The future of video games.

The whole world of video games i expanding in many many different directions. INDIE games are becoming fairly hot stuff, Mobile games and simpler games are dominating markets and things like the Kinect are bridging the gap between game and reality, Yet at the same time games are becomming richer and more complex, technical hurdlers are becoming overcome and progress is being made. Which is why i ask this, Where do you think video games are going to go next?

and even outside of the industry, many questions are being asked. like where in the world do video games belong and questions of piracy.

In all directions, to any place where it can stick itself and make profit.
(aka washing machines, refrigerators, microwaves, dvd-covers...)

As long as awesome game developers like Valve and Blizzard don't become to greedy and ALWAYS make sure to do quality games then we're pretty fine. (I hope )

I think it won't be long until we have lenses that act as computer screens, with games being streamed into the lenses from huge entertainment servers

Oh and nerve-manipulation, like stimulating certain points in your brain to give you the appropirate feeling. Like entering a dungeon in a fantasy game and feeling how cold and damp the air is.

Combine that with advanced force-feedback equipment and you've got almost perfect immersion.

If you even want to stay conscious that is. Rendering yourself in some sort of dream state and streaming the game into your dream would probably require much less equipment.

Ah so many possiblities...

For some time now everything goes towards multiplayer, co-op, MMO because DLC's are most succesful on those (extended replay value).

I agree with Adrius here.

personally I'd like to see enhanced reality as a vibe in the next decade or so. Since we are already standing up with wii and kinetic, why not play call of duty like we play paintball, and better, without getting dirty with paint, but feeling the shot with the force-feedback vests, plus having access to visual data like the high-tech games suggests the character sees (as in minimap, ammo, etc)?

There are already lenses capable of doing that. Probably not possible to be mass produced yet, and I don't know about the quality of the enhanced reality (which is bound to the computer in which the images are processed and altered), but that's why I think it will take some years.

In all seriousness, I do think that videogames will be greatly enhanced by the further development of virtual reality; this is a avenue of technology that has both great potential as well as a little bit of danger hidden in it.

I personally think we are heading into user generated content... things like mods, game editors and all that. In the hands of a skilled community THOUSANDS of hours of playability are added to a game at no cost to the developers... How much work did blizzard have to do to build and update Dota? Absolutely none yet they arguably benefited from this sort of thing the most. Games like little-big-Planet and Minecraft are so successful because they have so much potential for user generated content.

But that's not their purpose. Developers, at least when it comes to top PC / console productions, want to sell as little as possible and ask consument to return later with new DLCs and sequels. Free content means no benefit for them, unfortunately

On the other hand, I've heard opinion from friend who plays Angry Birds and is completely amazed by the length of this game. But that's low-budget, mobile production.

Another game I look forward to is Flash-based Gemcraft: Labyrinth, coming with 169 levels and ridiculous replayability. Author demands few bucks for quite a number of advanced features, but even free version will provide weeks of entertainment.

That's why I like Bethesda games; they may still use DLC and the like, but they make their SDK readily available for anyone who wants it. Results in some truly impressive stuff.

yeah but what i'm saying is that I'm expecting modding support and level editors to become as common as multiplayer(which is a branch of this). It's already pretty big now and i can only see it getting bigger and more mainstream.

Valve has gotten greedy too (Blizz already was), they put a item store in TF2 where you can instantly buy and advantage over others.

Oh not to mention the price of  their developer game pack was raised to 370E or something for the duration of the xmas sales, then they reduce it by that 300e and make it seem like a huge discount when it's actually still 20e higher than during non sale periods

Why are Blizzard greedy?

It obviously costs a lot to pay all their hundreds of employees, maintain hundreds of servers all over the world and they working on four games at the same time - WoW + 4th expansion which they have already started on + Starcraft 2 + 1th Zerg expansion + Diablo III + unannounched next-gen MMO which is obviously going to be a huge work because they want it to be completly different from all other online games and its not meant as a replacement to WoW. Its likely going to focus on E-Sport.

It's pretty obvious they're making money hand over first from WoW.

Sure, it costs a lot to pay their employees and maintain the servers, but if that costs a lot, then they're making way more than a lot of money.

They are greedy they just are, trust me no proof needed.

However when you praise Blizzard like you do I hope it's not just for WoW

I do not see how Blizzard would be more greedy than any other company and unlike most companies, they do not tend to rush their games and actually deliver quality products. All their recent games are very popular for a reason and just because they are popular and make a lot of money does not mean that they are greedy though of course they want to earn money - what gaming company does not?

Nah, I do not only like WoW though I think they did a terrific job at the recent expansion where they actually did not only make changes to those paying for the expansions but for all the players (they remade all old content in the game that does not require expansions).

Starcraft and Starcraft 2 (less, since honestly they could have added a big new feature such as a fourth faction) are also amazing and the first game remade the RTS genre.

Without Warcraft 3, it is possible that we might not have cut-scenes in games such as H5 and H6 et cetera and the campaign and cinematics in both Warcraft and Starcraft were and are amazing.

I have not played Diablo but a lot of people seemed to enjoy those games aswell and I will make sure to try the third game. '

Personally, I don't get why some people like "hate" Blizzard. Especially on this forum because this is like the only forum where I have felt this.
I do not think I have heard a good argument why Blizzard sucks et cetera when they obviously do not since millions play their games and they earn a lot of money et cetera and are extremly successfull. WoW covers over 50% of all MMO subscribers.

Although the goal of any game is to destroy your brain, so maybe just pass your way because even Blizzard will greatly contribute

@Xerox

Good, thank you that was all I needed to know
I'm just getting a little worried when blizzard having all these micro-transactions in WoW and all that. So yeah well, Blizzard might not be as Greedy yet, but I fear that's what they will become.

Personally I don't hate Blizzard, I love them!
Warcraft III and Diablo 2 is two of the top 3 games I have ever played.
Can't wait to get my hands on Diablo 3.
I don't really hate WoW either I just don't fancy it that much(and they rape some of the awesome lore in Warcraft)

On-Topic:
Yeah I agree with Adrius, things like with interactions where you become one with the game is the future or at least I hope it is

@ Xerox-

If Starcraft 2 had a fourth race, people would have rioted. That was for game balance concerns, so that at least actually can't be said to be Blizzard being lazy.

Plus, Starcraft 1 didn't really remake the RTS genre. It was very similar to earlier games like C&C, it just stuck more than any of those did.

Well, Warcraft jumped from 2 races to 4 but Warcraft was never as large in the e-sport thing as Starcraft anyway.

I understand to a 100% their descision to keep the old three races and obviously, they are not exactly the same. Like the Starcraft 2 Protoss are AMAZING in my opinion and have so many more options and unique mechanics and abilities such as Warp-In which is incredibly useful and omg the best ability in the game, FORCE FIELD! Its so awesome!!!

Its just a personal wish that they could have gone with a little less conservative route with Starcraft 2 and have introduced a new, unique 4th race that would be based around the Xel'naga and/or the Hybrids (which appear as super powerful units in SC2 anyway... in the campaign).
I would love to see a faction similar to the Norse in Age of Mythology who were really unique. In Age of Mythology, the Norse race has its military units as its builders and I thought that was totally awesome and made that race very fun to play.
