But what if its a cello or a bass? You then have to set it up, and tune it and all that, THEN do some serious stuff. With the trumpet, you can play a sad mexican song and make everyone go "OH NOEZ!!! ME VIVO ES MALO!!!"

That is the benefit of being able to choose your instrument. In other words, your person will be able to pick up any instrument and use their power with it. Then set that instrument down, pick up another (different one) and use their power with THAT ONE. 
Edit : It has to be a actual instrument however. You can't bang on Garbage Lids like you would a drum and the power work.

Ok, just want to make sure you know that if you use say a Trumpet, set it down for a Lute, you can then set the lute down and use the Trumpet again. No limit on which one you can use, or how often you can use it. Bigger = more powerful however.

The Situation (right now the characters do not know this, but they will find out, and writing it down before I forget).
2000 years have passed. Something happened (this will come out eventually) and the Federation, the IDP..and all ships or space stations were pretty much wiped out by a inter dimensional war. ((So even Troy's base is lost for now)). It took time, but people started to rebuild. All the races but humans were wiped out (or left the dimension/Trancended..whatever). Or at least as far as anybody can tell.
Even the Utopians and Rutopians have left (and their technology). With no current way to travel between dimensions, and no way of time traveling..it is going to take a small miracle to get back to your time/bodies.

Ok, according to my chart the choices for 1 are the following.
Magic (think Dr. Strange)..potent but needs time to do anything, very flexible with the time needed.
Cannonball - can roll up into a metal ball like an armadillo and bounce around. In 'ball' form it is very difficult to injure or hurt you.
Force Field Creation - Can create up to 3 10x10 forcefields (must be in 'square' form..so you couldn't trap somebody in them unless there is a wall or something on one side) and manipulate them (ie move them at will).
