crash from autosave

I have an unusual crash issue.  I searched the forums as best I could and didn't find any references.

I installed HoMM3 and Armageddon's Blade on XP.  Game worked fine for awhile, occasional crash, but no big problems.  Then something went wrong with the autosave1 file.

Whenever you go to the blue load/save screen with your saved games listed, if the game has created an autosave1, the game crashes.

You can play normally, but if you try and load or save, the game crashes.  I figured out part of it, by going into the game directory and deleting the autosave1 and then could load the old saves, including the autosave2.

I can also continue to play by creating a new game, alt+tab out, opening the game folder, deleting the autosave1, going back into Heroes, creating a save game before I finish my turn (which would then generate a new autosave1), and continuing playing.  Then when I wanted to play again, deleting the autosave1, loading the saved game (from the screen that no longer contains the autosave1).

I don't have internet access at home (I'm at work right now) and this is the only computer game the wife will play with me, so I'd really like to figure out what is going on.

Does anyone have any advice?

Please check the game version of your both H3 games.

I assume you have H3 Restoration of Erathia as basic game, and then the Add-On Armageddon's Blade.

Rightclick both of the "exe"-files (H3.exe, H3blade.exe), chose properties, version.

Here you should see 1.4.0.0 for H3 RoE, and 2.2.0.0 for H3 AB.

Please keep us informed.

1.0->1.4 Patch for H3 RoE is buggy and patches only game exe modules. Beware! I only use 1.0-1.1 Patch for RoE (which perfectly fixes all single player map errors) and then install H3 AB (original 2.0 version with safedisk protection, original CD or Clone Image needed). I prefer not using 2.1 and 2.2 patches for AB. These patches in my opinion are only fixes Faeries map error and removes safedisk protection. For multiplayer these patches adds H3 SoD compatibility for corresponding versions (2.1 is compatible with SoD 3.1 for example).

P.S. Sorry for bad english...

That is correct.  I am playing with the original HoMM3 RoE and then I installed the Armageddon's Blade expansion.  I'll check the versions tonight after work.  Regarding versions, I have whatever version is installed (not sure if the CDs came with updated versions).  I also can't do any updates, as I don't have any internet access.

Strangely, I messed with it for awhile, and it had the same problem with a single player saved game.  Same issue, couldn't get into the screen to even view saved games, but if I manually removed it from the folder, then I could get into the screen.

So, I backed up the saved games, uninstalled and re-installed the entire game.  Now, it's letting me create new autosave1 games and let me create and save a new game, and play the old saves (except for the 2 files that seemed to make it crash).  So, I'm not entirely sure I can explain any of that.  My wife played for a few hours last night and didn't mention any crashes.

So, I guess the problem is resolved for now.  But I can't explain any of it.

Thanks for the advice.
