Oh, and just looking there, you have 9 creatures for Fortress, but only 7 for Necro.
Oh, and no I don't agree with that OhforfSake, it's an intriguing thought, but it'd go against established conventions for the HoMM series. It might work for another game though (Nations of Might and Magic, or Cities?)

No, try again (we already have 'expansion' packs for other games, having a game 'called' Expansion isn't going to work).

Yeah, it is true heroes of might and magic stands for something special, recognizeable. However, I'd really like the newer games to be more than graphics improvement and added creatures and towns.
I find this game enjoyable because of the strategical aspect and that it is damn cool when monsters are figthing, as I really like to see what monsters is strongest.
However that should not mean that we should limit ourself, I understand the worry, and if anything, I'd suggest that developers made public tests/demos available to see how well different stuff works and getting the arguments of the community, before any real release. That way we'd know if it is something that really doesn't work for most of us, then the developers would be informed, and we wouldn't have to fear change nearly as much as it is my impression we do. After all, we can't know how well it works before we've tried it. (I know of several features of HoMMV that I'd have found extremely disgusting, which is not the case).
Anyhow, yes it may be smarter to use that stuff in entirely other, heroes inspired, games.

COMPROMISE is the solution.
When people say suggestions with 14 factions are too many (I agree), but arguing that in order to keep balance, 5 factions is a maximum (WHAT?! this is one less than HOMM2 back in 1997 ). HOMM3 and HOMM5 had 9 and 8 factions, respectively, and they were the most positively received ones (of course all HOMMs are great in their own right) You have to agree with me that 8 or 9 factions is a good number that satisfies BOTH, people concerned about balance, and people praising and wanting a variety of creatures and themes(like me ) So, here is my prediction/suggestion for factions that will appear in H6:
HAVEN - Lineup already known
NECROPOLIS - Lineup already known
INFERNO - Lineup already known
ATLANTIS/NAGA(or some other new faction) -
CORE: Murloc, Sea Serpent(Coatl), Basilisk
ELITE: Mermaid, Naga, Myrmidon
CHAMPION: Sea Monster/Leviathan
SYLVAN -
CORE: Sprite, Elven Archer, Wolf
ELITE: Druid, Unicorn, Treant
CHAMPION: Faerie Dragon OR Phoenix
ACADEMY -
CORE: Gremlin OR Halfling, Gargoyle, Golem
ELITE: Mage, Djinn, Rakshasa Raja
CHAMPION: Titan
DUNGEON -
CORE: Troglodyte, Harpy, Beholder
ELITE: Medusa, Minotaur, Manticore(I know about Lamassu, but this could be the classic Manticore with an actual Lion face )
CHAMPION: Black Dragon
STRONGHOLD -
CORE: Berserker(H4, because Goblins are just too weak), Centaur OR Orc, Nomad
ELITE: Shaman, Troll OR Ogre, Roc(Thunderbird)
CHAMPION: Cyclops OR Behemoth
FORTRESS(H3) -
CORE: Gnoll, Lizardman, Serpent Fly
ELITE: Basilisk, Gorgon, Wyvern
CHAMPION: Hydra
I would love for these factions to appear in H6, and I assure you, the balance wouldn't be disturbed. Even at least one more faction could be introduced, as some great creatures (e.g. Efreet, Nightmare, Devil, Bone Dragon, Death Knight, Dwarf(at least the classic one), Mummy etc. are still missing. And even in the factions above, I couldn't choose between e.g. Phoenix and Faerie Dragon. I know, they can be made neutrals, and I hope at LEAST that will happen - though personally, I hate the fact that some awesome units, like the Phoenix, have been made unrecruitable) What do you think?

Quote: wolves... probably not, wolves more fall into the Haven faction...
hypnotism, yes.
Semi-agree.
Even in Haven I wont see them fit. You know wolves are "abominations" and "demonic". They are very agressive and they are totally EVIL!
/sarcasm.
But seriously as religious as Haven is I think they find the more "peaceful" Griffins more appropriate.
Wolves, Wargs, Werewolves all fits BOTH to some kind of Elven nature faction or Barbarian faction (orc or not).

@Bixie I agree that it is better to have fewer unique factions and creatures, then more similar factions and creatures, but I think that the best number for factions is 8 and the number for creatures in each faction is 7, and 5 to 10 neutral creatures.
About your factions, when I red their stories I found this similarity:
Palace - The Empire from Warhammer
Academy - Techpriests Enginseers from Mars
Haven - Tyranids
Fortress - Orks form Warhammer
Necropolis - Necron
But thats just probably how it seemed to me
@Ohforfsake I think that since the developers want to earn some money on their games they have to make sure to keep enough to satisfly the long time fans and yet to add enough to satisfy the new fans and make the game more fun to play and not boring. So the best changes to make are the mechanics, graphics, features, things that fans have complained about earlier... and the things to keep are gameplay, lore type, creatures and heroes type, music type, things that fans have praised...
Here is my opinion:
1. Haven: Humans + creatures allied with Light
2. Preserve: Elves + creatures allied with Nature
3. Fortress: Dwarves + creatures allied with Mechanics, Fire, Snow
4. Stronghold: Orcs + creatures allied with Might
5. Academy: Humans + creatures allied with Magic, Mechanics
6. Dungeon: Shadows + creatures allied with Darkness
7. Inferno: Demons
8. Necropolis: Undead

In my opinion, 5 factions at launch is fine, as long as the first expansion has at least 2 towns.
If we have Haven, Inferno, Necro, a jungle town, and Stronghold/Sylvan at launch, I'd like to see Dungeon and Sylvan/Stronghold in the first expansion. 7+ towns is a minimum for final amount of towns.
