Seas of Glory (IC)

Port Auflin. A collective mass of harbors and taverns owned by multiple Shalak trading companies in a town that Termingnan by name only. The businessmen and privateers own the Port really. It is rampant with crime and reeks of corruption, but it is a good place for business and recruiting.

The Revenant pulled into the docks along the murky waters of the Auflin bay. As the gangplank was lined up with the pier, six heavily armed men stepped out onto the pier and walked towards the nearest tavern. On the other end of the pier came a portly man in a what looked like to be formerly nice clothing.

"Tax collector..." muttered Davain to Captain Arcturus.
Arcturus grinned and said, "You know what to do."

As the tax collector came up to the group of pirates reading some bureaucratic nonsense off of a scroll of paper, Davaian punched the man in the stomach, then kneed him in the face. After quickly grabbing what money and valuables the man had, Davaian kicked him off the pier and into the nasty waters below.

"Ahahaha, little Shalak rats scrubbing for a little more fat, eh?" said Nurgunnen, the Raid Chief.
"Least they leave the nonexistent Termingnans to do their guarding. I honestly don't think they care all too much about the docking charges so much as the amount of money we spend on their ale." said Bellerusse, the Navigator.
"Aye" said a large Durok Berserker named Kalthak with a smile.
"We must not waste too much time here." said the Captain. "Bellerusse, Nurgunnen, and I will see the wise man. Quartermaster Hervin can get some supplies onto the ship while Davaian and Kalthak can go to the taverns and see what gold they can scrub off those dirty floors."
"Aye." replied Davaian. "Let's go, Kalthak."
"With pleasure..." said the Durok with a grin.

As they entered the tavern, they found close to around 150 people packed in a dingy bar drinking alcohol and messing with the barmaids and wenches.

"Alright...where do we start?" said Davaian to Kalthak.
"The least crowded place. Kitchen. Look for cook."
"Good plan, mate."

They both entered the kitchen to see a couple of young men trying to cook a simple meal while being directed by a bald fat man.

"You bloody fool! You add the flour first, eggs second!" yelled who Davaian was supposing to be the head cook. "Gildren, you're burning the meat too much! Our customer doesn't want a piece of char for his meal!"
He then noticed the two pirates and said, "Hey, you can't be in the kitchen now, you're going to have to wait for your meals. I'm sorry, sirs, but you'll have to go."
"You and a couple hired hands are serving all of this lot out there by yourselves?" said Davaian in amazement. "I'm impressed. Our ship, the Revenant, needs people like you."
"What, cooks?"
"Well, one more cook, actually. However, the one we already have is not exactly fit to serve all of the crew of the Revenant. Not to mention I am sure he would greatly benefit from your expertise."
"Only if you pay more than 80 silvers an hour."
"That's all you're paid for your work? We give out 200 silver per meal, plus a share of the spoils. Are you onboard?"
The Cook's face lit up and then he said, "Aye, captain!"
Davain laughed and then said, "I'm not actually the captain, I'm the first mate." as Kalthak chuckled.
"Ah, well whatever. Let me gather my belongings, and I'll meet you...where?"
"Pier twelve."
"Excellent. By the way, my name is Fogan Lindley."
"Alright then. See you there, Fogan."

They then moved into the main tavern room and set up a recruiting table there.
"Let's see we need a Gun Chief...and a Doctor I think, right, Kalthak?"
"Yes sir." replied Kalthak. "I also think we should get someone with skills in the fiddle. Arcturus has been pushing us to our limits. We need someone to keep the crew's morale high."
"Good call." replied Davaian. He looked around and saw a man playing a lyre on a table surrounded by happy singing pirates. "Get him. He looks popular."

Eduardo could not hold the ale in. Laughing he sprayed it from his nose, making the filthy table they sat at even more disgusting than it already was. Their tankards already kept sticking to the surface.
"Ooh, that's too rich. It's been great catching up with you, compaņeros."
Eduardo hab been talking and drinking with several old members of his cavalry company. Wiping a few drips of snotty ale from his nose, he picked up the tankards to have them refilled. It was his turn to pay for them.
Standing at the counter waiting for the new round of ale, Eduardo saw that a man and a lizard came into the tavern. They looked like they've been at sea for quite some time. They would be nothing excetional in a port town if they did not barge straight into the kitchen. That the cook came out in a hurry before the two exited was even more curious.
Eduardo carried the tankards back to the table, to see that his old friends had changed the table for a more clean one. Which did not say much, admittingly.
The cavalrymen raised their tankards in a traditional toast.
"So, how have you kept yourself busy these years?" one of Eduardo's friends asked.
"Pirating, other mercenary work, anything that pays realy. There's not much demand for a cavalier these days. I would give much to ride the raid on a horse again, but these blasted islands and their jungles make that nearly impossible. Not to mention that there's no decent war going on."
"So pirating then?"
"A ship's deck is no horse, but it's better than rotting jail. Too bad that most pirates are spineless coward. Only attacking unarmed traders. Any sign of resistance and those weasels turn tail. Not to mention that the capitan did not like me breaking his nose."
The others laughed.
"So, not even pirating at the moment. I have some coin left, but if I don't find some work soon I'll have to sell some of my things. Or take cowards work." Eduardo shuddered at that last comment.

The tavern housed many strange men and women who came here for a drink and meal. Vagabonds and criminals, pirates and other outlaws, all had gathered here in this shady establishment. Geralt too was here, back from the Frontrid empire. He sat in the corner, a bit away from all the ruckus. Near his feet a moderate size chest rested. It housed some of the rarest herbs and the venom of the deadliest beasts. Geralt also stored his alchemical instruments there. The man's clothes were black, save for the white beaked mask. A glass of distilled brew was in front of him. The only openings in his mask were for the mouth and eyes. He finished his drink and ordered another glass.  While waiting, he observed the two pirates who came here to recruit.

"There's too much going on. I'm not sure many would notice us save for your scaly hide." said Davaian. "Make a call."
"Aye, sah!" replied Kalthak.

He jumped onto the high table in one leap (which is impressive for a man, normal for a Durok) and then yelled in a booming voice that nearly silenced the tavern, "WE NEED A DOCTOR AND A GUN CHIEF! ONLY COME IF YOU ARE ANY GOOD! THOSE THAT AREN'T WORTHY WILL SUFFER BEING HUMILIATED! COME!"

He then jumped down and said to Davaian. "That should get their attention."

"What about those guys?" One of Eduardo's friends asked, pointing at the Lizardman that jumped off the table.
"What about them?" Eduardo asked.
"You said you were looking for work didn't you?"
"True, but they're not looking for anyone to lead their cavalry."
"Come on Eduardo, you know your way around a cannon and you were the best officer we had."
"Perhaps, but they're pirates. They're probably just more spineless cowards!" Eduardo said that last sentence loud enough for the entire tavern to hear.

Davaian smiled and said,"Well you do look like more of a professional than the typical clueless doctor on the high seas, so I think that's a reasonable-"

Suddenly there was an outburst from a table on the other side of the tavern. The tavern hushed as everyone looked to see what they would do next. Kalthak grabbed his battleaxe and slowly marched over to where Eduardo was, looking as imposing as possible (which wasn't hard given that he was nearly 7 feet tall).

Kalthak stood over Eduardo with his battleaxe and said, "You want to rephrase that statement, Ul'kra?"

(Ul'kra is a derogatory term used for humans meaning "snow skin")

Kalthak pulled out his other other battleaxe and gripped both of them tightly while saying, "You want to test that?"

"Kalthak", said Davaian. "Let's try not to kill the man that seems to have a group of armed mercenaries at his back."

"But our honor-!"

"Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Sit down!"

The people in the tavern roared with laughter as the Durok trudged back to his table grumbling as he went.

The air outside was salty and the smell was a mix of sweaty bodies, exotic spices and raw fish. Geralt walked to the hotel he stayed to pick up his knapsack.

Eduardo shook the hands of all his friends and made towards the recruitment table. He sat down in front of the man who seemed to be the senoir of the two since he bossed the Lizardman around not a few minutes ago.
"It is a rare thing to find a pirate who has a sense of honor these days. Most are cowards, but you seem to have a good head on your shoulders. What is this about you needing a Gunchief?"

The half-elf galloped over to the gate, anxious to get in before nightfall. One of the guards lowered his pike and cried, "Halt! Come no closer!" Avron raised his hands in surrender. "What's wrong? Why the agitation?" The guard snarled, "It's because you're a wanted man!" The half-elve said, pointing over the guard's shoulder, "You mean him?" The guard turned, and in that moment the horse plowed over him and sped into the city.

Kalthak growled at Eduardo, revealing his large sharp teeth, but stayed still.

"It is best not to rouse him though. Once he starts fighting, its hard for him to stop." said Davaian. "Anyways, those credentials look good. Not exactly sure how it would translate over to commanding a gun crew, but I'm sure that with your experience you'll have some unorthodox tactics that can be effectively used upon the high seas. As for commanding cowards, I assure you that we don't take our job lightly. Instead of the small Nerbulian trading ships most pirates like to go for, we instead target the Fortrind ones, and I'm not talking about the little ones that bring supplies over to the colonies, I mean those massive treasure ships that haul in gold from the Tuletan cities. That is why we use a brigantine instead of the sloops that are so popular with the pirates nowadays. Not to mention that our captain does not tolerate cowardice of any kind. Captain Arcturus was a former Fortrind commander and thus is very strict with us. We are closer to a military prison barge than a normal pirate vessel. Trust me, we don't have cowards on the Revenant."

"Davaian?!" A cry came from Simon in the back of the room. "Officer, I know this man! Please, I could get a job with him and leave you to your important job of whatever it is you do."

The human captain standing guard over the Half-elf bard glowered at his ward. "Mind rephrasing that twiggy?"

"Oh, um, yes. Sure. My friend over there DAVIAN! could take over your job of watching over me. Honestly, I don't think it would be too much trouble... Especially when I call in the bets for my bail. That crew owes me just enough to spring me from those False" The captain's look of disbelief angered Simon, "they're false, I tell you! I am no pirate! I'm just a traveling bard and the Duroks were just giving me a ride to a friend's wedding. You people not only made me absolutely late, but destroyed my best clothes too!"

"Honestly," The captain muttered, "I wouldn't mind it if you just... disappeared. You are the absolutely most annoying prisoner I have ever had... Alright?"

Catching his meaning, Simon leaned in closer. "And might something... dreadful but completely unavoidable have happened to your obnoxious ward? Hmmmm? I might throw in a few silvers and golds for you as well." At the mention of gold, the captain perked up, as did the two men at the next table. "Just take off these shackles, and I can reward you handsomely. Make it worth your while. And no one would have to know..." The unmistakable glint of greed in the captain's eyes told Simon that he had him, hook, line and sinker.

A few seconds later, when Davian finally stopped beating his head against the table and crying "Oh God, why him?", the shackles were off of Simon's hands. "Thank you, captain." He said, while snapping the man in the throat with his hand, following with a kick in the temple as the man fell to the ground. The other guards only noticed the captain hitting the ground, holding his throat and rolling around in pain.

"Thank you for your hospitality, gentlemen, and I'll be needing my effects." The guards just stared at him. "My gun, swords and my lyre, please." One of the very confused guards gave Simon everything he asked for back. "Thank you sir. Goodbye."

"Now Davian," The bard said, coming over to the Revenant's first mate and Edwardo, "about that open position on your ship, you know, the one that just appeared...?"
