Giving swords to everyone.

One thing that bothered me in Heroes V was giving units that didn't have weapons all along until that game. Such as the Djinn and Golems. Especially the Djinns, I liked when they struck their enemy with lighting/magic. Vampires too; they have claws! And they bite! Why do they need a sword?

I was just curious if anyone else noticed this and if it bothers them at all.

The H5 and H6 vampire isn't the Nosferatu type, it's more of the proud and noble style of vampire. Swords fit very well for them imo.

A Nosferatu style vampire wouldn't fit with Necropolis' theme either imo. The more primitive style belongs to the Core units while the Elites have a clean and professional feel to them.

Actually I found all 3 examples fitting. Sure I prefered the H3 genies but it was time for a change, ofc H4 djinns sucked badly but not because of the weapon. The strike and sheath blade in one motion was rather cool.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the topic was "Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads! Swords for everyone!"
As for the subject - they took the swords from certain creatures and gave them to others. In Necropolis' case, the Skeletons are the main sword suppliers for the Vampires. I can't say that the weapon is overexploited. So far.

I don't think the swords are that much of a deal, but my problem was how the vampires drain life from enemies. Do they do it through the sword or what?

I definitely see where you're coming from. Lately I've been less apprehensive with change. The reason being is that I adore Heroes II & III on their own and I don't really need any more of it. Plus, I've been playing Heroes V a lot and I love it a lot more. I'm all of a sudden starting to trust Ubi more and have faith in their decisions... I dunno, maybe I'm just getting old.

I really think the scimitars did look good on Genies, the way they were done. They looked better than ever, in my eyes.

Golems also looked very good with weapons. I would rather them attacking with fists, smashing their opponents. But their animations were done really well so honestly, I have no complains there just thumbs!

Vampires, well, are a major grief for me. From late 1800's that Vampires first appeared in literature to Ubisoft's H6 Vampires, there were only a handful few that I can claim they're to my liking. Though I love Lord Byron, I hate the image he indirectly created for vampires. I would rather them be more like the way Byron described the Vampire in 'the Giaour', and less like the way Polidori described him in 'the Vampyre' inspired by Byron's persona. That means, I like Vampires to be more like their traditional selves, the supernatural entities, phantoms made flesh, demons of the night with vague shreds left of their humanity and personality that they had in life. I don't like them when they appear as nobles with refined and elegant tastes, young and good looking, sophisticated and chatting about as if they're alive. The image of Nosferatu gives that undead feeling better than the armored, sword  wielding, good looking vampire. But for both H3 and H5 Vampires, the background story suggests otherwise.

Well, this is a matter of taste.

I find h4 genies best of the sequel, doing destruction from a distance as they should do. H5 Genies are just some dumb bullies that have chosen might over their magical nature. Vampires in H4 were the best too, I dont like the childish blah vampire from h2-h3 (which was derived from the 1930's movies). But I can take the change in them wielding swords as they do in one of my favorite movies Underworld.

Actually from all creature revealed to this moment these are with swords:

Haven
Angels

Inferno
None

Necropolis
Vampire

Stronghold
None

Naga
Wave warrior

Never anyone say anything against BLAH!!! That's the most epic game sound of all!

Now, for the swords issue...I like swords with the vampires. I do not like them with Djinn, so, and even less with golems...come on, golems are a forged weapon themselve. Giving them swords is like...like the "2handed sword" from munchkin: funny, but more in a ridiculous way. Not good for a serious game.
For the genies...never liked them too much in H5 anyway, neither in 4...not gamewise but stylewise. In H5, whole academy wasn't my town, dspite me LOVING the racial.
But there's hope for H6^^

I think there should be at least three kinds of vampires in any fantasy world. One kind is the feral vampire who gives into their bloodlust fully, gaining greater physical prowess at the cost of losing control of their hunger, and becoming more powerful with each new victim they drain. The second kind is the mage vampire who uses their immortality to pursue knowledge, and gains power through the study of arcane secrets. The third kind is aristocratic vampire who gains power through political and economic means.

With respect to Heroes, the first two kinds can be Necropolis creatures. It would be nice if it was like Heroes 4 where you had to choose one of the two types of Vampires or if there was a multiple upgrade system like in Heroes 5 where the two different types of vampires are upgrade options.

I have to disagree a bit. Though for the fantasy world setting, it's okay. But one has to consider how many (or well, in my eyes, for the games that there are: NOT many!) creatures there are in HoMM. And splitting vampire in 3 would only be great if there were MANY more creatures, imo. Also, I don't htink the vamp mage is necessary, really. The lich as an undead mage serves the role better, imo.

In one or another form we have the three kinds of vampire in H6

feral - ghoul
magical - lich
knight - vampire

It would make sense to split vampires up if there was a multiple upgrade system like in TotE or if you had to chose between two creatures per level like in Heroes 4.

Alternatively, the additional types of vampires could be a neutral creatures.

Also, I don't really see a problem with two kinds of creatures that have overlapping roles. That really depends on player preference.

Because they didn't say blah in H4 at all. xD

I didn't like the H4 waiters. H3 vamps are still my favs, because they're the closest to how people actually perceived them in the middle ages, and they're an homage to the 1922 Nosferatu. The entire "I'll drink your blood and you'll like it" thing stems from the 18th century and Heroes are a medieval setting after all. Also I reckon that, on the battlefield, you're looking to frighten, not charm the enemy to death. Then again, vampires are rather vain creatures, so both approaches make sense.

It of course just boils down to whether you prefer Bela Lugosi, Max Schreck or Bill Nighy.

H2 and H5 were pretty cool, but I still prefer the H3 ones meself.

Half of the Necropolis creatures in Heroes II were rather pushy actually. Great entertainment indeed. But my favourite is the stove-pipe Golem.
