Well, I am a Tolkien maniac, but I value the Silmarillion more than LotR. For I hate anything that reminds me of racism, those burzumishi Numenoreans talking about Lesser Men simply offends me skaaaai!(Sorry for swearing in Orkish anyway) I think no war should be allowed for any reason. Though humans seem to find wars fun, I do not find wars fun. What did Frodo do? He simply chose The Empire of Gondor instead of The Empire of Mordor.
(Take me seriously, I am not joking. After all I am a Morgoth fan!)

I think credit should go to Tolkien for the story itself and not for the world he created. Thed story about the ring and all is nice, and it's a grate thing to add those new racesand integrate them so well into the world. But when you start describeing continents, history that doesn't exist, wars that were never fought and genesis of non-existent races, that's just going a bit too far.

I couldn't stand the first book "The Fellowship of the Ring".
The main character Frodo was a non-entity, he couldn't do anything by himself. He was just a character buffeted hither and thither by forces and personalities greater (and only marginally more interesting) than his own. He was a non-entity, and a boring one to boot. I found myself detesting him.
Gandalf was interesting in The Hobbit. In this one he bored me. The poetry bored me. The elf-stuff made me doze. The back-history made me want to skip pages. They say it gets better after the second half. I'll never know...
To summarize: The first one-sixth of the Lord of the Rings sucks ***.
You know what. I couldn't stand the movies either.
