The propagandization of America: The Reason Crossfire was Cancelled

Now correct me if I'm wrong, Gootch, but I do believe the first part of this is the piece is what you sent us way back in the day, shortly after we first hooked up.

http://tweetbeat.com/jon-stewart?s=g

How perfect it is that the first thing you now get when logging into "The Daily Show" is exactly that same piece.  We in this household, thanks largely to you, my friend, now make watching The Daily Show (and by association The Colbert Report) a regular part of our daily diet to supplement C-SPAN, both of which I assume you still regularly still ingest, includimg my son whom you might recall.

This piece becomes ever more prophetic, given the relentless march of the American "press" toward manifestations of increasingly propagandized partizanism.

Emma Goldman once wrote a book, the title of which I can't remember, in which she basically stated that the warping of any given media, in a society which relies on the media to become educated, leads inevitably to a complete takeover of the rights of the citizens by those who contol the media.

Gootch, when you sent me this clip I was already seeing that march toward the propagandization of the American populace.  My thinking is that your concerns (and mine) when you sent the clip have been borne out.  Anyone in the U.S. who does not recognize what is happening is placated.  I'm sure you are in the same boat when I comment that those concerns, which were one of those things that brought us together as thinking people, have been magnified manifold since that comparatively innocent time back in 2004.

The propagandization started way before 2004.

Look at the New York Times and how often it just took information from the military and parroted it back to Americans without even checking sources. Like it's unabashed support of the Iraq war, or the constant flouting of "No civilians were killed, only insurgents" when reporting battles for years.

Also, there are various stations that have been openly operating in partisan manners while hiding under a veneer of fairness for well over a decade.

It gets even worse as more of these new corporations are bought by other interests. There is no real "news" anymore by these large companies. It's all there just to keep money coming in to the owners regardless of the country and its conditions.

The mainstream media has been the propaganda machine for the left for decades. FOX came along and started giving fair and balanced news and that is why they dominate the news market.

Or rather, they upped the ante on the propaganda and continued unabashedly pushing the country to a more partisan temperment than ever before. Fox is part of the mainstream media.

By definition, all of the most commonly consumed forms of media are mainstream.

FOX is about as fair and balanced as CNN, MSNBC, and every other news outlet.  Linking to Glenn Beck really isn't going to convince anyone to the contrary.

Every media outlet has an agenda.  They'll tell you what you want to hear, get viewers, and rake in the ad revenue.

Again, FOX dominated because everyone now knows the other networks are puppets of liberalism.

TV News Ratings: Fox News Remains on Top; CNN Edges MSNBC; CBS' 'Evening News' Has Brutal Quarter
Published: March 29, 2011 @ 1:09 pm

The Nielsen ratings for the first quarter are in, and in the cut-throat world of cable news, Fox remains dominant, while CNN -- propelled by coverage of breaking news in Japan and the Middle East -- edged MSNBC in primetime among 25-to-54-year-olds.

On the network side, the "CBS Evening News" experienced its "lowest-rated first quarter among total viewers and adults 25-54 since at least 1992 -- as far back as Nielsen’s records for the program go." This will no doubt fuel even more speculation that Katie Couric is on her way out as its anchor.

>> For the 37th consecutive quarter, Fox has been the most-watched cable news channel in terms of total viewers.

>> FNC averaged more total viewers for its broadcast day and in primetime than CNN and MSNBC combined.

>> Fox swept the top 12 cable news programs in total viewers, and boasted the top eight programs in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic -- “The O’Reilly Factor” and “Hannity” were the top-two in both categories. (MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and the combination of Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" and Lawrence O'Donnell's "Last Word" placed 13th and 14th, respectively, followed by "Fox and Friends" at number 15.)

Elodin I have a crazy suggestion. Is it possible that mabye Fox might be a little bias in favor of the conservitive ideaoligy? And is it possible that Fox is bais, because consvertives who like baised news make a large market share that wanted to capture? Is that possible?

Absolutely. Rush Limbaugh had a mass following long before the Republican landslide in 1995 and played a major role in it.  I have commented in this forum in the past that this movement began when the FCC under the Reagan Administration abolished the "Fairness Doctrine."  That's what opened the doors and really started the movement toward the partizanization and propagandization of the media that was once "news."

Elodin, you are delusional as always.  There is nothing "fair and balanced" about Fox News and they are one of the worst offenders, along with MSNBC, in the opinion of most experts on the issue.

If popularity can be used to determine intelligent, unwarped broadcasting then Adolf Hitler must have been wildly fair and balanced.  In fact, popularity is about the worst gauge of reliable information there is.  This is the main problem with the brainwashing effect of Fox News: appeal to the lowest common denominator through incessant repetition of ideas that are popular among your chosen audience, which ideas favor the agenda of those pumping out the spew, and whip up rage, fear and hatred toward the "other side" in order to dehumanize and disempower them.

You seem incapable of straining out denotative, objective information and connotative, subjective information because you continue to claim Fox is "fair and balanced."  If you are actually watching the station's broadcasts and were capable of such discernment, there could not possibly be any way you could continue to make such a claim.

The only place one can find any reliable information about national and world events these days is C-Span.

P.S. Shyrannis, my reference to 2004 was a reference to when Gootch and I started discussing the issue and sharing The Daily Show and Steven Colbert observations, but I can see why you got a different impression.

I stumbled across an incredible book titled Into the Buzzsaw:  Leading Journalists Expose the Myth of the Free Press.  One line blew me away.  There was a former CBS producer who dismissed the paradigm of Right vs. Left and said, I'm paraphrasing here mind you, the media is less ideologically oriented than it is market oriented.  Now this was some nine years ago before MSNBC changed it's programming to become something of the anti-FOX where they tried to combat FOX News' pro-crazy drivel with their own pro-left-crazy drivel.  I highly recommend the book.

CNN disgusts me.  The major news corporations disgust me.  I find myself watching more and more LINK Tv just to be able to watch Mosaic:  News from the Middle East and Al-Jazeera English.

With my growing respect for Al-Jazeera, I got around to watching the documentary Control Room.  If anyone wants to know how Americans could continue to support the wars abroad, it's simple really.  What we have seen for the last ten years is nothing compared to what is shown on the news overseas.  The Pentagon learned its lesson from Vietnam and completely censored war coverage here.  Americans have been shielded from the images of the blood and guts of children, with their bodies strewn about in the streets and being picked at by dogs.

There is a fascinating exchange between Marine Lt. Josh Rushing and an Al-Jazeera reporter in the documentary and it reminded me of the interview I'd heard a few years before on NPR with Lt. Rushing and why after he quit his commission, he went to go work for Al-Jazeera English.  I was puzzled at how a belt-eating devildog could go and work for the enemy propagandists but after watching the movie, I had a better understanding of what was going on.

And my friend, it is disturbing.

U.S. news is a complete joke and only perpetuates the perception that we as Americans are jokes. When they are announcing something serious like a watered down version of deaths tolls blended with what Madonna wore, it becomes an embarrassment.

Our news has an agenda and its advertisements and ratings, we are so star struck and bleeding a self-serving attitude that we deserve all the ridicule we get.

Justin Beaver should start his own news broadcast and get it over with.

Into the Buzzsaw

(Gootch) Knowing your level of intellectual nuance I intend to order this book as soon as I sign off, and also have been contemplating writing one of my own on the topic to take more recent events such as the media slaying of Obama and other similar developments suggesting something of a powerful trend toward extreme propaganization.

Care to be one of my editors, or perhaps a co-writer?  If you put the intellect, analytical power and writing ability of the three of us (you, my other husband, and me) together we could probably bang out a real piece of work.

(VF) your point is underscored by the fact that 25% of Americans STILL believe Obama was not born in the United States.  Nobody needs to take a guess at which 25% they are.  And this is even after Bill O'Reilly himself scolded the right wingnuts for continuing to engage in this claptrap.

Let's see if I can find the link:
