im just looking to add some things to some of the maps in the way of extra goodies, like mines or buildings that let you recruit more troops, is there any way to do that?

Yes it is possible. I wrote a post two years ago on editing campaigns and you are the first person who is interested.
1. download the files for the campaign scenarios(no dialogue scenes) from here http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/original_maps.shtml . Don't worry the dialogue will still show up.
2. extract the individual .h5m files to your maps folder. do not extract the maps themselves
3. use the editor to edit the maps as you see fit. do NOT change the name of the map.
4.use winrar to unpack the campaigns folder from the data file and extract to the usermods folder. go to usermods and change the read only status of the folder.
5. open up the campaign file for whatever campaign the map was in that you edited. for example C1.xdb for isabell's campaign. the first few lines should look like this
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Campaign ObjectRecordID="1000011">
<InternalName>C1</InternalName>
<NameFileRef href="C1/Name.txt"/>
<FullNameFileRef href="C1/FullName.txt"/>
<NameCommentFileRef href="C1/NameComment.txt"/>
<DependentCampaigns/>
<DependentCampaigns>
<DependentCampaigns/>
<Missions>
<Item>
<NameFileRef href="C1/C1M1/Name.txt"/>
<NameCommentFileRef href="C1/C1M1/NameComment.txt"/>
leave this stuff alone. the next line is very important
<MissionTag href="/Maps/Scenario/C1M1/map-tag.xdb#xpointer(/AdvMapDescTag)"/>
this is where the campaign file will look for your usermap.
change the word Scenario to SingleMissions.
<MissionTag href="/Maps/SingleMissions/C1M1/map-tag.xdb#xpointer(/AdvMapDescTag)"/>
6. Repack the campaign folder using winrar as storage under zip format with a .pak ending
The campaign will now look for your edited map instead of the old one.
hope this helps. let me know if you have questions.

so im using this as a test for what i have done, i did put the maps in the maps folder just to edit them, i can move them later.
but, in the Campaigns folders for the mission in question, there are 2 files, using C1, the very first mission as an example, i have a file called "Name" and one called "NameComment" what one do i want and what does the other one do?
