Flags flown at half mast for Whitney Houston

I had to shake my head in disbelief when I read it.

Seriously?  Am I the only person who thinks this is insanely inappropriate?

You should see what they did when they killed Nicolae Ceausescu...

It seems respectful, not sure where the inappropriacy comes in .

I read the comments so nevermind ...

Great accomplishments???? Seriously??? What accomplishments did she have that were so great? The fact that she did more crack than Charlie Sheen and LIVED? I can't believe this is even an IDEA but it is from Jersey, the home of Snookie and "The Situation" so I shouldn't be suprised...

36 negative comments each with a  reason as to why this is inappropriate; it's a fun read.

What's new? There are plans for Beyonce statue in Houston (hm... no pun intended, really), at least in Whitney's case no taxpayer money will be spent on something ridiculous.

Flying the flag at half staff has been traditionally reserved for people who served the country in some special way (political leaders, soldiers, etc.) or in respect of some tragedy (foreign or domestic).  What did Whitney Houston do?  Drug habits aside, she was just an entertainer.

I just think it dilutes the meaning of flying the flag at half mast.  Why don't we award her the medal of honor while we're at it?

I'd rather they didn't do this because she was't a public official in any way, and this wasn't some disaster that involved many people being killed or hurt. Flying half-mast is a state endorsement that appeals to a certain person and a certain musical taste. The governor is wrong when he says Whitney was a pride to NJ. She was a pride for some people in NJ. There's plenty of people that either 1) outright don't like her, or 2) have an apathetic opinion towards her, like me.

Not everybody likes a certain state representative either, but that isn't the reason they would fly half-mast if something happened to them; it's because they represent the state and the entire body of people one way or another.

This isn't to say that a state rep's death gets more glory than a major cultural icon. There are events going on to commemorate Whitney that have a lot more impact than a flag flying at half-mast at a state building. But half-mast is for state tragedies, so this isn't a matter of being "yes" or "no". It's simply N/A - not applicable.

Ridiculously funny you mean. I can understand the governor having the intelligence and fore-sight of an infant, but... there's no but

I'm waiting on Elodin's insight on this matter; I'm eager to read half a page worth of outrage, or a simple one-liner.

Pardon me, but where did I say it wasn't within the governor's powers?

I'm not saying it's ILLEGAL.  I'm saying it's INAPPROPRIATE.

It reminds me of how these days every kid in every competition gets a ribbon or trophy, because, well, why?  When you hand out awards and honors to everyone, what is the value of an award or honor?  It's a sort of economic inflation, but instead of lessening the value of monetary currency, you're lessening the value of recognition.

What did Whitney Houston do to deserve a special token of respect from the state of New Jersey?  I'm sure there are hundreds of soldiers from New Jersey who have been killed in combat over the last few years.  Why wasn't the flag lowered for each of them, the people who gave their lives in service to the country?

I just think this cheapens the honor that is flying the flag at half mast.  It accomplishes the same thing that awarding the Peace Prize to Obama did.

Quote:
In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time. Her awards include two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards in her lifetime. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide...  Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.
Houston is the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits ("Saving All My Love for You"; "How Will I Know"; "Greatest Love of All"; "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)"; "Didn't We Almost Have It All"; "So Emotional" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go")...
Houston's first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard (1992). The film's original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single "I Will Always Love You", became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period. The album makes her the top female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four. Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996). The Preacher's Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history...

In 1989, Houston formed The Whitney Houston Foundation For Children, a non-profit organization that has raised funds for the needs of children around the world. The organization cares for homelessness, children with cancer or AIDS, and other issues of self-empowerment.

In 1990, Houston was the spokesperson for a youth leadership conference hosted in Washington, D.C. She had a private audience with President George H. W. Bush in the Oval Office to discuss the associated challenges.

With America entangled in the Persian Gulf War, Houston performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV at Tampa Stadium on January 27, 1991. Due to overwhelming response to her rendition, it was released as a commercial single and video of her performance, and reached the Top 20 on the US Hot 100, making her the only act to turn the national anthem into a pop hit of that magnitude (Jose Feliciano's version reached No. 50 in November 1968).Houston donated all her share of the proceeds to the American Red Cross Gulf Crisis Fund. As a result, the singer was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors.

Her rendition was considered the benchmark for singers and critically acclaimed. Rolling Stone commented that "her singing stirs such strong patriotism. Unforgettable", and the performance ranked No. 1 on the 25 most memorable music moments in NFL history list. VH1 listed the performance as one of the greatest moments that rocked TV. Following the attacks on 9/11, it was released again by Arista Records, all profits going towards the firefighters and victims of the attacks. This time it peaked at No. 6 in the Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Later in 1991, Houston put together her Welcome Home Heroes concert with HBO for the soldiers fighting in the Persian Gulf War and their families. The free concert took place at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia in front of 3,500 servicemen and women. HBO descrambled the concert so that it was free for everyone to watch. Houston's concert gave HBO its highest ratings ever.

I think that if USA today isn't on last rank of sympathy from others, is mainly due to its incredible fountain of talents, artists, actors, scientists. They served and world wide promoted the country valors, while politicians kept lowering. I see no difference between a accomplished artist and an accomplished scientist, both take a whole life of work and dedication.

To be honored by a flag flown at half mast?  Not even close.  None of that was done in official service to the country.
