I'm somewhat disappointed by the structure of the storyline.

rough shoddy Spoilers

Zeratul - You must keep the queen of blades alive

Raynor - Ok

(a few missions later)

Valerian - Hey raynor, wanna make the queen of blades a human again?

Raynor - Sure do i ever.

What was wrong with a linear storyline?

Ridiculous stuff like this has been popping up throughout the campaign.

Horner - Watch out for tosh, one wrong move and his knife will be in your back.

Me - ...

edit : the former makes slightly more sense if you finish the story.

Since Blizzard stated that Kerrigan will be the main character in the Zerg expansion Heart of the Swarm, I asume she will contiune to control the zerg. Maybe what happened to her made her lose some control over the Zerg and Dr. Narud/Duran starts to take over it for the Dark voice but that would be an excellent opportunity for the campaign, where Kerrigan would start to reasemble the zerg under her control again but this time she is "good" (though I would not be suprised if she would betray Raynor again, Blizzard are not known for making happy endings in the Starcraft universe).

Blizzard isn't really known for story telling.  Hell, their 3 main series can be summed up with:  Good guy is corrupted by evil and other good guys have to go fight him or her now.

I would say Blizzard is famous for making "ok" stories feel like epic ones.

They might not be best examples of literal art, but under Blizzard's hood they all feel awesome.

I don't know about that, I would say Warcraft III at least had a passable storyline at worst, which is why the Starcraft II plot is utterly disappointing:

"Prophecy this, prophecy that, great hungerererererer, my Power Ranger suit will kill me, cue duel set to O Fortuna soundtrack, I'll kill you with my bare hands, FALLEN ONE, I can give you what you've always wanted, blah blah blah, eat lead partner."

I don't mean to rant and rave, but after a decade you would hope the ending should not resemble bad fanfiction and completely betray the first game.

I wouldn't even say they are famous for OK stories.  I'd say they are famous for incredibly polished, addictive games with great online capabilities, completely unoriginal source material and ideas(or stolen if you want to go that route),throw away stories and characters, that take 10 years to come out.

Well, the Warcraft universe has some of the largest lore of all the fantasy universes and several books with more ones being released soon (The Shattering, Prelude to Cataclysm aswell as several mangas and graphic novels that are coming such as Curse of the Worgen and the Horde series).
But then, most of the lore does not come from the books and with Cataclysm being WoW 2, it will contiune to expand. Sorry for turning this into a Warcraft thread.

I think Wings of Liberty could be more epic if they threw out some of those mercenary missions (seriously, half the campaign was "Help out X mercenary and gain credits") and had more missions such as the ones in the Zeratul campaign.

Anybody got any good ideas for the last mission?

I'm kinda stuck. I've tried both airforce free and nydus worm free version. Both end me hitting the popcap and getting utterly overpowered and brutally slaughtered. Usually after Sarah has taken out half of my defenses but not always. I've gotten 60% of the way with the air free version and 85% with the nydus free version. Should I try to take on one of the side bases with an airforce in the airfree version? If I could pull the resources for that it is. I tend to run out of resources too. Two vespene geysers too little and 12 mineral fields too little. Any suggestions are welcome.

I went for the "without air support zerg" opponent. Had like 6-7 battlecruisers controling the nydus worms and Kerrigan whenever they are up, while siege tanks+marines took care of ground defenses

Lulz, I jsut realised the nydus worms spawn outside of my base too. *major facepalm*

No wonder I was getting owned by the sheer amount of troops around 50%.
Leaving all those nydus worms out there undisturbed creates quite a mass of zerg.
Yeah, ten banshees for nydus. Five bunkers plus sieges behind. Use marines to kill Sarah just after pulse. Easy pickings. No loads needed.

Did you mean to get the collectors edition? i didn't...

Sucks that it cost 40 extra dollars. but i suppose i'll make the best of it.

The last mission i found to be quite difficult.

But having banshees patrolling around for nydus worms and not having to worry about airforce really helped me. just needed a mass of marines to absorb the impact of kerrigan and protect my perdition turrets and siege tanks.

But i played on normal. on hard i got crushed (i didn't know that nydus worms spawned outside my base)

The Battlecruisers are awesome on the last mission without air. The Yamato Cannon oneshots the Nydus Worms and deals great damage to Kerrigan.
I thought the last mission was really fun and cool and it had a good difficulty level too.

And if you choosed the Automated Refineries research you wont need to worry about SCVs working on gas. ^^

Also, I have heard the Thors can stun Kerrigan. ^^
I spammed Perdition Turrets aswell and I never run out of rescoures, but I choosed Orbital Command instead of Planetary Fortress.

Automated refineries were indeed awesome.

I didn't want to produce battlecruisers because i wanted the job blasting those nydi done fast and efficiently.

Tech reactors were far superior though.

I played on brutal naturally.

Battlecruisers are useless. The yamato is nice against Sarah but since she oneshots theme even from that range it's not worth it. And as Mamga said, they are too slow against the Nydus worms. Killing six Nyduses even with two banshee squads flying around takes some time. Doing the same with BCs would end up in another 18 having surfaced by the time you get those original six dead.

You don't really need anything else than banshees and siege tanks. Siege tanks take care of the attacks and banshees kill nyduses and Sarah. In the end I didn't even have anyone in the bunkers. Using the same population for more tanks and banshees is better.

Perdition turrets are good for defending the platform in the end when it gets flooded with nyduses but otherwise they're pretty much useless. I just spammed them because I had hit the popcap.

Oh and the psi disruptor OWNZ! Building a few of those in front of your tanks really helps them out. Just watch the maggots squirm!

I used double SCV production and it saved my ass a few times. Only mission where I regretted not having automated refineries was the last. I could have used that 9 population. But the headstart the double SCV production gives in minerals is just way too big on other maps and when you have to take 4~8 SCVs to repair your defenses quickly.

Another thing that was a big help in some maps was the armor tech that gave health too. Battlecruisers with 15% more health, THANK YOU! But again, in the last map I could have really used that 15% more damage since Sarah was the only killin anything...

Planetary fortress would have been pretty good with blocking the way, I think, and some good for taking out stray zerglings but otherwise pretty useless. Not that perdition turrets were any more usefull.

The six-slot bunkers rule though. With all upgrades they're pretty nifty. I don't see what good the guns are, their damage is pathetic.

I used regenerative armour but I knew that was a poor choice right after I chose it if I ever got useful spellcasters. And surprise surprise, I had to wait till battlecruisers to get any spellcaster worth of anything. Being able to shoot two yamato cannons/missile storms would have been nice. Otherwise useless.

I regret not choosing spellcaster augmentation too.

I prefered the gun on the bunkers because i didn't realize that there were other defensive towers. So i spammed bunkers way early to use up extra minerals (before perdition) i probably would've preferred the extra health in retrospect.

I also picked the hivemind emulator which was really weird.

I used it for the first two missions on char but on the last mission ultralisks and anything above a hydra basically disappeared >.> . I'm not going to micro and steal a bunch of hydras when i can blast them to smithereens. Perhaps on a harder difficulty.

Too bad kerrigan had this imba detection. She could attack stealthed units as if they weren't stealthed.

Well i guess that's a good thing. I would've spammed spectres to block kerrigan.

I also played my first custom game and i got disconnected from battle.net.

I don't like how it retails at $10 more than the average PC game.  What because it's Starcraft you get to charge more?  Pffft.  I'll pick it up when it's in the discount bin.

No see the problem is that computer games have cost $50 for.. well, forever.  Now Blizzard comes along and says, "Hey look, we're super special and we can charge 17% more for a game just because we know that the suckers will pay for it."  And other companies see that people will pay 60 bucks for agame instead of 50 and before long every game is 60 bucks.
