16:9 and 16:10 came around because it was snowing cheap to produce in contrast to 4:3. The reason 4:3 is dieing is because its most costly to produce. Which is quite a shame, because 4:3 is a better resolution.
And most laptop screens these days are ironically fit to be 4:3 screen, its just that they are gimped down and not properly using the insane amounts of waisted plastic and metal in usually lower or upper corners
1280:800 is 16:10(sounds more sexy then 8:5).

Right then.  Laptops obviously don't come with CRT screens, so that is one response to Binabik's question.  While I currently use a CRT (1024x768) they aren't easily available if you tried to buy one today.

1280x1024, native for my LCD. It's not the frontline of technology since it's from 2003 but it works for me. Only thing annoying me is the backlight leak from the left side of the sreen now that it's old. Oh and it's too slow for playing supaplex. No other issues. Been loving it since I got it.

And thank god we got rid of the CRTs, they're god damn horrible. Just the amount of space they take is ridiculous. Not to mention power use and heating. And they kill your eyes. In modern time there is no reason to use CRT since they're more expensive than flats too.

The one thing I won't be getting is a widescreen panel, ever. My brother and father both have one and they're absolutely horrible to use for work or gaming.

I thought the whole idea was to put two documents or screens side-by-side and be able to see both fully?

Not big enough resolution for that.
You'd need the 2560xsomething for that.
Most widescreen are 1650xsomething.

Say what you want, but LCD is still completely and utterly horrible. It got a requirement for a backlight, no monitors takes capabilites in that they all should be able to reset refresh beyond 60 fps, they require a backlight to be readable.
CRT is only ridicules because its really really old, and nobody has managed to push out a working replacement yet. CRT was better at the way the screen resetted for the next picture too. The worst part is that the "rival tech" is already at a level where they are better than what plasma tv was when it was pushed out, but we are going to stick to LCD because its the lowest common determinator

SED, a screen tech I want to be mainstream, because its essentially CRT improved to a reasonable level. And other stuff: FED, FLD

I like 4:3. Can't stand the "panoramic" resolution.

So, 1280x1024 for me.

Oh no, stop doing maths, it hurts!

My desktop is 1680x1050, and laptop 1440x900. I always work with highest resolution available though, would like to get some 30" screen What a pity they don't make smaller (and cheaper) monitors which allow 2560x1600

The reason stuff went widescreen is simple. Screensize have for a LONG time now been measured in inches at the diagonal. A widescreen produce more inches with less material. Not more actual screensize, but you could say that a 10" 4:3 could be transformed to... maybe 14" widescreen. And we all know that "big screen" have lots o' inches, so widescreen was bound to sell more!
Later it was adopted for computers as well, where it has the advantage that you don't get very high monitors, which would put a lot of strain on the neck (watching side-to-side only requires eye movement, not neck/head movement).

@Joonas and Binabik: yes, it's the other way around. My bad.

@Diablo: SED would be nice. As would BTX and a bunch of other technologies that have been discarded because it would "take effort to change the standards".

EDIT: Sorry about the many and strange edits.

To question logic: Who places their monitor in such a way that they must twist their neck to look at any of the edges? It sounds completely and batsnow insane.
The only reason for the adpotion is money, the sheeps thinks 24 inch monitor with 16:9 is larger than 23 inch 4:3 monitors Image a marked with no sheeps, only people who want quality, and their in a large enough number that its not expensive superexpensive quality, but quality as in made properly.

Usually when using computers the users are quite close to the monitor (roughly an arms length), apart from with television, were you're usually several metres away. So having a large screen for your TV is usually no problem, regardless of ratio. Having a large 4:3 screen for computers would mean it would be quite high so that you would either have to place it further away (which would use up more space and mean that you wouldn't see the screen as well), keep looking up when there's stuff on the upper part of the screen (and thus straining your neck) or have a bunch of wasted screen on the top part.
Having a large widescreen would mean that the screen would grow in width alone, rather than hight, so that you can move only the eyes.

That's why it started, yes, and is still true for the television market. It is also true for the television that it has always been like that. A "high definition" TV wouldn't be close to an HD monitor for computers. What is considered HD in the TV-market is ridiculous!

You know. The proper height for your screen is when your eyes are on the same level as the very top of the screen. Ergonomically speaking this is where you want to be.

Either you cut of the parts at the edges, leaving a part of your widescreen unused, or you stretch the image, making every single person look like a toad.
