Is the game that good? I'm hearing lots of positive things about it. Anyone willing to give me two-three lines of what to expect from that game? Balance & difficulty included

Will totally make a monk type character as soon as we have a decent Unarmed perk tree mod.

@Doomforge:

+ Great atmosphere
+ Astounding graphics
+ Living, believable world
+ very mod friendly
+ thrilling combat
+ slaying dragons man, dragons.
+ Random minor quest generation makes the game potentially endless
+ Locations often have their own little stories, making exploration very rewarding.

- several ways to exploit the balance and make yourself super-powerful
- some skilltrees serve little more than roleplaying purpose
- marriage system is very shallow
- your choices have very minor impact
- companion control system is incredibly annoying
- Dark Brotherhood sucks ass

EDIT:

From the Nexus:

"Bethesda forum user Raestloz seems to have found evidence of the upcoming first Skyrim DLC. While looking through the 1.5.26 patch files, he found a number of additions explicitly named with "DLC01." Another user, Karellan, has listed out the individual files:

Snow Elves have been mentioned in earlier games (in Morrowind's Bloodmoon expansion, for example) and are now known to be the Falmer. The book Fall of the Snow Prince also has some information that may be relevant.

Meanwhile, Pete Hines recently tweeted that additional Skyrim DLC info might come "next week" (maybe). Let the speculation begin."

I've found Skyrim substantially more enjoyable than Oblivion or Morrowind, which were both just 'meh' for me. I'm not sure why though. The overall atmosphere of the game just feels more adventurous. Like I was walking through these super-snowy mountains headed for a town further north, and this sabretooth tiger just runs up out of nowhere and ****ing kills me. It was great.

My khajiit is Ziff'aram Tidecrowne. He's a white-furred cat with a heavy  focus in speech/crafting along with his archery. Sneak and lockpicking go along with it also, but I'm not going to join the thieves guild with him or do any pickpocketing. He's a goody goody rogue char with a 'fix it' mechanical personality.

If the game deserves a 2nd run when I'm done with it, I'll probably play some murderous wizard.

Wow, a proper Khajiit name with a status prefix and everything.

Lore achievement gained.

Here's my character.

Alerik Mistblood, lonesome ranger traversing the northern lands, helping the local people along the way when he feels like it.

Specializes in Two-handed combat and archery while sneaking around (nothing says hello like a two-handed swordstrike to the back of the neck from the shadows), and practices Alchemy more as a hobby.

Hates the cities, loves the wilderness. Refuses to align himself with any guilds or parties cuz he's all neutral and ****.

+ thrilling combat
It's a Diablo-like "click it to death" in my opinion, for a melee character at least. For a Destructive Magic + One-handed swordsman like my character it was "feed it with fireballs before it gets close and if it's still alive after that - click it to death". Apart from the killing animations, the combat gets boring pretty quickly but, again, that's IMO.
The levelling system is pretty dumb as well - if you want to progress faster, you have to develop nigh useless skills (i.e. skills which you won't normally use in 95% of the cases except for the sake of testing them).
All in all though, the game is worth trying at the very least.

I'm kind of getting burnt out with Alchemy. I feel like I put so much effort into grabbing those ingredients whenever I can just to brew some ****ty potion that has a single use.

I feel like the only time where you'd truly have an incentive to brew potions other than "get health, get stamina, get magic" or the poison equivalent would be if you're playing on Master difficulty and you want to be anal with your encounters (have resist fire potions on standby for a specific dungeon you're clearing, etc.) I really don't find that at all necessary to get through the game though, and I never play on the hardest difficulty because the game is huge as it is, and hard difficulty = play slower.

I brew Nighteye potions cuz my modded Skyrim is dark as hell when there aren't any lightsources nearby (at night or in caves/castles). Torches give my position away so...

Also Paralysis poisons for when I get surprised by something nasty... good crowd-control.

EDIT:

Also Alchemy gets way less tedious when you learn what ingredients are worth picking up instead of just picking all of them.

@Zeno:

It's hard not to fall into the habit of just making a Destruction wizard, which is basically a hack 'n slash with flashy lights. That's what the ES games lack over Dungeons & Dragons: wizards that truly feel like wizards. The arcane variety, the arrogance, the splendor: it just isn't there. I played around with conjuration for a bit and using summonings is boring. Illusion has some fun stuff but I feel like it would get taxing to rely on it as your primary school, especially since it has its limitations with certain creatures (undead, etc.). The concept of playing a restoration wizard sounds really neat, but I don't see restoration or alteration as practical primary schools. They're more like backups for your wizard or with a warrior. All in all, it's all-too-easy to give up on other schools as your primary and fall back to the philosophy of "kill it with fire".

In Oblivion I had this Mystic character that only relied on Absorb spells from the Mysticism school (originally supposed to be in the Restoration school but that's bull****, Absorb is a Mysticism skill, period.)

He walked into rooms, absorbed the fatigue of everyone and sent them to the floor, and then proceeded to cast a combined Absorb Health/Fatigue/Magicka spell that was really, REALLY slow and gruesome.

Basically had an entire room of people perma-paralysed, screaming constantly as their life was slowly sucked out of them. All the while my Mystic stood in the middle with arcs of life-energy flowing into him, regenerating even the Magicka he lost.

That felt mighty as ****.

But yeah... usually Destruction is the only real "primary" magic art. All the other stuff is just utility.

Restoration for healing, Illusion for stealth, Alteration for warriors, Conjuration for eh... destructionists who want something to tank for them.

When I started out my mass production of paralysis potions they came with 'restore health' aswell.

Currently I have an arcane warrior type class, Destruction and Restoration coupled with encanting and one handed. I moved to two handed weapons seeing how I dual cast my offensive spells (except fire runes)

Experimenting is a pain really... I just have all of my recipes written down on paper.

Alchemy doesn't feel as awesome as it was in Oblivion for some reason. The Menu system makes the whole thing so tedious to work with.

I'll probably just use it moderately here and there for the basics. I was originally planning on going for a really high alchemy score but I think I'm going to ditch that plan. I'll just stick with sneaking around with my bow and sticking arrows in people's throats.

Rogue characters are definitely the most fun imo. I just love sneaking up on a camp of people and shooting them in the head.

I have this strange urge not to play a Nord since playing a Nord in Skyrim feels too generic, but it would be cool to do a drunken warrior/rogue Nord with a warhammer.

*sneak up*

*WAM*

Join the dark brotherhood. Get drunk. Sneak attack people with warhammers. The more I talk about it, the better it sounds.
