Point System.....

I am not sure how much i like this point system...
I am high now after a week of good luck. So now people seem to headhunt me. I enter the zone and recieve like 10 zm's, that suxs.
And half the people if I would play they and win, I would recieve nutting for the win. But if I lose I give out a crazy cadet medal, and lose half my points.

Dont get me wrong I dont mind losing games(and the ten people that read this add me to their friends list), because I know it is unavoidable. All it takes is a lot of bad luck and a good opponent.

If I dont play just anyone that leaves just the colonels and high captains to play. Not much selection there, and the beauty of this tourney is lost. I can no longer go into the zone and find a game at anytime

I understand the idea behind the point system. Is to get games with people at ur own skill level. But if I only play people at my level, how will other people learn anything from us, colonels and captians, if we never play them??

I dont know how to solve these problems, but I think they need to be fixed.

I have been playing in other tournments cause of it, but most other tourneys require alot of work to set up games. And sometimes you get an opponent who has never played an online game b4

I believe the point system is to blame, or maybe there just arent enuff colonels out there this season.

I should prolly change the title of this thread to the rambling of someone with too much time on his hands cause he cant find a game when wants too.......

ramblings of a tired Canadian

yes u do have too much time if u took the time to think about that most caps/col concerned about points even urself... u dont wanna play a game in which u will win without effort but u dont wanna take the chance of playing a game where u might encounter somebody 10 times ur equal

Yes!!!

That is my point right there

points are an incentive
, but once you have em there is no incentive.
except maybe to lose so you can do it again......

Sigh maybe i should rejoin under a new handle, than it would be a longer climb up the ladder.

I am here to have fun, but playing people that are justing hunting for points is no fun. You know who u are

I liked Kerebero's idea about random maps, but that still doesnt fix the problems. And it didnt fly as the only people interested already play random maps all the time.

I dont know maybe toh is dieing.....
atleast my days there

Fun or Point Hungry?

Jex, I found it amusing that you made the comment that your play for fun and NOT just for points.  IN our last game we played you skipped half your stuff on your side of the closed map we were playing and came to attack me early week 3.  The game ended with me conceeding because I was not prepared for such an early attack.  Wow great fun, couple hours of time to build up just so I can say " I conceed "

You quicky took the easy points.  As you stated earlier I dont mind losing I lose alot   But playing in the manner in which you played our last game, you would fit the catagory of a point hungry easy win kinda guy not a player out to have a good time and have fun.

In the beginning of my TOH career I was one of those point hungry barbarians that would do almost anything for a win no matter how easy or cheap.  POINTS!!!!  But now I have nothing to prove, I am in the tournament to have fun and enjoy the game.  Sure I try to win the games, but I dont make a point try and rush as fast as possible to attack my opponent so as to catch him unprepared.   I really enjoy a good hard fought battle.  The battles are the fun part of this game.  I think thats why B@st@rds tourny is so popular cause USUALLY you can get a game based on Fun.  Rule #1 by the way.  Unfortunatly this game with Jex was the first b@st@rd game that didnt follow rule number 1.  Just same old cut throat win win win POints POints POints style.

Now I am rambling.    BTW  no offense to you personally Jex.  We just have 2 differnt outlooks on game and that is okay.  Very few people have my outlook on the game  ;^)

Peace and Have fun.

hehe nice replys

Lick King you seem to be quoting my view on h4
I think it is kind of broken, I dont have the solution. Just interested in other people's views on it.

Jinxer, I dont know what to say.... I guess I kind of play the way Mo plays, I do everything possible to get the win(except H&R). I have never really learned to go easy on someone, for this sorry. In my defence, I had done most of the big stuff in my area. Namely I backtracked from the middle, to do my utopia. I guess just dont understand how you play the game. Or maybe I have never understood the idea of not playing my best game everytime I play.. it is too bad you thought that I was rushing you for the points. I was rushing cause I wasnt going to get any stronger sticking around my area, so I went to end the game. It is unfortunate that you didnt keep pace with me and were so far behind that you had to concede. But that aint my fault...

No problem keeping pace...

I have no problem keeping pace.  LOL

I have my good games and bad games.

BTW  I can't figure out why you are having such hard time finding games, you are so fun to play with.  Besides most people prolly couldnt keep up with you anyways.

Anyways back to the point of this thread,  the point system has been this way since season one and the tourny continues to grow.  Seems to be working perfectly fine.  I say if it aint broke dont fix it.

BTW, peace Jex, my opinion on our game got taken a bit to serious by you I believe.  It is just a game.  I did learn something though.  Must play a closed map as if it were open.

The system is the most forgiving one I have ever seen.

Just by winning 2 out of 3 you can climb to 1500 just from playing a lot.

The system is designed to encourage play and that's fine. If it were a chess system it would not be 30 for a win 20 for a loss. It would be 20 for a win, 20 for a loss and then players would have to beat players of their own skill level to advance and not players who have played more games and therefor have more points.

I accept the system because it causes people to play a lot and overall that is good for the game.

I am sure that when you were 1000 you liked the idea of getting all these points for each win and now it is your turn to be headhunted. This is going to happen with any system.

I am about to create a thread touching on that topic. I will just call it "Headhunting"
because there are some other issues that need to be addressed also in regards to the zone.

But anyway all point systems level out eventually. On this one 1600 is the level out. 1300 is cake, you get there just by playing a lot. Then you actually have to play people ranked within 200 pts of you and as you go up the play gets better of course.

Good Point Mocara,

You are correct Mocara.  Anyone who has all day and all night to play can raise in ranks very easily.  That is the only aspect of the points system that is a glitch so to speak.  I do also agree with Jex in the fact that after you get so high you are restricted in who you can play becasue you will win nothing for your time if your opponet is to low.  BUT if the system awarded lets say 10 points for every win atleast no matter how big the difference in score...you would have people horribly abusing that.  You would have Capt playing cadets all the time and climbing 10 points at a shot, with a 30-0 record.  Anytime there is a weakness in any game or system people find it and will exploit it.

But back to your point Mocara, most of TOH and its subtournies are geared for the addict.  For the person with tons of time to play.  Almost every tournamnet that is setup now has an Addicts style set up.  Basically the people who have no family or Job and playes 24-7 have better chance to advance.  And in most of the addicts style you get points for losing  LOL  so they dont even have to win a single game and can still accumulate alot of points just by rampaging thru lots of games.  I would like to see lots more tournaments with a bracketed matchup.  Scheduled games, you play your guy if you win you move on to the next match up.  After all ther are alot of people in TOH that play that can only play a couple games a week.

Anyways mocara thanks for pointing out that I need to win 2/3 to advance I have been trading wins and losses lately and not really gaining any ground.

Oh BTW  MadUnicorn, Just proud of my accomplishements.  If you got it flont it

This is sick sick sick, these people who have nothing better to do than play heros all the time unlike us people who have to work all day and have a hard time fitting in a couple games a week

The point system is great.
I am sure most of you know it was taken from the chess points system.
And the chess system works great for millions of players.  There are very few viable alternatives IMO.

1 other thing... Isn't that the goal of a ranking system anyway? to establish who is the best through good or bad luck who can win regardless of what hand they are dealt ?

crazy idea ...

Maybe this idea really sucks, haven't really thought about it too much, but I figure I will throw it out there to see what you guys think about it.

How about some maps that are unbalanced purposefully, so that if you take the weaker side you can be considered to be playing at some point disadvantage.  Then a high ranked player should be able to play a lower ranked one, still have a reasonably close game (hopefully) and get some points if they win and not lose a million if they lose.

Just a thought, any comments?

Perverted Daemon Cave

In Oracle we used to have the Daemon Cave where all the towns on the map would be of the saem type to represent whatever Lord was defending that map.

Maybe something like that would be a spinoff of Greiger's idea. Make the higher ranked player take fortress and get a special swamp lord bonus if you win the game.

I'd be into that. Some cadet says "Wanna play?" I can say "Let me guess..you want Solmyr? Fine I'll take fortress and do a Swamp Lord challenge and get bonus points for my having to come from behind to win the game.

That'd be cool. Good idea Greiger.

P.S. Vesuvius has been saying "Honor above all else" since I got my first email from him 4 years ago so I think it is just coincidence.
