Then where you learn it at the age of seven? From your parents, who work 5 days/week? A teacher is naturally formed to teach that, at least he should be. I have a very positive souvenir from my school classes: my teachers were exceptionally gifted and patient, but maybe that's only me. I would never cheat with them, it was a matter of mutual respect (yeah, it sound as from a nice book, but this is how it should work in the better of worlds)

Don't forget that the teacher responsibility was seriously tweaked around the world those last decades. Parents decided that their kid is the king and the teacher the slave. Any disciplinary decision taken by teachers today is highly contested and they eventually get even punished. Respect was lost and kids grow like savages. I am a teacher and I am shocked how indolent the youngsters became. They should listen first and talk later, when they will have something to say. Now they talk longtime before listening, and our task is impossible.

I never cheated before to my memory, simply because it's not a path that I have ever given serious consideration to nor did I consider it necessary, although I did cruise through college often using tools such as Sparknotes rather than fully divulging in the material, and I would consider that within the same fold as cheating. My reasons were quite obvious and straightforward: I wanted more play time and less work time. I don't deceive myself with false justifications for taking shortcuts; I shouldn't have done it but I wanted to do it, so I did it, and it felt good. It's quite similar to indulging in a large slab of bacon.

The statement "everybody does it" is a load of ****. Although I'm not sure I would call it rare, it isn't by any stretch a norm either.

Then again, considering one of the primary objectives of cheating is to not get caught in the process, it's obviously difficult to get solid data on that sort of thing , although from my anecdotal experiences of going through college I didn't get the impression that cheating was a common practice.

No, I did not cheat in school.

I think cheating is an indication of a person't work ethic. If they are unwilling to "work" to learn what is required of them they will likely be poor workers in whatever field they enter. They justify that for some reason the rules don't apply to them which could also be an indication of another attitude that will make them a poor employee.

I don't recall ever cheating outright back in grade school.  I'd occasionally resort to some hasty online research if I didn't have enough time to read several chapters, but I don't remember doing it that often.  In fact, I rarely found cliffnotes for my books.  Most of my time was spent doing the work myself.

As far as cheating on tests, I never had the gall to attempt it.  I suppose I was tempted many times to do so (especially if I didn't study very hard), but I've always feared the consequences.  Once during 9th grade, my English teacher caught me doing homework for another class in the middle of his lesson.  That was embarrassing enough, so you can imagine how awful I'd have felt to have been caught cheating on a test.

Right now, I'm even more steadfastly against cheating in academics.  I feel it isn't the right thing to do, and it wouldn't sit well with me even if my dishonesty yielded an A+.  Moreover, I feel more accomplished and satisfied by doing true, honest work.  Anyone can cheat and get away with good marks if they're sneaky, but how admirable would that be?  There's a moral lesson here that extends to much of our lives beyond the classroom.

This summer, I was suspected of cheating whilst taking an online course.  What followed was an uneasy few weeks of communication with my professor, who was very suspicious of people who achieved several perfect scores in a row.  I defended myself, saying that I'd never risk jeopardizing my long academic career by resorting to cheating.  He quickly relented, and I proceeded to do well, but it certainly wasn't a pleasant month for me.

And how a young pupil can know if a teacher is "bad" or "good"? Most will say X is cool because he is friendly and does not give homework. They will say Y is a jerk because he gives a lot of homework and penalize the laziness. As always, listening to the mass opinion is unproductive at long term because it depends on personal tastes.

The kinda bad teacher I'm talking about is the kind that only offers help to girls so he can peek down their blouses, make tests that are barely related to the studies at all, calls the class and tells them that he's taking the day off because he only has one lesson that day and wants a sleep-in, talks **** about other students during student-teacher-conferences, and finishes off the whole ****ing chaos by telling the score of all students in front of the class and always starting with the lowest scores.

That was my psychology teacher. That's my favourite subject and he ruined it completely.

Normally such person either will end in jail for sexual harassment or will simply lose his job for repeated absences. Maybe he was a cheater himself?

I did not know that you can peek a girl down blouse by helping her, I have to try that!

He was in fact. He has an identical twin and he loved telling stories about how they could use their appearances to study less.

He also told a girl in my class that he once had sex with his brother's girlfriend without her noticing anything. That's basically rape.

Kinda hard to tell the truth from the bull**** so I decided that everything was the latter.

Thing is with these kinda teachers... if you give 'em to much of a hard time they might you a low grade so most people will not bother risking it.

I had a hell of a talk with him when he wanted to discuss my grade though... gave me a higher grade than I deserved to make me shut up

Umm, no, that's not rape, that's the joy of having an identical twin. I can't recall how many times I heard this story, it is a common thing between twins, females as well.

I've never cheated on an exam, but I have cheated with other things, like essays, though. It's about attitude towards the school for me. School is, supposed,  to be about learning and if I get an assignment that I won't learn from, then I tell that to the teacher and simply don't do it( unless it's one of them teachers who fails you for one missing assignment, in which case I, cheat or do it halfheartedly).
That also leads me to the bad teachers. Some are bad and some are not. I base that on whether the teacher
a) possesses enough knowledge about the given subject
b) can motivate the students
c) can teach, not just present information( this includes how he forms tests and assignments, as well as how he acts in a classroom.
d) how he grades people. Some teacher grades on tests, behaviour in class( how many questions you answer and discussion you participate in), personal opinion( includes prejudice) and some very few that grades knowledge and ability( which requires plenty of insight)

Teachers who are good- no! good enough on these things will have no trouble whatsoever keeping order, in class!

I cheated a lot, and indeed everybody cheats here, at least 80% in all colleges, universities. Furthermore often those other 20% are usually considered supernerds, and become objects for laughing at. Personally I don't think that is right, but at the same time I don't feel cheating is a big problem.
At least a person is the only one who decides what is important for him and what is not. There is absolutely no want to study hard, when you know the material is useless and you are sure there is bypass way to pass exam. It's much better to spend this time with more use.
And yes, seems cheating is cultural issue. Even here geographical factor is obvious.

This attitude, IMHO, is capital later in real life, not the 949043460 rail types. Cheating is lowering your natural defense and becomes a natural way of life later.

Sure, writing those rail types on a piece of paper instead of learning them by rote will affect my later life in any way

I'm not the follow-the-orders-blindly type of guy. If someone says I should learn useless, outdated stuff by rote just because he has a whim that his students know those, I say: screw him. If the order is stupid, I will not follow.

Cunning is natural for people and a great way to maximize your benefits. If it doesn't hurt anyone, I don't see how this action may be frowned upon. ESPECIALLY if it's just meant to avoid an entirely pointless task. Why? Because I will forget those rail types a month later, making hours spent on memorizing them a complete waste.

There are better things to do for me that to waste hours for a painfully boring task that will give me absolutely no benefit at all.

I never cheated in high school.  It was too easy.

To my chagrin I did cheat once in college.  I should preface that be saying that my college had an Honor Code that was taken very seriously.  Examinations were not supervised, and were often take home, where it was upon our honor not to cheat.  To be honest, I think the system worked very well and there was very little cheating despite the fact that people could easily have done so.

Anyway, on this occasion I was taking a test in my dormatory and I couldn't resist the temptation to look up an answer in my textbook.  I was a freshman and the difficulty of college was new to me, and the pressure to succeed was great.  I hadn't studied much because that was my habit from high school.

So yeah, I cheated once.  But I felt so guilty about it afterwords that I never did it again.

If I were a hiring manager for a business I'd never hire a compulsive cheater.  I think it speaks to character.  Yes, there might be an element of culture to it, but to my mind someone who is willing to violate the rules for their personal gain in college is equally likely to violate the rules for personal gain elsewhere.  Cheaters in college are more likely to become thieves than non-cheaters.  Aren't they?

Agreed but that's not quite the same as in Doomforge's case. Or mine for that matter. Also there's the matter of cheating being practiced on a consistent basis, if not it doesn't necessarily say anything about the individual.

Looking at DF's case I see a person who isn't willing to do something he doesn't want to. I wouldn't hire a person like that. Everyone is bound to come across something he finds pointless and not worth it. Would I want a person who will just try to get away with as easy as possible or a person who will do it right?

That's one way to look at it but maybe you didn't have something equally useless to study yet? I know I had and I know I have badly wasted my time on it. Because frankly? Some books are written to fill empty space or the professor to sell it / feel accomplished. I've read a number of books with absolutely no use or interest for economists or anyone really. They were even outdated if this gives you an idea.
