Glad you like the Q&A - took longer than we expected to get going, but this is the exclusive news I was referring to all along. Many thanks to Elvin (most questions) and Xhane (answers).

My own favourites:

Quote:
In the campaign mode, you’ll have some cut scenes, dialogue boxes. You won’t have big texts like in H IV, but for curious players, there’ll be plenty of very detailed text to read in the bios of heroes, creatures, cities, etc.
Also map makers will be able to put all the boxes they want in their maps.

As you know, 2011 will be the 25th anniversary of M&M, so surprises are to be expected.

Quote:
Yes, there is a Demon invasion in Heroes VI.
No, it is not the most important plot element in the storyline.

I think it was confirmed to us that the final H6 campaign (the unlockable one) should consist of three maps.

Agreed; the return of the text boxes would be cause for joy indeed. They were so quintessential to the series that I was utterly shocked not to see them in H5.

It's a means of encouraging community involvement.  It helps build awareness for a game, and also increases its longevity, allowing the developers to release things like expansion sets and downloadable content as a means of refreshing replay value.  It makes good business sense; they might be able to get a good five years out of the game, if the map editor is strong enough to sustain interest.

Actually it looks more like a marketing trick to me. You need more than willingness to make maps. With the editor you'll have the tools, but placing objects/creatures in random order all over the map is as good as pouring some vegetables in boiling water and hoping that they will ultimately turn into soup. You need to know the actual resource requirements of each faction, you need to know exactly how the areas of control work and how they can be exploited, you need to know each creature's relative strength to decide whether it should or should not guard specific resource/object, you need to know how fast the heroes can move over certain terrains, etc., etc. etc. You can learn the very basics only after you play a few games, so I wonder how the release of the editor before the release of the game will do any good.

unless they release a demo before or along with the map editor, Zenofex. (as Markkur said, I believe)

But still, I agree the editor can only be properly used after people have played the actual game for some time.

And about the FAQ xD

#5 - I wonder how limited is the customization in solo mode. And in multiplayer too, actually. Will we be able to choose visual features or just gender and class? And specialization?

#11 - Now I wish I could hug the developers. This is exactly what I was expecting, and seeing that there will be 6 different sets of unique buildings with cool uses like these for each faction makes the awesome factor of the game raise a lot to me. I wonder if, like has been said, they will be seen from the adventure map. That would make the "know your enemy town" thing even more valuable, I guess. But really, this is something I'm really excited about

I'll miss the long dialogue boxes in H4. Those were the most memorable things in that game. I used to skip turns with my heroes so I could get to the next part of story more quickly. :-) It was like reading about something and then actually living it in the next few turns.

Race unique buildings sound good. The Haven's special reminds me of the Terran's Scanner Sweep from Starcraft. Great way to explore the map without actually going there. Could be used to spy on the enemy early on before he even knows that you know what you know. :-)

9 - Creatures should affect a hero's movement. I don't know why they didn't consider this. Maybe it was easier to balance the factions?

12 - 10 multiplayer maps? I was expecting at least 15.

They don't want you to ignore creatures only because they are slowing the hero down.

I wonder what's the deal with the race vs theme creatures, the 3 revealed factions don't really break new ground in that aspect, though I guess the Fate Weaver does count as a "theme" creature with the spider goddess thing and all. But in the case of Inferno, theme and race is the same, and if the 4th faction is beastmen, same issue.

I think they're referring to factions like Sylvan and Dungeon, where the race is Elves but the theme is "mystical things" (or "evil mystical things", as the case may be).  The race element of Dungeon was overwhelming and, a lot of people would say, it was a mistake.  Sylvan had a few non-elf creatures, but not enough to make the faction really interesting.

It sounds like they're trying (with the remaining two factions, at least) to steer away from that kind of homogenization of line-ups, especially with the factions that are classically so intriguing primarily because of their diverse creature line-up.

Again, it's less of an issue with the factions that have already been released (Haven = Human, Necropolis = Undead, and Inferno = Demons) than it is with the ones we haven't seen yet (Academy = Arcane Constructs and Creatures, Sylvan/Rampart = Mystical Nature Things, Dungeon = Dark and Mysterious Things, etc).  It should work pretty well.

^You're right, some H5 factions went overboard with the racial stuff, I guess it was the biggest issue in the Dwarf faction, and there were complaints about some of the Orc units as well. So whatever the 4th faction is, we should expect changes accordingly, and if the 5th faction is Naga, there won't be 5-6 Naga-something units then.

- For Haven: the Statue of Revelation which removes fog of war in a targeted area, once a week.

This suggests to me a returning fog of war like in heroes 4 or some RTS games.  While this is a regular feature in the strategy genre, for my personal abilities it makes it really hard to play the game.  That is the way my brain is wired.  I'm praying it is not so, because if it is I won't be able to enjoy the game.

Can someone explain the text box thing to me? I'm pretty sure that I've played heroes 5 maps that have boxes that pop up with text in them explaining the story like in Grumpy Old Wizard's story map.  Are you talking about something different?

I believe they already mentioned Fog of War would stay the way it was in H1, 2, 3 and 5.

They were present in SOME form in HV, but not in the traditional way of H1, 2 and 3.

That was only a mod, not officially supported (and not nearly as easy to work with as the original text boxes).

Map randomization was the biggest draw for me in Civilization, actually.  If it was properly implemented, I'd be behind that as well.

Unfortunately, that would also likely boost the CPU requirements, which always makes me nervous...

Random map generator is the best sh*t that have ever been made in the world of games, seriously
They just need to make sure they add a lot of options for the players.
and the maps must be balanced(if the player wants it that way that is)

So that is what I'm wishing for Christmas as well

I am not to worried about the lack of single maps.  After all the ones that they provided I found a bit lacking anyhow.  The community provides superior single map.  I look forward to some of the epic maps that will come from the mapmakers here.

This sounds very interesting, and I am planning to preorder as soon as possible.
