well, and I'm looking at it through rose-colored glasses. It just seems really sweet to me right now and I wanted to anonymously vent. I'm a really emotional person but I put up an iron curtain most of the time, so I can't vomit my feelings out enough.

Second that, also in my opinion there is no better place to think how good your life is than a train.
