The colonies faction...

The colonies

A jungle themed faction, based in my country mythology. I live in Brazil, so, it's about Brazil's myths and culture we are talking about. Most of them came from the native or Portuguese culture.

Racial ability : quick steps – in the adventure map, the hero has more mov. Points than the others. One more "step" for each three levels.

Country : the twelve capitancys.

The jungles are insurmountable, so, the colons keep quiet in the cities, behind the palisades and gates build by the metropolis. Only heroes adventure themselves outside the walls.

Colors : green, red and white

(example)

Heroes :

Might – conquistador – knowing the jungle and the wilds, the hero has more initiative than the others, and is benefits more from some abilities, like pathfinding and warpath. Every human or half-human in the army gains a bonus in the initiative and morale.

Magic – Jesuit – an expert in blessings, sermons and a natural born diplomat, the Jesuit is a master of the knowledge. They have an unique spell, call "convert", that converts a part of the enemy stack, depending the level of the hero( 5% each five levels)

Creatures and army

Core :

bandeirante

Conquistadores main apprentices, the bandeirantes are bodyguards specially armed for close and quick combats, with swords of even spears. When call to war, they plant traps on the battle field, with the experience gained by hunting down outlaws on the jungles.

Special abilities – quick combat(when the enemy is defeated in the first attack, bandeirantes gain some extra initiative) – trappers( the bandeirante can plant traps, which hurt the enemy and stop it, when he steps on the trap)

Curupira

Curupiras are jungle pixies, who protects the forest from invaders and illegal hunters. Their feet are turned back, so when a hunter follow his steps, trying to get out the forest, they get more lost by following a curupira steps. They mount savage boars, and trow spears in anyone that threatens your people.

Special abilities : lost( when the curupira uses this unique spell, the enemy affected enemy lost half their initiative ) - Shooter( they attack at range, with penalties in close combat) – retreat(when hit in close combat, the curupira retreats one stack and then attack at range)

Tupi warrior

Deep in the jungle, there are people call by the colonies by "tupis". They're natives, great hunters and skilled bow-masters. When summoned to war, allying the colonies, they cover their arrows with frog poison, which is generally mortal. Their jungle lore makes them the keepers of the forest.

Special abilities : Shooter( they attack at range, with penalties in close combat) – poisonous ( there are 30% of chance of poisoning the enemy) – jungle lore(when the hero is fighting in jungle terrain, the Tupi warrior gains extra initiative

Elite

Headless mule

The headless mule was once a woman, who fell in love with a priest; than, by some mysterious way(), she transforms into a hooved beast, expeling fire from the neck. The deep magic circle in the colonies discovered how to control these beasts, and use them in war. These cursed stallions breath fire in their enemies,  and stomp anyone that try to stop them.

Special abilities : fire breath( the enemy that is hit by the creature breath, get burned ) - foul vision ( the enemy morale is decreased by one) –  unstoppable( the mule stomp anyone that is in her path, stunning it, friend, or not)

Cuca

Cuca is a ugly bad witch, who eats children in the breakfast. She has a lizard or crocodile skin, and monstrous claws and teeth. She is a sorcerer, and a master hexer; everyone that try to defeat a cuca,  is searching for a big trouble.

Special abilities : caster(the creature can use spells from a grimoire) – eater(to refill their hp and mp, she can eat any other core creature/one per cuca/) – fear(anyone that hits cuca can be affected by the "fear" spell)- teleporter(just like the heroes 5 vampire)

Boitata

Boitata is a rare and terrible snake. It is a guardian, who turn into a fire-serpent when see a bad guy threatening their lairs. Has enormous eyes, always opened; yellow like the flames of a boitata. Few survive when attacked by one of these. It's almost impossible don't getting burned when encountering these snakes.

Special abilities : fire breath( the enemy that is hit by the creature breath, get burned ) – Fire scales
(any melee attack that hots the boitata, make the attacker burned ) – fire tamer( the boitata can summon a fire wall or fire ball into the battlefield)

Champion :

Mapinguari

The most rare and titanic beast in the deep jungle outside the colony walls are the fearsome mapinguaris. Jungle behemoths, with a enormous body, claws, teeth, and foul eyes; it's almost certain death encountering a mapinguari. Crocodile scales in the backs, and lots of fur in the rest of the body, the natural Armour protects it from most of the weapons.

Special abilities : chomp!(every elite or core creature hit by the behemoth attack, gets stunned) – berserker( when in the berserker form, mapinguari's attack power is almost the double) – Armour (the creature blocks 50% of the damage from core creatures, and 20% from the elite ones) – always retaliate( the creature always retaliate an attack)

I expect You liked it!

Neutrals :
(some hints I borrowed from Maken , so, credits for him)

Core
Shaman (pajé)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8NpKtgCWAw0/Stm5rFomUmI/AAAAAAAAEJo/ZoZMhdrXK2s/s320/o-paje-curando.jpg

Deep into the jungles, living in hidden huts, these witch-doctors can be encountered.  A powerful caster, he can heal or resurrect friends, plague enemies, or summons wasp swarms in anyone that threatens them.  To refill their mp, they can sacrifice a number of allied creatures.

Special abilities: caster (the creature cast spells from a grimoire) – shooter (the creature uses ranged attack)

Iara

The river mermaids are called Iara, “the deadly beauty”…  Any fisherman, who hears the Iara song, fell in love with her. When they get close to her, BAM! The evil water spirit drags him into the waters, and drowns the poor man…
Special abilities: hypnotize (the creature can control for one round the enemy creature affected by the spell) – beauty (melee attacks suffered by the iara, can infatuate the attacker (30%), preventing him to attack the mermaid again)

Jurupari myrmidon

The fish/frog-people, called juruparis, live deep into the lakes and the great river. These beastmans build cities under the waters, and are at war with the colonies. These juruparis are skilled trident fighters, and fearsome fish-warriors.

Special abilities – fish scales (the creature is not affected by water-based spells) – piranha bite (decreases the enemy armor [5% for each 20 juruparis in the stack]) - jumper (the creature can jump obstacles in the battlefield)

Jurupari caster

The fish/frog-people, called juruparis, live deep into the lakes and the great river. These beastmans build cities under the waters, and are at war with the colonies. These juruparis are witchdoctors, river casters or sorcerers.

Special abilities : fish scales (the creature is not affected by water-based spells)- caster( the creature cast spells from a grimoire ) - shooter( the creature attacks at range) - jumper (the creature can jump obstacles in the battlefield).

Elite
Corpo Seco (dry body)

Evil spirits, undead, vampires, ghouls:  all are corpo-secos.  To stay in the mortal world, they live like vampires, sucking blood from other people or animals. They can hide, and just disappear in the battlefield. They can jump obstacles (1, 2, or 3 stacks).

Special abilities: jumper (the creature can jump obstacles in the battlefield) – vampire (the creature drains hp and mp when attacking an enemy) – stalker (the creature can hide for two rounds in the battlefield) - undead( the creature is immune to morale and luck).

Chupacabra

These evil and gruesome beasts are always hungry, searching for blood. Chupacabras prefer to hunt goats, but, sometimes, men are found dead without a drop of blood in the body.  Rare, terrible, and monstrous, even their skin is dangerous, thorny and scaled.
Special abilities : vampire( the creature drains hp and mp when attacking an enemy ) – Thorny armor( attacks suffered by the chupacabra always reflects 20% of the damage given by the enemy ) – Flyer( the creature can fly and avoid obstacles )

Seja bem-vindo!

well, being a brazilian myself I can confirm that this is canon lore, Alci. Or at least one of the 'explanations' for headless mule.

And that is the main reason I've yet not made one brazilian myth-based faction. There are a good deal of mythological creatures, but most have silly backgrounds or were transformed into childish things, for sake of folklore, making it hard to find the real monsters. Oh, and there was also the extermination of indigenous people at the time of colonization (and afterwards), so not much left where to take myths from. But that is where the work starts, getting childish myths and transforming them in well done monsters.

I like how you put the tupi as archers, our own true elves. And mapinguari too

edit:
But what I don't like is the Conquistadores as heroes. I think a faction about the indigenous with their nature spirits would be more coherent, since they're enemies. So, I'll try one lineup now, just as example:

Heroes:
Magic - Pajé (a shaman)
Might - Jaguar Warrior (who cares if I borrow this? anyway, 'Onça Warrior' would be weird to most people and means almost the same )

Core:
Caipora
Tupi Archer
X

Elite:
Boitatá
Curupira
Cuca

Champion:
Mapinguari

for the X we can have:
Saci,
Iara,
Corpo seco ('dry body', 'Dried one', some sort of vampire),
or something else.

anyway, I guess that for fun there is no problem. But after the game is out lets see how something like this goes with the mod system the game will have.

Why not these ones you mentioned :

"Onça warrior"(this sounds a bit funny to me...)
"Pajé" - maybe, a neutral creature.

Saci : How a "one legged" guy with a red cap can attack? Kicking? In fact, I did't post he, because he is not a real "creature" or "soldier"( maybe a caster, a "wind caster")

Iara : she's a river mermaid, so, she won't "walk" in the battlefield.( forget the H4 mermaid ). And, if she turn into the human form, it will look like a common woman, not a creature. Anyway, she will appear in the neutrals.

Corpo seco - I never heard about such thing... but, this is a good hint for neutrals...

About the mule explanation : sorry guys. I was fixing this when my internet fell. Now, I am fixing these and other things.

Thanks for seeing it! I will add the neutrals soon, so, keep the eye on it!

well, that is mostly because of the 'child-fication' of these myths.

Saci is just a one legged brat that goes around in a whirlind? Make him a flying one, that is a bad omen, that brings storms and disaster. Maybe could look like heroes 2 genie, that is, half-hurricane... and of course, a caster.

Iara, well, its just a mermaid, so the human form could do, but with clear signs of its watery origin, kind of like the blue woman creature in the christmas tree (and I don't know if you've seen that).

Again, its just a matter of reshaping the myths, in order to give them some credibility.

Maybe, a female/might hero. I think I will separate the heroes by gender... good tip!

Vitorsly : Yes, there are some humans(two or three) in my faction, but, the storyline "asks" for humans... it's a human colony, wich the army benefits more from mercenaries and beasts than from their own people, but, they need humans there to control these "jungle people"

cool idea with the frog-people. If nagas weren't so known, there could be naga in amazon, perhaps. Do you plan on making more neutrals?
