yes of course, no problems with having friends who live far.

but why doing better than other countries (in term of economical or military power for example) has become more important than just making sure everyone has a shelter and can eat? small communities could very well produce for themselves all they need without being dependent from anyone else, and still have contacts with other communities, but real contacts, you know, not just trade.

You bring up questions for which I don't think anyone has the real answers. Of course I don't think it's right that countries concentrate on building up their power instead of making sure people have enouph to eat and a place to stay. I don't think anyone thinks that's right it's just we are not exactly sure what to do about it. I am afraid nothing I will say here will address these problems. I adimre your willingness to tackle these questions.

Oh and Del Diablo. I suppose if ethics are defined that loosely then I must admit they could have an effect. Just note i assume humans are self intrested for the most part.

I'm not sure there are answers. maybe we should actually not seek any answer. maybe it is because we are always trying to applies one or the other answer that there are so many problems? I mean, we are complicating everything.

Technology has its role to divide large nations into smaller nations.  But most importantly, ideologies and philosophies take a bigger role to get the job done.

Plus how else would you explain why these new countries joined Inter-governmental organizations like the WTO and the IMF?

Actually, to my understanding, access to the WTO (more flows of capital and other resources beyond simply what is available in the local nation's own borders) and being a member of the IMF (potential access to loans and even financial support to some degree) are in and of themselves having their own incentives, so this at least is a flawed assessment of the reason for joining either of these. It would be like saying you wanted to join NAFTA so your nation could have a stronger military, when NAFTA (at least in THEORY) is supposed to protect North America's economies. It doesn't seem to have any real connection.
