As Raistlin tried to figure out what is going on, he notices something.  There are fish in the water, swimming unharmed.  Other things like insects and the like have started to return now that the unnatural presence of the Death Knight has departed..and they seem perfectly unaffected as well.

It couldn't be because of undeath, after all the Ogre fared no better then the skeletons..but maybe there is some OTHER reason the water had a negative effect...

Swiftlane
Brooke looks at Kerym.."Do you not feel it?  There is.. evil here.  A vileness about the whole town..." almost as if to prove her point a big burly guy comes trouncing down the pier and bumps into her, knocking her into the water.

"Watch wer yer goin" he mutters just continuing on as if nothing happened.

Brooke is fine, she is a creature of water, and a small wave carefully deposits her back onto the pier.  "The ocean speaks that somebody has recently attacked a city under the sea..it says that three children were removed from it recently..."

Capital
The Sergent nods, visually relieved.  "As you command Lord Baron.  Just tell me what needs done, and I will see to it immediately."

Under less critical circumstances, Aleron might have been disappointed that the man was giving up his position with so little fight. But he had a rival to concentrate on already, so he just nodded.

"Very good."

Aleron had already gone over the steps he needed to take to secure his little piece of the world in his mind. He had several priorities.

First, and foremost, he needed to secure the capitol and as much of the rest of the country as could be managed. On that score, discrediting the Count's claim to the throne seemed simplest; Maudlin was already going out of his way to make himself unpopular. Rebuilding what infrastructure remained in Marik required more information. And tonight, or sometime soon in any case, he needed to look into the borders, as brigands and other unsavory sorts would be moving in soon if the bordering nation((s?)) were not.

On matters outside the realm, he needed to find a non-magical method of communicating with his companions, or at least gather them back into Marik, since apparently his spells were being interfered with and it would be...inconvenient...for him to leave the capitol and go to them at this time. And at some point after that, he was going to need to build some sort of force to retrieve the rest of the artifacts, or at least ensure that evil god wasn't summoned. It occurred to him that that might help solve some of his infrastructure problems in the long term; adventurers would probably be more efficient than building an army out of Marik's nearly annihilated population, and once he was king, he could offer titles of nobility as reward.

But first things first.

"To begin, I need lists of everything we have and anything we require in the way of supplies, any lists of survivors that have been compiled, and records of the most recent census from before the disaster."

That should give him a starting point to see what remained and what he had to work with. Aleron considered asking for records of the king's lineage, for the purpose of (dis)proving the Count's claim to the throne, but stopped himself at the last moment. That was something he would do himself. He would also need to check the borders; while it would be possible to send someone, it would likely be faster to scry.

More quietly he added, "I also would like a discrete eye kept on the Count for the time being—as a precaution, of course." A mundane watcher would hopefully draw less attention than spells, and Aleron determined that he was going to try to play down his magic (it was probably too late to pretend he didn't have any) where possible. "And I would ask you to meet with me this evening if you have the time; I would like to speak with you in private, and to know what steps have already been taken towards reconstruction." Some of it was obvious of course, but there were other things—messages sent to any surviving settlements, for example—that wouldn't be as visible.

Well as mentioned, the Sergent had done a rather impressive job.  Most of the stone buildings were intact, if a little fire damaged.  Though not much survived the fiery part of the assault..he had managed to have food, stone, and just about all the tools needed (for the number of people you have) brought in.  ((To make a long story short, you receive the list you asked for.  What supplies/number of healthy people that can help work, etc))

As for the Counts claim, you quickly learn that you probably won't be able to discredit it.  Too many people survived that know he was the second cousin to the king, some actually like him (though why is beyond you).  Seems either finding somebody with a more legitimate claim or getting rid of him are your only options.  Of course you could always go with a Military Coupe..and not worry about his claim.  Would require some alliances with nearby countries so they do not use it as an excuse to come in and take over themselves.

As for nonmagical communication, if he wanted to spare some 'runners' (think pony express type deal) that is one option, but any non magical means of communication is going to take a long time.

The Sergent agrees to meet in private that evening (and to have somebody keep an eye on the count), and when he arrives he has a complete list of what he has done (who he sent messages to, what promises for aid he has secured..etc).  One thing of serious interest is he has managed to get a promise of a large amount of aid from a small nearby (well relatively nearby) Kingdom.  They had sent out a caravan about a month and a half ago, and by your calculations should arrive in another week or two (caravans not moving the fastest).  Military aid, supplies, help for rebuilding..and even financial aid. The Sergent's brother married into the royal family..this could be very good.  Especially if you can secure the Sergent's loyalty.

Before you can talk to the Sergent further, Walker makes it back from wherever it is he goes. His..appearance causes some minor panic however, as he has brought some .. friends with him.  Twelve humanoid beings, roughly 20 feet tall.  They have slightly blueish tinted skin, and shockingly white hair.  "Easy all, I have brought some allies to help us rebuild."

You would be able to find and secure passage on a ship.  With Brooke 'assisting' travel ((helping 'guide' the winds and keep the waters calm.  Note she has access to minor innate abilities that make this possible)) it would still take near a month to arrive to the center of the ocean.  It will be a uneventful trip, so if you have anything to do or such by all means.  ((Otherwise your character is going to be out of touch/commission for awhile.))

Brooke suggests since she can allow breathing underwater, that you seek a mage instead.  She can even help you purchase a scroll to return back to this place if you want.

Seeing as Tanis is doing... something... important(?), Raistlin allowed himself to become distracted by the fish.  After a few seconds, an idea struck him. He might not be a druid, but he was a wood elf, and as such, wood elves had a minor ability to commune with nature. Hopefully he still knew how the hell one did that.

Sitting down and starting to meditate, Raistlin tried connecting with the fish in the pond, as well as any nearby non-Ivor/ Tanis life. (Lichen, moss, bats, etc)

He is unable to connect to any of the wildlife..but he connects with something.  Something powerful, something ancient.  Images of a giant tree, maybe as old as time itself.  The tree's size would put most now days forests to shame.  A soft female voice answers him.  "You have nothing to fear from my power.  You do not serve the corrupter, nor are you evil in your heart.  Have caution though, and touch me not with any object forged, tailored, or crafted in any manner..else it will unravel to its natural state."

Ivor, while napping with his back to the wall (awaiting some clever idea from Tanis or Raistlin to get themselves killed or worse) he looked at raistlin from under his brow, and silently mocked the elf while he tried to whisper to the wildlife of the pond. Ivor was alerted by a strange power and immdediatly lept up and drew his blade, out of caution to the alien presence, though it felt strangely serine, you can never be sure. (especially in deep dark cave).

Tanis had finally finished meditating.  She had been trying to figure out exactly what enchantment had been cast over the lake, but whatever it was it was ancient and tell tale traces were now non existent.

It was also unstable.  It fluctuated over the entire lake as if making some irregular sweeping pattern.  Tanis had been meditating to see if she could work out a pattern in which to cross, but to no avail.

"Only one thing left to do then", she mumbled, and it didn't make her feel particular happy either.

She located Raistlin, as he was bound to have something she could use.  Ivor was keeping guard, "as least he's alert, drunk or sober", she thought.

"Right, here is the plan.  I'm going to fly over there", she waited for a response, but Raistlin just looked perplexed, however her comment had caught Ivor's attention.  "But I need something to grab the twig with, so I am not touching the water.  And we need to be quick, I can only remain airbourne for short periods of time".

Tanis readied herself.  "Don't you dare fail, that dwarf will be beside himself with joy if you fall in", she thought to herself.

A scroll would be a decent item to acquire, though since Kerym can cast spells to breath underwater, a mage wouldn't be necessary. Though, a weapon that could be better used under water would be great. He doubts bullets would make it very far. He heads out in search of the scroll and a trident as well as another net. And though not necessary, he then goes looking for a place that would likely have a mage. Maybe even one with combat abilities.(fighter/mage)

"Tanis, wait!" Raistlin had recovered from having the... entity... touch his mind. "You won't be able to touch it, not if... well... I'll explain later. Do you think that you could carry me over there?" He pulled off his glove, no reason to ruin it now was there? "I'm not sure about the water, but I know that I can touch the branch without being killed in nasty ways." Hopefully the drow wouldn't ask how he knew that, she would probably laugh at him until her face turned blue... er... a slightly darker shade of grey. "Ivor, could you make sure no one sneaks up on us? It would be most unpleasant to get what we came for and then die shortly thereafter."

Here was to hoping this crazy plan worked, and that the voice hadn't lied to him...

In the caves..

As the group prepared to go after the branch, something strange happened.  A wind stirred..which since they are deep underground was odd enough in itself.  It howled through the caverns, and seemed to concentrate on the water. The water slowly is parted leaving a path of land leading straight to the branch.  ((The artifact would have communicated that the water was fine, but it can only speak to those who are meditating.  Of course the characters have no way of knowing this))

Back in Swiftlane.

You find what you are looking for, sort of...while most of the established mages are way too expensive..you find an apprentice mage who is willing to assist you.  All they ask in return is the pick of any magic items that might be found in the underwater city.

As for weapons that would work underwater..they do sell normal tridents..which would work fine.  They also sell weighted nets, which would be a good way to incapacitate a foe.

Brooke whispers to the mage who nods as you get on the boat. The mage turns to the Captain of the ship.  "Secure everything.  We are going to speed up this journey."

The captain gets everything ready, and the apprentice pulls out a rather large staff.  All the crew sort of gasp and grab onto the nearest object for dear life.   The captain asks.  "A staff of teleport?  An expensive item to be using."

The mage nods.  "A gift from my master, were we going anywhere but our destination, I would not use up the charges from the staff."

The mage invokes the staff..and the ship is surrounded by a blue light..things get a little rocky..but eventually things settle, and the light vanishes..you are in the middle of the water with no land in sight.

"We are here.  The exact middle of the ocean. Normally using this staff would cost thousands of gold..I hope what we find makes up for it."

Brooke nods.  "More then make up for it.  Stay very close to me..you are safe as long as I am around..but should we be parted..the guardians of this city would attempt to destroy you."  She plants a kiss on both the mage and you..which will allow you to breathe under water and survive the immense pressure.

He steps into the water, and ... nothing happens.  He is able to just walk right up to the branch, reach out and take it.  Upon touching it, he gains full access to druidic spells ((as if he was a druid equal level to what he is now)).
