Theoretically...Large defense would provide something for the stronghold creatures to beat on, while gaining rage points! But I have no practical experience with them...If i were playing 1v1 against stronghold I would pick academy

I would only pick Academy against Orcs if I had to choose from hardcore magic races.
My fav choices would be Fortress and Haven, because of good survivability of the troops and the good-working Light buffs that can help you even the odds against Blood Rage (and in most cases, Orcs don't try to shatter light, while SDark is an obvious choice)

Shatter Dark may help a bit but it doesn't mean Frenzy won't be extremely effective against the Orcs.
