NWN1
As others have said the NWN1+expansions set+final 1.69 patch (especially HotU) is great with a strong community providing literally hundreds of new maps/worlds (online & offline) to choose from (the community then ranks them on a scale of 1 to 10) as well as new mod content. Of the official campaigns... HotU was the best. Some of the NWN community will argue the fan created stuff make it worth the buy alone.

I must agree that I want to find these as well... I own BG2, but I don't know which sites are safe or not.
Could anyone point me in the right direction? (website-wise)

So Corribus, you never said how you found planescape torment These days I am feeling nostalgic, had I the time I would replay Baldur's gate 2 with Doom's mods.

To be honest.... I found it kind of meh.
Enjoyed BG and BG2 much more. Felt combat and character development in Planescape were quite lacking. Story was good and characters were interesting, but that's about all I felt it had going for it.
Maybe I'm just getting jaded.

YOU SHALL BURN FOR YOUR HERESY
Actually it is understandable that you would prefer BG, it is more balanced between combat and storyline and you could say more fun. But disliking it..? BG cannot match planescape's brilliant moments and depth. The dialogues, the twists, the themes you encounter throughout the game, the amazing amount of options according to your stat strengths, the fact that you can go through the game without actually engaging in combat, the brothel of intellectual lusts, the flashbacks, the Ravel encounter, the circle of Zerthimon.. Simply unparalleled.

On a on-topic note: I liked both NWN and Baldur's Gate and would recommend playing both. Also, I should probably get my hands on Planescape torment, sounds like fun.

I didn't dislike it - I just didn't love it, either. With all the talk going on I expected the Second Coming, but it was just so-so for me.

exactly. Planetscape: Torment makes BG (which is a fun game, yes) a little, puny, pathetic joke for an crpg. It's THE crpg of all time, along with Ultima VII. Sure, the combat isn't exactly great in it, but that's because the game isn't about combat. It's about the story

Not liking Planescape: Torment is worse than heresy. It's a lie against your own self.
As for Baldur's Gate vs. Neverwinter Nights... I never finished the first Baldur's Gate because of three things: 1) the unbalanced difficulty where very simple and even boring encounters are followed by insanely lethal battles where you survive on sheer luck, possibly with 1-2 dead party members; 2) Khalid; 3) Jaheira. Especially the last two. I don't give up easily so no matter how difficult it is, I eventually get over it, but these two... pain for the ears! Too much for me. Otherwise not a bad game but certainly not among the top 5 RPGs from my personal ranking.
Never played the first Neverwinter Nights but nearly finished the second one (didn't complete the last level due to I-don't-remember-what, probably PC issue). It is getting too much hate in my opinion, really. It has a lot of flaws, no doubt about it, but it also has many, many lines of witty dialogue and pretty good characters (with Sand occupying the highest spot uncontested) which is usually enough to make me play the whole game. The story's not bad either. With better pathfinding, better AI and some more general polishing, it would have been a really good game.

@Zenofex
if BG consisted of BG1 only, it would be considered garbage because the first game - let's say is straight - sucks. The second one however is decent, and the expansion also is good.

I would disagree the first game sucks. I have played it several times, using different NPCs, quests, etc, and it never bored me, except at the Very, VERY beginning, which is before you enter Nashkell and accept Ghastkill's quest of clearing the Mines of the kobolds.
I think the first game is simply different from the other. It has a main storyline, but you are perfectly fine to ignore it and wander around the maps and adventure, discovering many different quests and NPCs. The gameplay is fairly slow though, but even after many years, it is still fun to beat it once more and trying to improve yourself on every try.
I would agree that BG2 > BG1 though, mostly because of the PHENOMINAL story and character development that followed. Frankly, I think it is less diverse than the previous one (which allows you to custom build yourself a party by just using NPCS), as the lack of a good thief sort of forces you to either play as a thief yourself, or pick up Jan or, worse, Imoen every time you play.
The best thing about BG2 however were the romances. Without question, the most entertaining interactions in the game (Except the short, but absolutely hysterical outbursts of "Edwina") and which added a tremendous amount of depth to the game.
I never played NWN or PS:T, but I have definitely been interested in playing the latter one for several years... unfortunately, I cannot find it anywhere so I can buy or download it D:

The main issue with this game is extremely slow pace (takes years for a level up that pretty much changes nothing for non-casting classes); no visible progression of chars; lame, boring and retarded combat based on abusing AI's stupidity; overpowered archers for 50% of the game; Very slow walk speed which means you'll spend 90% of your time watching as your party walks EXTREMELY SLOWLY to go through a couple lines of dialogue and walk again, which simply bores the **** out of me and makes me want to throw up whenever I think of re-playing the game again. BG2 is MUCH better here because of abundance of haste spell and boots of speed (that effectively kills a LOT of issues with the movement, and the boredom that follows).

Well, to each of his own of course, but I never found BG2's story anywhere near phenomenal. heck, I wouldn't even call it good. It was mediocre at best to me. But again, no offense Lexx, I know you love BG

You can start at Multiplayer, create your own team, then move the save to SP folder. It will work Watch out however, custom party (if created well) makes this already easy game trivial.

I did like the romances, although I mostly enjoy the mod ones (Imoen, preferrably) because the depth of those is much, much better than stock romances. But I won't complain about those, it's still pretty good standard for western RPGs. jRPGs would teach you something about fantastic romances though

Most certainly so. Every single one of them
I would still need to review the BG2 NPCs though. I did it for the first game, and I feel I'll have to add the second's as well. Ah well, it'll have to wait until my Game cycle reaches BG once more <3
