About deleting old threads,
I agree with the criteria outlined by Hexa so far. The I'm new threads, the answered questions that are not relevant, and one question threads like where from or what colour that did not generate much interesting discussion. Threads with user profiles that consist of many questions are definitely worth keeping.

A really good indication of thread's deletability is the timespan that it lasted since first to last post and the amount of reads that it got. But a moderator should always look through the insides of the questionable thread before deleting.

Close moderation is required for many posts, ones that are to be kept. Go inside and remove the useless replies out of them through edit delete. Replies like "good idea", "that's what I thought", "got my IM?" or things that have nothing to do with the thread.

And I agree with the point about stars showing what is now rather than what was a year ago, so all that goes will reduce the post count, no exceptions. I suspect members may lose around 5% their post count or less on average, so many will not even notice.

As for Mods taking over each other,
I do not see the new mods as taking over from the old. It would be great if all mods worked at the same time. Because what one will miss the other will find, and what the two miss, the third will not. Appointing the new moderators was in no way meant to replace RMS. You do a good job RMS and if all of you keep doing what you do this will be a wonderful place.

As for the database slowing down,
The HC database is around 30MB at the moment. And the bigger it gets, the slower it gets. The solutions I see are deleting 2 months old registered members who haven't ever posted anything, on my part, and on mods part deleting the posts that can be easily done without.

As for archiving threads,
If we clean up the unneeded and leave the good, is there a need to make any archives? But! This gives me another idea.

As for that idea that it gave me,
Moderators and certain members will have access to the HC HTML script. There will be a directory of HC HTML files, each file created by a certain member. The file can only be edited by that member and admin/mod. The member will type the HTML file into a textbox, without the need to include headers and footers of HC, since the scripts that display the HC HTML files will add all that automatically. The member can then return to the textbox HTML editor anytime and edit his file again, saving it in real time to the server.

Such HTML files can contain HOMM1,2,3,4 info, news and other speculations, the stuff that you can find on a HOMM site, but of a permanent relevance, unlike the posts which can be of temporary refference. Example: HOMM4 Skill choice tactics, HOMM2 secondary skills chart.

Then myself or somebody else would link the HTML files that are ready to display into one menu, accessible from main pages of HC, effectively making HC an info site as well as a forum site. The difference is that HC Info part would be constantly updated by a group of interested members in real time. Visitors would build the site, each adding as much as he wants to the whole.

What do you think about such an idea? Would it be worth developing it further and making an ultimate site together?

"As for archiving threads,
If we clean up the unneeded and leave the good, is there a need to make any archives?"

If you feel that deleting redundant topics and posts is all that is needed for the overseeable future, then I'd say no.

However, if the feeling is that we will have to archive things because we would run out of space/resources otherwise, and there is no threads that we can delete easily, then an archive would be needed.

The Forums are a bit different in Nature.

Most things posted to the Tavern could probably be deleted or merged to fewer topics and posts.

A few things in the Altar and the Library would be hopelessly outdated, and could be deleted but most of it we probably want to keep (possibly after cleaning up the topic). For the Tavern and Altar I see more and more topics as a reality more than as possibility.

"What do you think about such an idea? Would it be worth developing it further and making an ultimate site together?"

I'm not sure about one thing. How is the HTML files generated initially?

That's probably a big chunk of the work. In fact, with my proposal it's 100% of the work. I don't see us maintaining the HTML files in a pure 'archive'. Once they're done, they won't change.

Your idea sounds more like a supporting web-site/web-pages than an archive, so it's not really what me and Batvanio were suggesting, but something entirely different. (I'm not saying the suggestion is either good or bad at this point, just different.)

A REQUEST TO THE MOD SQUAD

When you move a Thread from the Tavern (or another Forum) to the Altar:

If you feel that a Thread Qualify for a place in the "The Altar - Table of Contents" please send in this in a post to the Altar Thread.

What I need is one thing: The Thread Ids for the Topics I should look at.

You don't need to categorize it or anything, but I do need the Thread Id, if I'm going to do review the Thread for possible inclusion.

I don't plan to go through all the 40 pages for threads again, and I don't have any way of knowing exactly which Threads have been added on the Altar unless you tell me their Thread ids.

I assume that Hexa will want something similar for the Library -Table of Contents (in the case he's not doing the moving)?

I have to say that I agree 100 per cent with Hexa..

It's hard not to sound like the local mod boot licker here, but after starting work on the yearbook project I just have to say that you have no idea how much stuff on this forum is 1) repeated and 2) junk!!

I shall never post in vain again!!!

One soul won for the just cause ….. so many still to go ……

Ok people … just to let u know what we (mods) are doing.

Cat and Lith are making one big yearbook thread in which they will include all:
What’s your age?,   Where are u from?,   What’s your Favorite Color/Flower/Car etc…

Aerial will put all his drawings into one new drawing thread. And the mods will delete posts/replies in this thread at his request.

These two little projects will result in a lot of threads that can be deleted .. without losing the actual info in it.

Any comments … wishes .. idea’s let us know!@

*lol*

If you put me on it I will likely move a lot of threads to the tavern and library. j/k.

Seriously, the Tavern and the Altar can't really be compared, and thanks to Unka's cleaning up this autumn the Altar doesn't have all that many topics that can be easily removed anyway.

Most of the ones that need to be moved are very recent topics, which means that they are visible on the first few pages where most people look. This means that appearances are a bit misleading.

And besides, I've already sent Unka my list of topics that aren't included in the index for the The Altar - Table of Contents Thread.

It may, however, be intersting to discuss which threads that can be removed from the Altar, as they're likely a bit different in nature than those in the tavern.
