Running HOMM 3 on Windows 7

I installed HOMM 3 Complete off the discs perfectly fine (didn't even have to run as administrator or set any compatibility settings). However, when I try to run the game it stops at the splash screen (the one with Gelu and Gem, that says "Loading, please wait..."). It simply wont load.

This might be irrelevant, but when I "end process" it, the splash screen wont disappear from the desktop, even though the process does disappear. Then, if I try to end explorer.exe, the whole system will hang and I have to restart.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

No one should be deprived of such an awesome game, so please help me!

<IMO> The running of the install tells you zero about compatibility.
I have Win7 and have 'H3-Complete' installed and it runs but I did this during installation.

Win 7 is odd, in that it has TWO program folders on the drive. Placing "older games" like this have to go into the programs(X86)-folder as your install target. I think X86 is a sort of DOSshell, which can mirror older OSs. I don't know that's a fact but it seems the way this works.  Also, when installing; I right click on that exe. and "run as adminstrator". After installation, I right click on the Game-Icon and run the compatibility check/test wizard and select SP2. I think it is chosen by default by the Comp-prog. <imo> don't pick SP3 because it is a "later update", I have some foggy memory, that it can affect on-line playing for some reason?

Hope it works for you.

FYI, I am wanting to install WoG but am waiting because I have seen a couple of problems with Win7. (remember the win-updating bit) I may just put the whole shibang on an older PC with XP and dedicate the game to it. Of course I would have to fix that PC first. "If it aint one thing, it's another"

It's very difficult to get Heroes 3 to run on the 64-bit version of Windows 7. However, it most likely will have no problems on the 32-bit. That's because it has been created to run ot 32-bit architecture, which obviously was the only one available when it was released. So, I would suggest for you to try to run it on Win7-32

Do you know if that is why it runs in the special programs folder X86 and will not under the normal system folder? As I said, I made no distinctions to 32 or 64bit and Complete runs fine but it has to be in this folder. I'm not arguing, just wanting to learn if you're a step ahead. Maybe this explains to me what the X86 folder does.

I've only got 64-bit unfortunately.

But i found out that it should work, and there might be something wrong with my disc. I copied across a no-cd cracked version from my laptop, and it opened fine but said that i could only play multiplayer and prompted me for the shadow of death CD. So it DOES run, but maybe there is something wrong with the disc?

I was hoping to run it off my main computer, but i might have to run it off my laptop by the looks of things (which has XP SP3).

@DarkM

Well, if you did exactly the steps as I listed and it's still a no-go?, then I'm at a loss. One last ditch measure. When I could not get my 'H5' to run because of missing a DLL. I realized that Win7's latest Direct X did not have all of the dlls used in older games. Probably won't make a dif. here...sharing that just in case.

Yes, he needs to install DirectX9 - the latest and greatest.

So the system will have both DX9 and DX11 (or DX10.1).

I don't have 64 bits Windows 7, on 32 bits it's working just fine. Anyway I'm very curious about this issue. Statistically for majority of people it work on 64 bits system smoothly or close to and for some it's simply no go. And I have no clue about the reason(s) or, at least, possibly not all of them.

I have Vista 64 bit (I know, I should get it upgraded) and the Sold out games release of Heroes 3 complete.  It crashes during installation.  Is there any fix for that? (Sorry for posting on another thread, my post count is insufficient to make my own)

Yea i did follow those steps, still a no go. I'll try installing Direct X 9 (and maybe some others if that doesn't work) then see what happens.

Also, @mooselord911, that requirement is there for a reason But in answer to your question, I'm not really sure

It's running now?

I see why the DirectX-version slipped by me with H3, if this is the snag. When I did the above steps for H3, I had already updated to all older-DLLS with my previous H5 installation which would not run without 9c? Installing H5, I had chosen to not install 9c with the game since I had DX10 thinking it would have all of the previous versions...it didn't Had to install the one supplied on the installation disc. You should have to do the same with H3.

I thought H3 was something like DirectX 7.something? I can't help thinking that H3 and H5 has been mixed-up here. "Verify" what DX version H3 is and go to DX's Main-site to get it.

I installed Direct X 9.0c, and that didn't fix it, but I realised that that shouldn't be the problem. It ran alright when I used the no-CD cracked version, so it shouldn't be Direct X, right? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Direct X only has to do with sound, graphics, etc. and shouldn't affect how it reads discs?

And the disc itself is fine, I reinstalled it normally on my laptop and it ran off the CD. Next I'll try making an .ISO of the disc, mounting it and running it off the mounted disc, unless someone else has any other ideas.

And yes HOMM 3 runs off Direct X 7.

Since you've done all the "Needed steps that Win7 requires to run older programs",  It has to be an "installation-source"issue. I used the install disc from Complete and had zero problems. You did un-install and delete everything previous, before the new install?
Grasping straws here. Good luck

What happens when you run the game As Adminstrator?

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling to a directory that doesn't need administrator priviliges?

Should be workable - I'm running the Homm3 Complete from GOG and it works great on my Win7/64 system (I did have to patch it so that it would use only one core of my cpu.  But even if I didn't patch it that way it would  still run - just crash quite often...)

problems with online-play

hi guys,

i have a strange problem with heroes 3 under windows 7...

my brother and i wanted to play via tcp/ip the other day (for the first time since we got our new computers which use w7). at first everything worked fine - he joined my lobby, we chated a bit and started the game.
however, in the game itself we couldn't chat with each other. we could send messages and they appeared normally to whoever sent them, but they never reached the other player. and after a few minutes, one of us randomly droped out of the game without any errormessage.

we tried to get it to work numerous times, also in compatibility-mode and "run as administrator" but it's always the same problem.

both of us use heroes complete.

we're totally out of ideas. does anyone have an idea of how to get this to work?

thanks in advance!

don't know why but I have problems launching heroes 3 if I have firefox running at the same time. Sometimes it will minimize to system tray and I just have to click on the icon to get it working.

Problem with heroes 3 on windows 7

Hey folks , recently i bought a copy of heroes 3 complete just because i wanted to play for old-times sake. Now thing is a had a copy of WoG installed on my computer and accidentally i Wogified 1 map without reading the warning about the ERM scripts.
Now my problem is the Heroes 3 copy i installed just freezes either after some time or just as i enter the menu ( never during the movie from the beginning). I'm running windows 7 32-bit with 4gb ram ( Quad core 2.4ghz each core w/e) and a gfx card from ASUS, an NVIDIA 9500 GT with 1gb DDR2 . It simply freezes and the sound just loops on and on like it's stuck and i have to Ctrl alt del and shut it off from the processes.
Heroes 4 and 5 work just fine, but i can't seem to get what the problem is with heroes 3 ( which is the best imo from all the games).
Kindly apprecite some feedback. Thanks

P.S: got latest drivers installed everything up to date

Win 7 issues and WoG freeze

Hello all,

I have been playing Heroes 3 for over a decade but never joined any forums so far. I hope I`ve not missed that much )

I run the H3 on Windows 7 32-bit. The only issue I have is with the screen resolution, game is made to run in 4:3 mode and this drives me some troubles. Whenever I start it appears in a small window, tried everything I was aware of - setting the game to maximize from the shortcut, graphics settings - no effect at all. This is the only problem I`ve noticed so far when running under 7.
In regards to the WoG - it happens on my WoG too, freezes only during battles and the screen turns black. I cannot close the game afterwards. This wasn`t present on the SoD and it existed when under XP so I would say it is a stability issue of the WoG ( its a fan-driven project ) you have encountered.

you can always use High resolution patch. H3 originally was MEANT to be played in 800x600 resolution, so that's not a bug

My HOMM3 complete was working fine on windows 7 for awhile. Aside from the usual crashes from the dual processor problem(To solve this just go to task manager and go to the process and turn of one of the processors found here http://www.mastertronic.com/supportfaq/heroes-of-might-and-magic-iii), I was fine. Suddenly one day the loading screen didn't even come up despite using autorun or no autorun. The program is supposed to start up then it tells you to insert the disk. But nothing happened at all after double clicking. Any help pls?
