Windows 7

Has anyone upgraded?  What do you think?

Which version do you have?
Do you run 64 bit or 32 bit?

Vista until we finish developing a large  system at work and then itīs all XP SP3 baby!

BTW Vista was suicide, like running towards an Azure Dragon...now Windows 7 is falling again...seems stupid to me.

I've avoided Vista successfully, until I bought a new Notebook last month with automatic upgrade option once Windows 7 is available to the producer for upgrade. Which sadly isn't the case at this point. It may happen every day, though.
I'm running Vista 64bit and will upgrade to 7 64bit as soon as possible. Vista is even worse than I thought, although it has to be said it's booting a lot faster than XP.
I'll keep you posted.
I'm pretty sure that 7 will beat every Windows since 98 to hell, but of course I could be wrong.

A question from the computer-ignorant. I often see the more "informed" people here on the forums going on about how Windows is a terrible system, or how System X has such gigantic flaws etc etc. Now I'd like to know whether they're nagging on a very high level or are you usually debating fundamental things that should actually concern  a normal person who only uses his PC to work, surf and game a little?

Half of the time I have no idea what you are talking about but I'd like to know whether I should care (not because I think you're talking crap but because I'd like to know whether your concerns are basic or just fine tuning stuff).

I know Vista sucks.  My two year old computer with Vista runs like a Dinosaur.  I have heard good things about Windows 7 (actually, quite excellent things, such as that its the best MS OS in years, if not ever).  I wanted to know if anyone here has upgraded, and what their experiences are.

For those uses what can 7 do more than XP anyway?

And sorry no clue, don't plan to get it for quite some time. I'll switch to XP 64-bit sooner than 7 I guess, but the problem is that 64-bit makes me reluctant to switch, not the OS, due to compatibility problems...

BTW: I know assembly language and processor architecture, at least to a high-level. I know they could have avoided the 64-bit mess by simply using segments instead. Alas, this didn't happen, because everyone is like "OMG EVIL SEGMENTS!!!" when they would NOT require a new "processor mode", just adding more segments (all older apps would use segment 0 by default, for instance).

Yes, it's harder to use segments than completely flat address space, BUT how many apps actually use more than 4GB for a given task, a continuous block of memory (for multiple tasks it's a breeze)? LOL that's NOT an excuse.

****!

@Azagal's earlier post
Ok, here's how it really is. An OS is a VERY big thing to program, with a lot of advanced things. It's impossible (practicly) to make a flawless OS, without skipping a lot of stuff. I agree that XP (and other MS OS:s) are flawed, with low performance and security.
It's simply popular because it's popular and familiar. The only good thing (if being objective) is that it's compatible with most software and I've never seen a major game not supporting any MS OS.
And about vista, it was a HUGE mistake. It doesn't do anything better than XP, except looking better, and drains HUGE amounts of performance. So for a regular, "non-geek", user, it's ok as long you avoid vista.
That said, I do use XP, even though both MAC and Linux are "better".

As for W7? I'm thinking about intsalling it on my school computer. All in favour?

Could someone run down the advantages and disadvantages of 32bit vs. 64bit?  For example, why would I not install the 64bit version?  After all, bigger number is better, no?

Depends on your RAM. 32bit stalls at 3 Gigs Ram - it's like Dos and the 640k problem.

The interesting thing is now, that with more than 3 gigs RAM you'd expect a machine come equipped with a 64bit system, now, would you?
Yeah, so did I, but little do we know.

So. If you want to make use of all those Gigabytes of Ram, you must use a 64bit system anyway.

My computer has 2GB right now.  If I bump it up to 4GB, I should install 64bit version then?

Yup, because the bump would be 50% effective only with 32bit system.

And since I'm running 32bit vista, as I understand it to upgrade to 64bit W7, I have to do a clean installation (reformat), correct?

Are there any downsides to upgrading to 64bit?

Application Compatibility, or rather, compatibility with 32-bit applications.

Well...

...there's the PAE (Page Address Extension) way to do it on 32-bits as well up to 64GB of RAM, but only for different apps (1 app can only access max 3GB and that's with a special switch for boot.ini). Unfortunately Windows XP does not support this, but Windows Server 2003 (next in line) does. Linux also does of course.

How's with compatibility?

Will older games run well on win7? Diablo II, for instance. Or Baldur's gate, or fallout... I like to return to those from time to time...

I heard Diablo1  doesn't work. Shame. I love The Dark mod.

I have a copy of win7 in my drawer and I can't decide whether to install it or not... >_>

Far as I know, as a general rule, anything that runs on Vista will run far better on 7. Some stuff from before XP often gives occasional slowdowns, though.
