Maybe Naga used to live in the Jade Ocean during the events of Heroes VI and something happens and they have to move to Karthal where they might live around the events in Heroes V.

The first naga pics shown some time ago(years) showed them to be turkish and Karthal matched nicely but now the naga look far eastern and they live in islands (Japan like).

That's Indian,not Turkish,as nagas are Indian myth creatures.

Looking at my map up close at Karthal, I first got the impression that it kinda looked like hellenistic Alexandria. Especially with the lighthouse tower-thing in the front. Then it reminded me a bit of a maquett Rhodes I saw once. But it strikes me as weird, because I seem to remember that hellenistic architecture is more angular, so I may be wrong. Perhpas this will help the discussion along.
As a lorehound, Karthal has fascinated me. It has not been mentioned in other places than the map, I seem to recall. So I am very curious as to what it realy is. Cepheus also knows something and he knows that he can tantalise lorehounds, like me, with such hints.

Hint : Heroes 3
Elemental town, at the base of nearby mountains and, both sides of a river.
Arabic style Town Hall and Castle with a high towered Mage Guild.
River leads South to the Ocean.
Water elemental can be upgraded into an Ice Elemental(both shooters).
Why not having the above mentioned town with Ashan's elemental creatures + a Naga Empress as ruler of such town in the early days of Ashan. Making the Nagas as their main, very powerful warrior/soldier of their time, place and, Queendom.

Hells no, Conflux was a bodge-together town they made up practically on the spot to replace the Forge. You can tell, because only the Elementalists were any good, the Planeswalkers were a bunch of upgraded elementals.

It does look like that, but isn't H6 supposed to be featuring something 'Chinese'? Didn't one of the composers confirm that?

I cannot recall reading such a thing, but the general concensus is that the Naga are likely to be inspired by the far east. But Karthal is on the west-coast and the Naga are from the Jade Ocean which lies east of Heresh and south of Stonehelm. So Karthall has likely little to do with the Naga.
But let us recap what general inspirations lie at the basis of the factions we know. I will try to give a compact inspiration, but I'll likely leave out many details. The focus will lie mostly on architecture.
1 Haven: Is inspired by medieval (Westen)Europe, angelic and catholic themes.
2 Inferno: Is inspired by the Ruins of Roman empire, fire and destruction themes.
3 Necropolis: Is inspired by Gothic(revival) and if the concepts we've seen so far the Ancient Near-east(Egypt/Mesopotamia), themes are death/darkness and symetry/order.
4 Academy: Is inspired by the Middle East(Arabia/1001 Nights), themes are magic and air.
5 Dungeon: Is inspired by Italian Barroque, themes are Shadow/Darkness and splendor/magic.
6 Sylvan: Is inspired by Celtic and Native American, themes are plants/nature and harmony
7 Fortress: Is hard to define, but it seems plain/stone industrial (Building high and angular) combined with heavy fortification, themes here are fire and industry perhaps.
8 Stronghold: Is inspired by nomadic/Mongolian tribesmen, themes seem to be haphazzard/semipermanent buildings and expressing might. This os also harder to define.
9 Nagas/Sanctuary: As no offical name is given yet and we've seen very little. However what we've seen indicates that they are inspired by Imperial/Shogun Japan and/or India.
If I am right in my assumption that Karthal is Hellenistic, than that might mean that the last 10th unknown faction could be hellenistically inpsired

My thoughts:
Nagas are creations of the Dragon of Water so I presume the Naga faction has to do much with water and probably sailing, so I don't see much ridiculousness in having colonies in the Eastern corner (islands) and the Western shoreline. (Karthal) Just like ancient Phoenicians did it. (not to mention Karthago again)
Karthal certainly has a harbor and is relatively close to the Griffin Empire. The latter is necessary to introduce Nagas in the core of HOMM6. (about Griffin dynasty)
The only confusing thing is the Chinese/Indian hint because Karthal doesn't have a Chinese type of design, nor Indian (if there are specific themes for India)
P.S. I guess Fortress is mainly based on Scandinavian/Icelandic culture, with Runes, closeness of lava. Only Edda epics are missing

I see, still that only enforces the idea that the Naga will make an apearance in HoMMVI and that they will be Far-Eastern themed.
However Karthal does not look Far-Eastern at all. So it is ever more doubtfull that Karthal has anything to do with the Naga.
I'm holding to my notion that it looks Helenistic and that it is likely a city governed by the 10th mystery faction. Untill I see compelling evidence obviously.
